This garden center is much more than a place to buy plants... it's a mini nature retreat! They have pretty plants, amazing trees and some unique finds too. Plenty of gift ideas here. I especially enjoyed feeding the goats and seeing the large turtles and emus up close. They also have wild birds and cool sculptures/statues. The koi pond was nice, though the fish food was empty during our visit. There's also a little trail with a pond, bamboo and much more. While I wished they had a map, not having one made each turn feel like a fun surprise. A great spot for kids to wander around and explore. read more

I love this place! I'm grateful that I live a 5 minute drive down the road from this fantastic garden center which is really more like an area attraction. Come for the plants, stay for the dinosaurs, and the birds, and the petting zoo, and the photo ops! Bring the kiddos! Buy a plant! I've got a yard full of palms and other tropicals from Pender Pines, and they do so well. Even though plants come with an amazing warranty, I've never had to return anything, ever! It's a great place to take a walk, and buy mermaid yard art! This place is marvelous! And the prices are great! It's a must-see spot, so grab lunch and picnic at Pender Pines. read more

A very nice garden center that you can even bring the kids to for some fun. A great thing to do on the weekend! They have turtles, rescue birds, goats, and alpacas. There is a nice little pond with fish you can admire by the beautifully landscaped surrounding. I am in love with this place!! Lots of plants, succulents, trees, herbs, pottery, and so much more. There's a pond where you can sit on short pier and feed koi fish for 25 cents! When your looking around at plants you'll see hidden gems in the scenery like dinosaurs and metal animals.. knees.. very cute! There's also an array of animals like turtles in a small pond , goats in fenced off pasture, llamas, there's lots to see then there's the plants! Hanging plants big and small.. prices from like 4.00 and up depending on how big and what it is! The staff was very nice and friendly.. asked if I needed help finding things.. the place is huge so spend some time and enjoy it.. there is places on grounds to sit and take it all in.. Absolutely terrible experience. i provided measurements, and photos, to Pender Pines to size match a palm tree. Instead of size matching as they confirmed, via email and at time of installation, they planted a baby palm tree just 12" tall. The install guy even texted me to confirm they were the same size, just willfully lying knowing they were t close. Pender pines even acknowledged it was their mistake and said they weren't sure how it happened. When I reached out to them about their error, they said it would cost me another $1000 to have them come back out and fix their mistake. I talked with their "customer service" who couldn't care less about the error and simply said I can pay them another $1k to fix the error or keep the wrong tree with no refund. Absolutely avoid Pender Pines at all costs - trash customer service, company, and only interested in more $ to fix their own mistake. read more

Pender Pines is right down the road from us and it has so many positive qualities. When we first moved here I had a plant in our front yard that I wanted to get another of and I took a picture and showed a girl working there and she was able to tell me it's name and where to find another one on their property. Additionally they have a little gift shop that has a bunch of cute things for gardeners ( melissa and Doug kids gardening tools too). They also have a great selection of vegetable plants and annuals. However, for us, the best part are the animals. My daughter and I go when we have left over veggies to feed the goats (they have a sign showing what you can bring to feed them). Then we make our way to the koi pond where they have a 25 cent machine to feed them before heading to see the birds in the indoor plant section. The birds are very cool. read more

Looking around a lot of the plants and trees looked under watered and very sad. Did not come away with any plantings for her garden. My friends are frequent visitors of Pender Pines and they brought me out for my first time. I loved it! It was much bigger then I thought it was, especially being right off the main busy road. It was much more then just a garden center and that's what's made me love it more. There was a humongous coy pond that you can walk out and feed them (cost 25¢ for food). There are tons of different colors and sizes of fish, it was so cool to see. They had SO many plants, flowers, trees and more!!! If you keep walking towards the very back of the garden you'll find something even more special/surprising, goats! Llamas and a donkey! You can also feed them (25¢) . Then inside the greenhouse there are parrots and other birds all over, they're very beautiful. I can't wait to come back. read more

