First off, this is a beautifully crafted location. Tucked away inside a rather unassuming downtown hotel, you would never imagine what's waiting for you downstairs. After crossing the lobby, we were directed to the lower level, where we had to give a secret knock to gain entry. And just like that, we were transported back in time. The atmosphere is magnificent. The intimate downstairs setting, the decor, and the overall mood give the place a personality all its own. It feels like stepping into another era, with all the charm and mystery you would expect from a speakeasy. But what makes Dockum particularly interesting is the history behind its name. In 1958, a courageous group of African American students staged a peaceful sit-in at the Dockum Drug Store lunch counter, located upstairs from where the speakeasy now sits. For nearly four weeks, these young people challenged segregation, ultimately helping bring an end to discriminatory service practices at the Dockum chain in Kansas. Think about that for a moment. Here I was, enjoying a beautifully designed speakeasy, only to discover that the building above me had been part of something far more significant than a night out. That history adds another dimension to the experience, and I appreciate that the establishment makes an effort to acknowledge it. Now, back to the drinks! Wonderfully crafted, beautifully presented, and clearly made with care. I ordered The Last Word, and what made it even more memorable was the little show they put on while preparing it right at our table. I love when a cocktail becomes part of the experience rather than simply something placed in front of you by their beautiful waitstaff. The food? Good, but not great. It certainly wasn't the highlight of the evening, but it didn't take away from what made the visit special. And that's really the thing about Dockum. You're not just going downstairs to grab a drink. You're stepping into an atmosphere filled with character, enjoying a little theater, and visiting a place connected to an important chapter of Wichita's history. If you're in downtown Wichita and looking for beautifully crafted cocktails, a little mystery, and a location with a story worth knowing, Dockum is absolutely worth visiting. As for me, I already know I'll be back. After all, now that I know the secret knock, it would be a shame not to use it again.

Off the beaten path just a bit means that it's a bit quieter than other "Old Town" bars right after work and in the early evenings. It does pick up after 10pm most evenings and occasionally has a band, but not too often. A decent selection of premium liquors like bourbon if that is your thing, 6 draft beers and plenty of bottle selection. Standards like PBR, Highlife and Coors Orig. are $2.25 everyday. No need to look for a special. Lucky's just hits all the right notes for me. All the character of a hole-in-the-wall dive bar without making you feel like you need to take a shower when you get home. 5 Stars from me!

Is that even a thing?), Field House has been a stalwart since my days as an overly ambitious coed with an ego as unending as the construction on Kellogg. With beer options as varied as Miller Light, as craft as ShockTop, and liquor options that stop just short of Fernet, the Field House isn't for city slickers with perfectly coiffed cowlicks hoping to sample artisan cocktails, and imbibe in sipping tequila. It is however, the perfect spot for those of us in our late 20s and early 30s who never forgot the power of a $5 you-call-it, and the allure of a bartender whom we grew up with, and had a crush on 15 years ago. If you're looking for an economical way to lap away your sorrows and meet a stranger that you'd met once before at the SigEp house a decade or so ago, Field House will deliver. But unlike the days of my reckless youth, I am now old enough to sip my Frio with class, and only occasionally take over the Touch Tunes juke box to put Saves the Day, Panic! At the Disco, and Alkaline Trio on blast. I am also young enough to get straight up drunk on Rumple Minze, eat a bag of cheese Doritos, and toss darts errantly at a dart board or a wall, whichever happens to appear closer at the time.
