Recovering a lost art. When I receive an email, it is a bland communication of information. That's all! When I receive a handwritten letter or note, it is rare and conveys importance. It is rare because common people choose not to go to the trouble. Only exceptional people choose writing. A beautiful pen, especially a fountain pen, will add joy and dimension to your writing. The Pen Place is superb! I have been going here since 1998 and have never walked out unhappy. I am glad they are in our area! read more

I placed an online order from Pen place and had to call back to make a change to it. Adam was super helpful and gave me advice on another ink I could choose. He also helped me find the right refill for my vintage st DuPont roller ball pen. Service was 10/10 very happy. Thanks again read more

I have been shopping at the Pen Place for well over a decade. I strongly consider it to be the primary, go-to pen store in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The staff are very friendly, uber knowledgeable and pen-centric. Their inventory turns over pretty quickly, so you never know what will be new at the next visit. They carry a poretty broad inventory, from high-end Montblancs to resaonable-priced EDCs. I highly recommend this sotre to anyone who is interested in pens. read more

I just ordered and received my umpteenth pen from The Pen Place. I am always amazed at their prices, selection and I only wish my pizzas were delivered as fast as my pens. What I really like is that there is always a handwritten note on the invoice regarding the pen I bought and a thank you. Thank you The Pen Place for great service. read more

I adore this place, but to be honest, I've not stepped foot here in 10 years, and for a very good reason: the pen I bought ten years ago (or more probably) finally broke--my fault--but not before I didn't change the cartridge one single time. Cost per use? Much higher than those crappy plastic pens I used for years that I hated. In its place, a shiny new replacement and one for my wife who has quickly become enamored with her choice. I swear the same guy that waited on me last time was there again and ably assisted me in picking out a new pen. So many cool little toys here. Sure, it's a luxury, but for a guy driving a 10 yr. old car that has been paid off since day 1, paying $100+ for a great pen I use every day is right up my alley. See you again in 10 years... maybe. read more

So my first visit here was great... subsequent visits, not so much. Could the staff be anymore dour? Like seriously, would it kill you to smile or even act halfway interested in your job? I'll stick to shopping online I guess, even though I'd love to support a local business. The past two times I've visited the girl hasn't even looked up to greet me. Then when I tell her what I'm looking for she acts like it's a huuuuuuge burden to even open her mouth to engage with me. Ach. What happened to the guy who was working here on my first visit? What a shame! 5 stars if the owner teaches his staff customer service skills and instructs them on how to smile. read more

They have a "Back in 5 minutes sign" on the door without a sign with their daily hours posted anywhere. I was waiting in front of their store to buy a gift that I need for someone. After a little while a lady came out and said that that sign is always on the front door and that they closed at 7:00. She looked at me like I was supposed to know that. Really? (chuckling as I walk back to my hotel) I'm just wondering why they just don't take that sign off of the door at closing. read more

I have visited this store about 4 times and all but once the store owner was there and was as helpful and polite as anyone could desire. However, on my last visit about an hour ago, the service was so bad and off-putting that it practically forced me into opening this Yelp account. My wife and I entered the store where there was only another couple shopping and a lady behind the counter sitting almost out of sight. I said "Hi" and she replied but did not move so I assumed she was busy and would get to us in a moment. After a few minutes I asked if she was busy and she replied "No" and continued to sit. My wife I exchanged glances but proceeded even though it seemed like the lady was not having a good day. I began to explain the problem I was having with the nib of my fountain pen. The lady stood and held her hand out I assumed for my pen (which I placed in her hand) but she didn't say anything. I continued to explain as she dipped my pen in nearby water and began writing with it. After making some testing? strokes on a handy pad of paper she took out a small square sheet of what looked like plastic and began writing on it. I asked "What does that do?" she replied "It's like sandpaper and smoothes the nib." I asked for my pen back (which she handed to me) and asked her if she really thinks its a good idea to simply start sanding the tip of my pen without informing me or better yet getting permission. Defensive response: "Well you said it was scratchy." To which I responded, I guess my question wasn't clear- How do you think its okay to start doing ANYTHING to my pen without my permission or any discussion or anything?" She did apologize somewhere in there but I wasn't going to let her continue without some acknowledgement of the standard service/customer relationship: One does not begin altering, adjusting, grinding, sanding or anything without permission to do so and an explanation of the procedure you are performing. We promptly exited the store and dammit I forgot to get more ink. Is there a way to give the store a better rating for times when the owner is there? read more

