Always our first stop in P-town because it's so close to the parking area. It's so nice inside -- you get the baskets and you can go around picking out "penny candy." It's around 10.95/lb. They also have little bags of gummy candy for $2.95 and more chocolatey things for $8 - 12. I think the prices at this spot are the best in all of the Cape. I haven't been to a more affordable candy shop. It's also never crowded, so you can check out quickly. read more

I love this place. I have come here probably 4 summers in a row. I give the kiddo $20 and a little basket and let him pick out whatever he wants up to $20. He loves it and I get to make him practice math. That aside, I am more of a savory person myself but I do like an occasional indulgence so I love wandering around seeing what candies are here, what I've never heard of, and then picking out some taffy and fudge and whatever tickles my tipsy fancy to try with the kiddo. The owners have recognized us from our annual trip now a few years in a row and tend to have great banter, so that is yet another highlight for me. read more

I love this candy store I've been going there since I was a kid. It's still as exciting with lots of nostalgia candy from my childhood. The fudge is excellent, and I love the fact that you can buy Zotz in strips of four like I used to buy when I was a kid! So many things to choose from! There are two candy stores directly across from each other in Provincetown, and this one was the less crowded one, and it seemed to feel a bit more old fashioned, with more variety. I checked out both of them, but this is where I wound up making some purchases. I bought some "Cranberry Bog Frogs," which were amazing. My only regret is that there were only three in the box (also, I had to "share" them, which somehow means I got one and my fiancee gobbled down the other two. WAH!). They have an old fashioned Slushee machine behind the counter. I don't think I've had one since like 4th grade, and it was a fun blast of nostalgia to order one. Drinking it, not so much (but not dinging Penney Patch for that!) They're utterly disgusting, and I am so judging ten year old me on ever loving them. I imagine if you've got kids who need a cold drink, they're a good choice though! :) They've also got boxed water behind the counter, which was a blessing on a hot day. There are a lot of old fashioned candies you can find, too. Some of them were ones I remembered fondly, but having shattered my fond memories of Slushees, I decided to just remember them that way! The only place I had any actual gripes was, sadly, with the fudge. I thought it was incredibly sugary and lacking in chocolate flavour. I got the rocky road, and I couldn't tell if I was eating fudge or had just somehow gotten marshmallows. It also seems a little grainy. read more

One of the stores that we explored in P-Town is this one! I'm not a sweet eater but Hubby loves sweets, so he dragged me info this store to complete his mission. They got a lot of sweets. We got to try a few flavors. I like the salted caramel! Who doesn't? So we got that to go, along with other flavors that Hubby likes. It took us almost 2 weeks to finish it, but Hubby ate the most of it. While at the store, I had a chance to watch the making of fudge! Wow! Never seen it before. It was a cool process. The store has a lot of candies too but we weren't so much into candies. They make great chocolates although not a lot of dark chocolate selection. Perfect store to go after the meal! read more

We recently brought some friends to Provincetown for the day on the boat. Ate some lunch, had a few drinks and as we were heading out We had to grab some goodies to bring back and stopped into the Penny Patch. Super small little store and it was a hot day but it's a fantastic candy shop, it has everything and anything you want. Nothing is a penny but that's understandable given the times. I'm sure they get overwhelmed with comments about the "Penny candy thing". We grabbed a basket and went a little crazy! Definitely had some laughs as we filled it up! Also got a pound of fudge which was delicious! Chocolate and chocolate walnut was the best. I think if we had kids with us it would be a definite stop with them. I love this candy shop, not only because of the external and internal aesthetics but also because of the variety of sweets and the kindness of the employees. I once got into an in-depth conversation about why marzipan is a great choice and was even told today that if I could sing the entirety of "We Didn't Start The Fire" - Billy Joel, that is a free piece of fudge would be given out. I was excited to receive a gift box of PennyPatch fudge flavors from friends who visited the Cape, but disappointed with the fudge. The taste of every flavor was a bit too mild and the sugar overpowered flavor by my judgement. I forgave that on the presumption that PP may want a mild fudge. However, the most disappointing characteristic was grainy texture. Fudge, small batch or not, is a tricky confection because the cook has to be very careful about temperature. It MUST reach a temp of 238F to avoid that grainy texture, cool down to 110 and then be vigorously beaten to a creamy smoothness. For whatever reason the batch I got was crystal on the teeth and tongue. To be fair to PP, this is my first box of their fudge and other reviewers did not note my experience. There's probably not a cook on the planet who hasn't produced grainy fudge at one time or another including myself. As an aside for anyone who gets a single flavor box with this texture there is a simple solution. Put the fudge in a pan, reheat it to 238 F, cool it about a half an hour to 110, beat it with a wooden spoon until it is smooth, chill it, cut it up and put in an airtight container. BTW you can add anything else you might like at the best until smooth stages. Ie, I like a bit of orange flavor in my fudge or some ground nuts Or peppermint for the holidays. read more