Super neat place that we discovered while on vacation one year. My kids really enjoyed the koi fish and getting to feed them. Plants were beautiful and they have absolutely everything. This place was so promising, beautifully setup, large layout... Lots to offer. Close to my house. Unfortunately, just like many other reviews, customer service is atrocious. Warranties are a joke. Beyond the pale of horrible. Story: Went there about 3 weeks ago and spent quite a lot on many items... Trees, plants, soil... We were on the opposite side of the property. Had a rep, which we believe was one of the owners (family owned) pulling an empty trailer, pass us. We swiftly asked him about some Pink Muhly Grass (1 gallon pot at $10/each). He made us feel that we were inconveniencing him for asking and didn't offer to help us carry the 10+ we picked. We had asked him if they would prosper, he said they were just about to bloom, that this is their blooming time. Then, drove off as we began to ask another question. We managed to get all the plants and supplies to the front desk and purchased. Took home, watered daily. A week later, one of the Muhly grass plants looked sick. The other plants looked fine. We took the plant back to the store, and asked to swap it out. The lady at the check out, which we suspect is the other owner, and the same person others have mentioned in other reviews, said, in a irritated manner, Pink Muhly is in its dormant season. Hmm....... and begrudgingly offered a 20% restocking fee as opposed to just swapping it out. The plant was clearly sick. Well, long story short, they lost us, and we are about to start many landscape projects. They easily could have just swapped out the 1 week old plant. It is unfortunate to discover others having the exact same experience as us, but not at all surprising. read more

We visited Pender Pines Nursery yesterday and saw a nice dragon in their arboretum. We asked if it was for sale and how much. We were told if was for sale for $1800. We went back today to buy it. Everything was going well. We paid for it, and a few other things, but as we were leaving a young man started ranting about not selling it. He claimed the person who sold it to us didn't have the right to, that he had an emotional attachment to the dragon and should take it home to protect it. He criticized the previous owner (who I think is his dad) and ranted that he couldn't trust anyone who worked for him. The situation was very unexpected and he was so emotional and ranting so much it was uncomfortable for everyone. We had to go back into the store and get a refund for everything because I'm not going to ever buy anything from this childish person again. I've never experienced anything like this and it was extremely upsetting. read more

I now accept that I'm officially an old lady by saying that Pender Pines is my favorite place to visit in the area! I drive by it every day on my way to college and either stop every day or watch longingly as it passes by. This place is pure magic. Every section of this store is grouped together by the type of plant and where it best flourishes. I would pay just to walk around this place. They have fish, emus, a donkey, birds, alpacas and goats. It's amazing and underrated! I cant understand how this place has ever had bad reviews. The staff is friendly and so helpful to a gal that doesn't know much about plants like me. The only complaint I have is that I usually leave sweaty. But I really couldn't even be mad about that because I was primarily in a greenhouse and....duh. Come here for plants, any kind. You will leave happy and wanting to come back. OMG I love this place! My friend took me here when I visited her in Hampstead, NC. They have an good selection of plants, indoor and outdoor, at excellent prices. I love that they keep animals on their property as rescues. My son enjoyed watching the birds in their cage and the goats play in their yard. They have a nice gift area with fun miniatures for fairy gardens. Their assortment of pots and garden decor is wonderful. My favorite area was the greenhouse. The main thing that I thought was missing were ID tags for the plants. This, however, didn't detract me from wanting to buy several things there. The plants overall look healthy and beautifully arranged. I wound up buying an anthurium and a Fatsia Japonica. If I had a bigger budget and car, I probably would have bought more! FYI - I never thought I would write anything negative about Pender Pines. NEVER. I have been a satisfied customer for well over 20 years. About 50-60 days ago I bought a Dwarf Japanese Maple from PP. I talked to a knowledgeable employee and told them I was putting the tree in a giant pot. They told me the tree I selected should work well. I paid for my tree ($100+) and was given a 6 month written warranty. The tree is not doing well at all. I have tried everything and nothing is helping. I know Japanese Maples are extremely finicky. Still, I do consider myself a gardner and am pretty experienced growing most anything. I just called PP and told them I would like to bring my tree back as it was failing and I was within their warranty period. I was willing to trade it for something not as finicky. I was told by a very unapologetic person on the phone that because I placed the tree in a pot the warranty was void. After all of the years I have been patronizing this business I did not know this was their policy nor was I ever told. I don't know if I will ever return to Pender Pines. It may be petty, but I feel like I have been deceived. I am so very disappointed. read more

