Kirby's is the bomb! Definitely the best dive bar I have ever visited, and I honestly have been to a lot of places. Before I "dive" deeper into my review, let me just stress the words "dive bar"-- in here you will find neither glitz nor glamour; no valet parkers; but a chance to mix and mingle with some of the best citizens of Wichita that the town has to offer, which makes it a signature bar in Wichita. The place conveniently offers parking in a lot at the back, and when Kirby's gets packed, you can just hang out in the outdoor patio. I came here for their Meatfest celebration, and out of all the places I visited in Wichita, I probably enjoyed this place the most. The people were so friendly; the beers were cheap and pouring; and the live music offered at Kirby's made me wish we had more underground bands in my hometown of Miami. The only con I had to say about this place is that their bathroom only had one toilet and was a bit grungy. However, the bathroom honestly represented the classic grunginess of the bar, and I really enjoyed the random stickers all over the place. read more

Kirby's is a magical place, full of music, friends, fun, and adventure. You never know what you'll find when you walk in the door. You could discover something new on the walls that are covered in 44 years worth of show posters, band stickers, and WSU memorabilia. There is no doubt that Kirby's Beer Store has its own flavor and style that is almost impossible to find anywhere else. Sure, it's definitely a dive bar, so it's not the cleanest, you'll never be able to get a martini or wine, but it's literally one of the best dive bars in the nation. Opened in the early 70's, little pieces of history; posters, fliers, stickers, and news articles adorn the walls. Kirby's has been a major venue for many local bands, as well as touring bands from coast to coast. A decent and expanding beer selection with daily specials. But,it's the atmosphere and the people that really sold this place to me. Located across the street from Wichita State University, Kirby's diversity brings in so many styles of people and music From Jazz, to country, reggae, rock, and bluegrass there is always something for everyone. Great staff! Great outdoor patio (new). Best place in town to see live music. Go get a cheap beer, enjoy a free show (be sure to tip the performers and your bartender) and meet some interesting people. The bar has a very rich history that the new owner has a wonderful job maintaining while updating the space in just the right ways. I cannot say enough good things. read more

I absolutely love Kirby's. This historic dive hole contains within it (and on the patio) the best people, best bartenders, best drinks, best prices, best decor,best stench, best pseudo filthy restrooms, and best live music of any bar ever. It's an amazing gem of a place, and if you're lucky enough to be in Wichita, hit up Kirby's any night of the week and you shant be disappointed. *P.S. The ultimate dive bar! I learned that it is owned by the same people that own Barleycorn's and Lucky's. It is a cozy spot across the street from Wichita State university. The bartender was pretty cool and the band playing was good too. Is an extremely intimate setting so if you're looking for a place to fit a large party, this isn't the spot. If you haven't been to Kirby's and you live in Wichita, you are messin up. If you haven't been to Kirby's and you are visiting, you need to fix that! This dive bar defines "dive bar". There's never a cover so it's important you tip the bands or other entertainment that swings through. It's a tiny spot so if it's a big show get there early. No cash for a band tip? They let you put it on your tab, that's what I tend to do. read more

For a dive bar, I don't know that you can ask for something better than Kirby's. It's got the culture and the history of a bar like the one from Cheers (though it's smaller and more dimly lit). They ave frozen pizzas from a semi-local company that they cook up that are actually quite good. And they have live music often, and it's always free. Pretty sweet deal. read more

I've been to Kirby's on a Monday night for a kickass jazz band no one's ever heard of, and on a Saturday night for the rowdiest bluegrass band in the tri-state area. This is the THE dive bar in Wichita. Always a great show & tons of local artistic types frequent this place. Be warned, it's definitely a hole in the wall kind of place, so don't expect ritzy or roomy. There are music flyers plastered from over the past 30+ years! I think it just adds to the charm of this place. I highly recommend going in to catch a show, there's always great local & touring bands. Dead Kennedy's Songs, Lou Reed, a local band and the legendary Split Lip Rayfield on my dollar, the best dollar I ever spent.
