Penner's saved our trip, plain and simple. We were driving on I-80 on a long trip and our borrowed Tundra started making strange noises coming from the front suspension. The truck owner had told us it had a broken strut but he wasn't going to replace it until after our trip. So we were worried something "bad" might have happened, driving on a busted strut. So we pulled off I-80 and spent the night in York and went to visit Penner's first thing on a Monday morning (at the recommendation of the motel front desk clerk). I understand that first thing Monday is a pretty tough time to try to squeeze into a car repair place without an appointment. All the pent-up demand from over the weekend and all. But Derek, the Service Manager understood our being-travelers-away-from-home situation and that a quick check of the suspension up on the rack could be squeezed into their schedule. The truck was driven around the block (by Derek with me inside at his request) before being put on the lift. Then up on the lift it went, and bone-dry ball joints were identified as the sound-making culprits. Some grease thru the never-used Zirk fittings on all four ball joints made most of the noise go away. The tech did confirm the strut was busted and needed to be replaced, but it could wait until we got home. So they didn't try to squeeze in a repair when one wasn't needed. Nice. Penner's couldn't have been nicer to us. They didn't take advantage of our dire situation and in fact they bent over backwards to get us band-aided up and on our way. And the price was very reasonable. Penner's made me wish I lived in York, Nebraska. Except that I'd have to become a Cornhusker fan and I don't think I'd be able to make that switch. A week ago our minivan broke down eastbound on I-80. Our alternator failed as we were returning home and we were at the mercy of the citizens of York. I handle a fleet of trucks and trailers, one trailer had a blowout and I called them to replace it. ETA was pretty standard, service average, tire selection poor. When it came time to pay is when the issue arose. They called and they were out of EFS checks so I had to see if the driver could get one from the truck stop, truck stop was out as well so I had to pay with credit card - no big deal. This was all afterhours so I was trying to sit my kids down for supper as well as handle this tire and another breakdown. I was called with a total at 5:50pm, told the lady I needed to check with the driver on the EFS check and if he couldn't get one I'd pay with card. At 6:14pm I was on the phone paying with my card, got a text message while doing that saying they were going to be calling the police if I didn't pay immediately. My driver started texting as well saying they're calling the police. I was on the phone so I didn't see these until after I hung up. Horrible customer service. read more
