We have been wanting to try Penny's for quite some time and we were finally in the area when they were open. Service was decent, fries were good. Burgers looked good but were not medium like it says on the menu. Both were very well done and the meat itself didn't have much flavor. Yes, their burgers offer an assortment of different toppings, but they should compliment the burger itself, not define it. Just offering a bunch of different toppings/sauces doesn't equal a gourmet burger. With all the other reviews, I guess I'll try them again. Maybe it was just an off day. read more

Just look at this monster. Perfectly twice fried fries, massive beef patties. Two patties, double bacon, double cheese, onion rings, jalapeños, and franks red hot. It's small, it's quaint, it's not really close to anywhere your headed...WHO CARES!!! 100 % worth the stop Our server was Jami (I think) she was wonderful.... absolutely a master at her craft...fun, joking, knows menu inside and out... great food, a theme menu, my personal favorite the "Presley" ..add some diced jalapenos to the mix....bravo kids bravo...so to recap, great food and better service ..if someone else says anything outside of this...I'd question their opinion....it's great!!! read more

My boyfriend and I really loved getting a chance to come back here for a dine in experience post COVID lockdown. We have been here several times before and have never had a bad experience for take out or dine in. The server is usually the same gal we see on the weekends and for the life of me I cannot remember her name but she is friendly, prompt, polite and always greets you with a smile. We usually switch up our order and split two burgers. We love the Umami Mushroom burger, the Blue Onion and the Ricardo, but honestly everything we have had has been great. Their onion rings are awesome and I love the fried Zuchinni as well. This is a small local restaurant. It's charming and the food and service are top notch. The hours are a little wonky but that's part of the package. Do yourself a favor and check it out sometime. read more

I have been to this place a couple of times now. They have awesome burgers. The place is what I would call cozy (small). It is fine if your group is 4 or less. Any larger and things get a bit complicated.The staff is as awesome as the burgers. I had the Blue onion Burger both times I have been there. The first time it was spot on, unfortunately on the next visit the crumbles of blue cheese were overpowering. The fries are the best. Best burgers in North Idaho! In fact, best burgers I've ever had in my life! The Ricardo is my favorite and I always add a second patty on it. Juiciest tastiest burgers! Prices are really reasonable for how delicious the food is. Parents came to visit and they said the same thing, best burgers they ever had. Beats in n out, Rogers, Paul Bunyan, smash burger, whataburger, any burger place you can think of does not come close to how delicious penny's pit is. Been hearing about this one place for some time now and finally gave it a try today. Very tasty big burgers! Quality buns , fresh meat and produce and they have some great unique varieties for burgers. I went with the "Sinatra Burger". I could not finish my meal it was so filling and delicious. And their fries are AMAZING!!! Golden and crispy on the outside and fluffy and hot in the inside . Probably my favorite fries in the whole area up here. They also have a little bar and serve local craft beers on tap. The decor is mostly Elvis/Marilyn theme and very very clean and organized restaurant. Kind of hard to see from the highway but it's in the shops next to the gas station. read more

Surprising find in Rathdrum, can recommend. James Dean is a double cheeseburger of commendable portion (allegedly 12oz of beef pre-cooking), trimmed with good quality condiments. All in all, a mighty tasty burger that appears fresh crafted with some level of care not generally found in similar establishments. Service was engaged and attentive for the space being worked by one waitress. The space is clean and contains ~10 tables albeit a bit cramped in some respects, it works. Beer on tap available. Upgraded sides are a bit spendy for what you get, that is my sole criticism, but hey they have to make a buck somehow. Two burgers, two drinks, two upgrades (o-rings and SP fries) was $34 before tip. Overall good job with a nod toward quality to justify the price. If Penny would make her own fries, rings and such vs. frozen product, this place would be excellent. Thank you Penny's! read more

So my wife found out about this place from coworkers of hers. It's tiny. So hard to find we passed right by it, the marker on Yelp isn't "on point" so to speak. So check the parking lot next to the convenience store and you're in the right spot. Onto the food, I ordered the James deen, double patty, usual "standard double burger". But the flavor, oh wow. It's one of the best hamburgers I've ever had. So juicy, fresh, and just downright delicious. My wife ordered the umami burger. She absolutely loves mushrooms, but I gotta prepare you. It's overwhelming with the "umami" flavor and it is rich. Again an amazing burger but be prepared for it to be "richer" than what you expect, I hope that reads well. She ordered the zucchini and I ordered the onion rings. Our boys got fries with their burgers. Speaking of kids, kids meal is HUGE!! And both kids gave it an outstanding thumbs up. Great prices on kids meals too. The same batter is used for the zucchini and the onion rings. I enjoyed them both, but if I had to choose one, choose the onion rings. We will be back!!!!! read more