Mmmmmm. Candy. Always a destination spot for us in P-town whenever we are here. Grab a basket and make your way around the store while you fill it with retro and familiar candies. It's a happy place. Try the fudge. If you like it, buy some. Currently, the gentleman behind the counter is much more jovial and friendly than our previous experiences in recent years. Why go here instead of the bigger, brighter and more tourist-ridden taffy place right across the street? Thank you for asking! It's all about the service. I never did the research, but I'm guessing the gent who works the counter here is the owner. One of the nicest guys in Le Town de P - great customer service. Just friendly, funny, and fast. I also appreciate his "Making Fudge Today" signage that he occasionally puts out in the front window. There's something about these small gestures that help keep the small beach town vibe intact. And though, they may not have as much as the place across the street, you feel that what they do have was picked with a lot of heart (and a good sweet tooth). In my adult life of past times, I came here with my former love as I always have a sweet tooth. Sadly with inflation through the years Penny Patch does not live up to its name as it no longer cost a penny but approx. $20.00 to $30.00 for one pound of salt water taffy... well prehaps in the early 1900's era yes but not in the 2000's and beyond, thus four stars. I personally love chocolate sea salt and maples fudge! You can taste the freshness and authenticity of the ingredients. This is a quick review. Small space. Ok staff not that friendly. Prices arent bad i guess i dont really know what fudge should cost. I ordered a dark chocolate cashew cluster. It was good, i prefer my turtles with walnuts but eh its ok. There was limited caramel however tons of cashews and thickly dipped in dark chocolate. It actually lasted 2 days because it was too big too sweet to eat all in one sitting. So..it was good but not going to call it the best based off other fudge candy shops ive tried. read more

First of all, it's Penney Patch, not Penny Patch, so there's no promise of being able to get candy for a penny. My children and I stop in at the Penney Patch whenever we're in Provincetown. The kids love the wide selection of salt water taffy, but it's the fudge that draws me in and the service that keeps me a loyal customer. More likely than not, you'll be waited on by the owner. Smiles, humor, and small talk make it a welcoming experience. Questions are answered, explanations given patiently, and samples provided. When I was a kid there was a Penny Patch in Wellfleet, and we would get a quarter each and fill a bag. It burned down and that was one of the saddest days of my young life. Just telling that story makes me feel like an old lady (I used to walk fifty miles across hot coals to get a glass of sand from the well!) but I have to agree with Marc. I came in looking for some good fudge and I was impressed. They had various types of fudge including cookies n cream, s'mores, rocky road, with coconut, with almonds, plain, and many others. My husband was lured by the coupon in the Cape Cod Guidebook, so we bought 1 pound of fudge and got a 1/4 free. No matter, it was really good! Tasted very very sweet, like my mom's homemade. My favs were the maple and the cookies and cream. The owner was super friendly and helpful. NOT allergy friendly btw. Had a woman ask about dairy free options and he said no. Let me first start out by saying that I dislike the majority of chocolate products, and thus, fudge. However, my girlfriend loves fudge, which means, love or hate, I'm forced to endure it regardless, and have visited this shop several times. We've been to Provincetown a number of times now, each for a relaxing spur of the moment weekend stay. Walking down Commercial street, there are a good 3 or 4 different shops making and selling fudge. We've ventured into all of them, and sampled from most, yet keep coming back here. As another reviewer noted, definitely one of the more authentic and less touristy places in town. One of the things I like about this place most is the owner. He, like many in town, is one of the friendlier people you'll meet in Massachusetts. Always in a good mood, and always up for a bit of chat. You can watch him make the fudge right in front of you, and of course ask any questions on how he does it. Prices are the best in town (~$11/lbs) and he has a great selection of other candy and sweets. He always seems to have quite a few staple fudge flavors (chocolate, raspberry chocolate, nuts, etc) plus a few that look more like "specials" or inventions. Personally, I prefer the taffy from across the street a bit more (Cabots), but that's neither here nor there. Great location and usually not too crowded, if you're on the hunt for a bit of fudge, I'd stop here. read more

Absolute favorite candy store. I've been going since I was little and I love how welcoming and family-friendly the staff are. Great prices and great selection. Get a basket and fill it up. I can give each one of my kids a few bucks and they can spend ten minutes picking out different candies. It isn't a penny a piece, but maybe a nickel or so. Still the kids like it, and it isn't really expensive. The fudge is good, and made right there in a big copper kettle. They also have throw back candy and gum, like teaberry gum and squirrel nut chews. read more
