Had a wonderful time at my first Wichita speakeasy!…read more I'm in town visiting family, and they decided to introduce me to Dockum. And what an introduction it was. First off, this is a beautifully crafted location. Tucked away inside a rather unassuming downtown hotel, you would never imagine what's waiting for you downstairs. After crossing the lobby, we were directed to the lower level, where we had to give a secret knock to gain entry. And just like that, we were transported back in time. The atmosphere is magnificent. The intimate downstairs setting, the decor, and the overall mood give the place a personality all its own. It feels like stepping into another era, with all the charm and mystery you would expect from a speakeasy. But what makes Dockum particularly interesting is the history behind its name. In 1958, a courageous group of African American students staged a peaceful sit-in at the Dockum Drug Store lunch counter, located upstairs from where the speakeasy now sits. For nearly four weeks, these young people challenged segregation, ultimately helping bring an end to discriminatory service practices at the Dockum chain in Kansas. Think about that for a moment. Here I was, enjoying a beautifully designed speakeasy, only to discover that the building above me had been part of something far more significant than a night out. That history adds another dimension to the experience, and I appreciate that the establishment makes an effort to acknowledge it. Now, back to the drinks! Wonderfully crafted, beautifully presented, and clearly made with care. I ordered The Last Word, and what made it even more memorable was the little show they put on while preparing it right at our table. I love when a cocktail becomes part of the experience rather than simply something placed in front of you by their beautiful waitstaff. The food? Good, but not great. It certainly wasn't the highlight of the evening, but it didn't take away from what made the visit special. And that's really the thing about Dockum. You're not just going downstairs to grab a drink. You're stepping into an atmosphere filled with character, enjoying a little theater, and visiting a place connected to an important chapter of Wichita's history. If you're in downtown Wichita and looking for beautifully crafted cocktails, a little mystery, and a location with a story worth knowing, Dockum is absolutely worth visiting. As for me, I already know I'll be back. After all, now that I know the secret knock, it would be a shame not to use it again.

We were on a schedule and had training to attend. Again the waitresses were excellent and were doing all they could to keep us up beat. I will give it another try next time in Wichita in the area

We try to check out a new place during each trip and wound up back at river city brewery. However! There was great live music coming from across the parking lot. Taking a closer look, we thought... cigar bar? Let's check it out. And I am glad we did! Mort's has such a great atmosphere! The girls working here are so cute, friendly and helpful! My partner is a cigar smoker but it was my first time. We opted for the Havana Honey, which was a smaller cigar. Our server got us all set up and that choice was pretty good! I now see the hype. They have a large drink menu but I stuck with a Michelob Ultra. We came back the next day and Sundays was $1 off drafts so we did the same thing again. The live music was great. Mort's has live music EVERY DAY! I love bars with live music and the fact that they have it every day is a reason we went back the next day. I can't wait for our next trip back to Wichita because we will definitely be heading to Mort's again!