I usually rate a place based on how I like the food, I am going to adjust that formula a bit for this review. I didn't really like the food as much as I had hoped but that was because of my personal preferences not the actual quality of the food. Penny's Pit is a small tavern/pub/bar, with a few seats at the bar and a handful of tables. The place is well decorated and clean. Service was exceptional and the food was delivered promptly, hot off the grill. I ordered a Blue Hawaii burger, a burger with cheese, pineapple, ham and BBQ sauce which came with fries. The burger was a good size and was cooked to medium. The ham was very tasty as was the pineapple and both were plentiful. The BBQ sauce went well on the burger, it was on the sweet side which played well with the salty ham. They added a good quantity of fries to the plate. By many standards this would be an exceptional burger plate. I personally am not a fan of charbroiled burgers or battered fries so I did not enjoy my meal as much as I would have otherwise, but again that is personal preference so I pushed that aside for the sake of this review. Would I return to Penny's, absolutely, it is a great little place with cold beverages, relaxing decor, and exceptional service. Would I order the food, yes, but I would opt away from the burger and fries for personal taste reasons. read more

What this place has going for it: - everything seems fresh - waitress was very pleasant What this place has going against it: - place opens at 12 noon and closes at like 3:30 4 days a week - if you get there for lunch at 12 noon expect them not to everything on the menu yet Burgers are seems fresh and are decent portions. This place is really 3.5 star establishment. They are open only for lunch 4 days a week. That's ok, but they open at noon instead of 11am. When you get there at 12 noon it's like they just rolled in at 11:50, since 2 different types of burgers were not available yet since they didn't have some of the ingredients made yet. I don't know, maybe come in early enough so that when you open your doors your customers can have anything they want on the menu. Fix your hours and be more efficient with your prep and this could be a 4 star establishment ***UPDATE*** Above is the original review which I gave them 4 stars for this establishment. Well I posted it while in the restaurant. Waitress comes up to me a asks if I just posted a review on yelp., I said yes. She stated owner was upset with the review. I told her it was very unprofessional to be doing this right now. She went in the back and the owner came out and proceeded to make scene. I left and let me wife deal with it (I don't do drama). So unfortunately I will not be going to this establishment again and can not recommend this place. First time customers. I knew the place was small, about 20 people at 1:30 on a Thursday filled the place up. But since it came so highly recommended, and it was difficult to find, we didn't mind waiting 15 minutes on a bench outside. They specialize in gourmet burgers that average 1/2# of meat for ~ $13. Heck you pay that at Red Robin (RR) and get less meat. Like RR, your burger comes with fries... maybe not "endless" but too many for me to eat after that HUGE burger and wonderfully seasoned. My wife (raised as a no non-sense meat and potatoes gal) had the simplest Marilyn burger... no frills, just pure delight. Mine was a special, not on the menu... yet. Called a Blue Bayou with blue cheese crumbles, blackened meat, bacon, red onion... a bit spicy but fantastic. The waitress was the greatest. Anticipating your needs, checking on refills,.... Decor was Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Frank Sinatra... all very cute and clean. Wishing the music was also from that era (since I'm an old fart) but the light rock wasn't terrible. Penny's Pit is this tiny little burger place next to the Conoco in Rathdum. The tables are pretty close together and were always full. The service was great and the food was good, however the seasoned fries seemed to need more salt and the burger while tender and with a delicious char broiled taste could have used more seasoning as well. It is definitely worth the time but I think that Rogers may be better. As far as good places to eat in Rathdrum this is a good stop for sure. read more

Very disappointed the last 2 times we went. We couldn't hardly eat the burgers because the bun were too soggy, just fell all apart. The cook must have changed, sad what a cook can do to a restaurant. Haven't been back again. We've thought about calling or peeking our heads in to see if the dark haired girl was cooking, but didnt think that would be very nice. Sad because it was our go to place.