Do not have your landscaping installed by Jonathan Schwartz or Tony Penny. They will not replace dead landscape within their one year warranty. We were promised by Tony Penny that are tree and shrubs would be replaced and now they won't. All I hear from Penny is be patient. We purchased over $10000 in landscaping and have been told to be patient for the last eight months. So, what good did it do ? They reneged on their warranty and word. I would rather travel miles out of the way instead of going to Pender Pines which is only three miles away. I have sent a review through Facebook as well as filed a complaint with BBB. Do yourself a favor and hot air and purchase from Lowe's, Home Depot, or anyone else. read more

Over the years, we have purchased several trees, some of which we had them plant, some my husband and I planted ourselves. We haven't lost a single tree! We have also purchased TONS of shrubs, perennials, houseplants, and pottery/statuary/home decor items here. My favorite Christmas gift from my husband is gift certificates from Pender Pines! The owners and staff are so friendly and knowledgeable. The plant selection and quality are superb. My hubby and I always love to see the huge koi pond in front, the smaller one in the back with a bench in a lovely shaded area. We enjoy the birds in the arboretum as well as the emus, llamas, and goats. We go to Pender Pines as often as we can! Thanks to Jon, Gary, and all the wonderful staff for everything they do every single day to make this my favorite place to be away from home! I am in the midst of redoing our landscaping and I am new to the area. I wanted to find a place to help me choose the right flowers and plants for the weather and soil here. Got up early and was excited to check this place out. I walked in and about 5-6 people were standing in the front at the cashier. No one even acknowledged me or attempted to greet me. One turned around and looked at me and turned back around. So, I wondered around for a bit and ran into others who straight up ignored me. Very disappointed. I love supporting private and local businesses but when you aren't willing to make it a great experience for your customers, why would I spend money and give you my business? I have worked in customer service my entire life and you have to treat people the way you would like to be treated. Beyond that, large selection. I couldn't quite figure out the organization around the area. There is a section that has a ton of live birds and saw a few cats wondering around. Wish I could leave a better review but, a bad experience is a bad experience. You should really be welcoming and helpful to assist people when they come to your place of business. read more

Don't buy from them! I purchased several hundred dollars worth of bushes from this garden center. We opted to buy from them because they were a local business, even paying more than the prices of the home centers to do so. We were told at the time by two sales people that the plants were covered by a one year warranty. After about six months one of the very expensive bushes started to die. All the other bushes flourished so we know it wasn't anything we did. We returned the plan to Pender Pines with receipt in hand, they told us the one year warranty only applied if they planted the bushes, not us. So basically, we paid more than we would have at one of the big box stores, got less of a warranty, and was treated callously. My advice, buy your plants from someone else, you'll pay less and get a better guarantee with less hassle. read more

Drove 40 minutes for the "fall festival" which was very disappointing. We apparently entered the wrong way and was told in a very rude tone that the exit was the other direction. People continued to drive the same way and were not spoken to. But we were hoping our experience would turn to good so we parked and went to a tarp that had about 30 pumpkins on it. When we were ready to check out they wouldn't help us because they were helping someone who's wife was still picking out pumpkins from the tarp. After about 5 minutes they were then ready to help us. Still being rude and continuing their conversation while they cashed us out. We should have driven to the Baptist Church that was also having a festival and I'm sure it would have been much better and the people probably would have been more welcoming. read more

He took time to point out specific varieties that would suit my landscape and provided historical information on the regions soil. I'm fairly educated in regards to horticulture and can speak the language but Tony helped put the pieces together and gave me additional confidence to tackle my landscaping project.