I have over the course of the past two years spent a significant amount of money as well as referred friends to this store. I have given the store multiple chances assuming that every once in awhile people simply have a bad day. However, for the past three visits the persons working have been rude, disinterested, and even misled me. We have been passive agressively suggested to leave because the person running the store wanted to duck out hours before the actual closing time. The last time I went in the store looking for a Lamy 2000. I was assured the pen I was looking at was the 2K, but turns out it was a Lamy Studio. After repeated failings, I will no longer shop here and no longer recommend it. read more

I contacted this store because they had a discontinued pen that I had been looking for. The verbiage on the website was questionable so I sent an email and Jeff responded that he would see if the distributor had any in stock. I put the pen in the shopping cart because I wanted to purchase it. The pen on Pen Place had the price of $103.15 with free shipping. He wrote back saying it was available and in three finishes. I told him which one I wanted. He told me that they were now on the web site but guess what? The price is now approx $151.00! I wrote him back to discuss this and he said that he would be out all week but 'Hunter' would call me back. Hunter did NOT call me back; I called HIM back and when I was questioning what was going on HUNTER hung up on me! I was professional with both of these individuals. Oh, by the way! The item from my shopping cart was conveniently removed and not by me. read more

Glad to pay the price for excellent service and knowledge! Great experience there last weekend!

I visited the Pen Place over a year ago at the recommendation of a colleague. I am so glad I did. I bought my first fountain pen there. The salesperson answered questions, showed passion, patience, and enthusiasm when answering questions and offering guidance. She let me try different pens and experiment with different types of nibs. A great experience. I now write exclusively with fountain pens and look forward to returning every time I am in K.C. read more

I was in the area and stopped in to visit the Pen Place. I found the staff to be very friendly, knowledgeable, and willing to help me in selecting a fine writing instrument. I fell in love with nice pens when I bought my first high-end pen as a freshman in college. I used to live in Kansas City and I have spent a ton of money at the Pen Place over the past twenty-six years on numerous pens and paper products. I get back to KC occasionally now to visit friends and I always stop by the Pen Place because (1) there is no pen store near my current place of residence, and (2) I always had positive experiences at the store in the past. My last few visits and calls over the past 3-4 years have not been so great. The guy that works there (Charles) is friendly, asks questions, makes suggestions, and will spend time helping you. The lady that works there is not very friendly and uncommunicative. If you ask too many questions she will tell you that she has to move on to other customers and cut you off. Pens like those sold at The Pen Place are luxury items. I expect top drawer customer service when I go to a brick & mortar shop like this. Based upon my latest call earlier today I don't think I will be purchasing anything else from this store. I can just buy the same items on Amazon and bypass the attitude. read more

My husband is a big pen fan and I used to dwell in a realm of pen ignorance. After visiting with the helpful staff at the Pen Place, my knowledge has increased a bit. The only downside to this place is that the small square footage means major congestion if there are more than 4 customers in the store. read more

I LOVE this store! The people are always very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The very first time I was in the store I had a fountain pen that wasn't working properly. Even though the pen was not purchased there, the man fixed my pen at no charge! I have been a loyal customer ever since and have referred several other friends, relatives, acquaintances, and co-workers to the Pen Place. Needless to say I am the happy owner of several pens and related accessories from this fabulous little shop. :) read more
