On Saturday past, I decided to take a day trip and get out of the house for the day. I took the 8.25am train from my hometown, Castlerock. Around 2 hours later I arrived in sunny Bangor. I have not been in Bangor for at least 20 years, maybe more. A lot has changed since then! I left the train station and wandered down the Main Street, taking in the shops. At this stage I was very hungry and decided that breakfast was needed. Just off Main Street, I happened upon The Penguin Cafe, situated just next to The Winning Post public house and Smith's Bookmakers. "I've struck gold here", I chuckled to myself.
I took a seat in The Penguin and was immediately greeted by a member of staff who I soon found out to be Margaret, the cafe owner. Impressed by my epic journey, she gave me a cup of tea on the house. Someone in a review above mentioned about the tea being incredible in The Penguin and I have to agree. The taste was out of this world but Margaret would not tell me her secret! I decided on an Ulster Fry and it didn't seem long before it was presented to me.
I looked down and was completely taken aback by the amount of food on the plate. 2 rounds of toast, 2 soda, 2 potato bread, sausages, bacon, eggs, mushrooms, tomato, beans. The soda bread was to die for, the bacon was devine and the eggs are probably the best I have ever had. Cooked to perfection, the tasty yolk trickled over the rest of my fry resulting in a taste sensation. My tastebuds have never had it so good!
Before I left I was introduced to the dishwasher, Herbie, who gave me a good tip for the horses. I placed this in the bookmakers next door and it won easily and paid for my trip! I sampled a pint in The Winning Post pub before moving on from King Street with fond memories.
The Penguin is a wonderful dining experience and I recommend it to all. I look forward to my next trip! read more
