I purchased a summer home in the Keene area six years ago. I was impressed by Penelope's inventory, which included some nice quality furniture along with accessories and knickknacks. I furnished my little house with many finds from this shop. But times have changed. Nowadays, the shop is dirty and disorganized. Their filthy upholstered furniture is unsanitary and not fit to be sold. Wooden furniture is pitiful and cheaply made. Not worth refinishing. Maybe you'll find a plate or picture that you could settle for, but there are several other places in the area where you can actually enjoy hunting for bargains. The owners need to clean their store and discard the junk. Until then, I won't be back. read more

Nice shop. Eclectic furnishings from vintage near colonial furniture and fixtures to 1930s on up. If you're looking to find a new-to-you piece Penelope's is a good place, for sure. Always find something interesting there and the owner and staff are helpful and responsive. The inventory changes weekly, and you can ask if they tend to get certain things. read more

It's a consignment shop, so stock varies day to day. Often we will pop in and there absolutely nothing of interest to us, but occasionally we hit a great deal. We picked up a solid oak changing table for about a hundred bucks, no particle wood. Our best find was a solid ash bunk bed set made in Vermont. We dithered because it was $330, and we're not rolling in cash, but finally we took it. After we got home, we googled the company out of curiosity and found out it retailed new for over $3000! It's a very, very nice piece of furniture that will be able to withstand generations of monkey kids climbing all over it. I wish we could find bookshelves, but the proprietor said that it's rare to get them in, most people keep them, and they sell very quickly. We've also been looking for a good, large dresser for some time, but what they get is either junky or overly expensive for what you get. I believe that the consignee sets their own price, but sometimes it's really crazy what they want. It's not Antiques Roadshow, people. read more

The first reviewer here two years ago got it right. Nothing has improved since. Penelope's advertises "fine furniture" but items are in poor repair and there has been little or no attempt to spruce anything up. It's a disheartening place to shop for used furniture because ... well, because most of what's here is crap. Overpriced crap. You'd be better off at a flea market -- or even better, much better, try Find It in Keene or Adam's Consignment furniture near Swanzey. There you'll discover quality furniture at great prices. read more

Great variety of furniture and home goods. The items are reasonably priced. It gets a bit busy in there on the weekends, so you have to be patient if you need help. The delivery was quick and not too expensive. I have shopped there several times over the years, never disappointed. read more

My husband and I, when shopping for a new piece of furniture, always stop in here first. We have found some incredibly nice pieces for very reasonable prices. The latest were 2 Knob Creek 7ft tall China cabinets made of solid wood and thick glass, retailing for $3600! We were thrilled to walk out with them for $400. We stopped in while enjoying a short visit in town and am very glad we did. This shop had outstanding buys and a wide variety of stock as well. I'm extremely happy with the High end pro line coffee grinder that I picked up. Its a Burr grinder that grinds perfectly for my espresso machine which is very difficult to find. Fun place to shop for a sofa, desk, floor lamp, etc. and find hidden gems you did not even know you needed! Furniture is in good repair, very reasonably priced, and owner is super nice and helpful. Selling furniture here appears to be a bit complicated, but I will stick to the buying for sure. read more

I love this place. I have gone a few times now. The people are always friendly and willing to give a hand or some advise. I loved that they had a measuring tape on handy as I had forgotten mine at home and the man was happy to help me bring my things to my car and help me load it all up. I have bought a few tables, clocks and a cute Christmas dish from them. All were great quality and super clean. I am not sure where they get their furniture from but they all look fairly new. I have only purchased one item that you could tell had been used before. However i think it gave it some character as it was still very clean, sturdy and not too warn down. The prices of most the items are very good. Of course price varies depending on the item and use/condition. Some bigger pieces that come in sets can be a bit pricey however I think it is the fact they are sets and the great conditions that make it worth it. I will continue to come here in the future for any new things I may need or project I may want to try. read more

Every time we have been looking for a specific item we wind up finding it at Penelope's! We were looking for a piece of furniture with specific dimension restrictions...we found a solid MAPLE hutch for 33 dollars!!! WOW! It matches all our cabinetry perfectly.
