Late night flight and arrived at my hotel hungry, hoping to find a place to eat. Stumbled on this place and it was a HUGE success!!!! Hole in the wall spot was busy on a Thursday night at 11pm. Walked in and a young man behind the counter was tending to boiling pots and let me know the menu: 1 - Potato dumplings 2 - Meat dumplings Keep it simple right?!!! Went with the meat dumplings and a can of Diet Coke for just $11!!! Food far exceeded expectations. Dumplings were delicious and the sauce was spicy (which I love). Delicious Russian dumplings. That's all they serve here and there are 2 flavors: beef or potato. Then you choose a topping and get sour cream to go with it. We got one of each flavor. They came out piping hot with a piece of bread on top. The beef was so good especially with the butter topping. The potato was ok with the flavor not being as robust as the beef and we had chosen curry powder topping for this one. Order at the counter and grab seat at this small restaurant. They also have Siracha hot sauce at the counter if you want some heat on the dumplings. I wished they had recycling bins since everything was served in plastic containers as well as the utensils. read more

With Talking Heads playing (and hundreds of old records on the shelves), and only five tables, I had a great meal today at pel'meni. Known by locals as a after-bar place for a delicacy, I went at 2PM on a Friday, elbowed myself into a table, ordered a root beer and a clam box filled with meat dumplings with butter and curry powder. Side of sour cream. Cooked to order. Delightful service. Great energy to this place. Loved the experience from start to finish. Service, yes, Ambiance, yes. Food, oh my yes. And good value at $11 for the dumplings and the soda. Good deal! Ate my way through Alaska, and as much as I like the cuisine over all in Anchorage, this spot in Juneau rivals the top of my state list. This was completely unexpected but truly amazing. These are the best dumplings I've ever had. There was only one person working while 3 cruise ships came in. She was very attentive and took care of everyone quickly. It was small and it's not easy to get a table but we were quickly able to get seated. Pel'meni was a 'must-go' place on our Alaskan cruise itinerary while in Sitka. So many have recommended it and I am glad we listened because who knew something so simple could be so delicious?! We went to the location in Sitka, but there is also one in Juneau. It's a small establishment, but they have a system down for getting orders out. We waited a few minutes, but nothing crazy. Just be patient as there's typically 1-2 people working at a time. When we got our order, the dumplings were fluffy and flavorful. We ordered both their potato and meat dumplings and both were wonderful. The fixins that come with are a must and just adds more depth of flavor. We were in port for the day, and my nephew reaaaaallly wanted to try Russian dumplings. Having no idea what to expect, we meander along the way until Yelp says we've arrived. This one-room eatery is very... Alaskan- in all the best ways! Super informal; someone was leaning in the windowsill of an open window when we arrived. There were a dozen orders ahead of ours, and one employee (recently trained, he casually explained) who was doing all the work. The menu is very simple- homemade dumplings + whatever you'd like as topping. Pre-measured servings of sour cream wait in the cooler case by the vintage record & extensive record collection. Nothing was spinning while we were there but it seems as though it's still in service. We ordered 2 beef dumplings with no cilantro but all the other options, and got to watch the employee do all the work- it's amazing to see the process! Within 15 minutes we had freshly cooked dumplings in to-go containers (that's all they offered) and were on our way back to the ship. I have very little experience with Russian food, but I know what's yummy, and these dumplings were so great! Tender dough, juicy filling, and the toppings were surprisingly good foils to the richness of the broth & meat (yeah, I got the sriracha). Not sure if I'll ever be back in Juneau, but the next time I see Russian dumplings on the menu, I'm certainly going to order them! read more

While visiting Juneau, Alaska, I tried Russian dumplings for the first time! Russia owned Alaska originally but sold it during a war to raise money, so there is still some Russian culture in certain areas of Juneau. The dumplings were soft and we had one batch with potato centers and one with beef centers. The sauce at the bottom tasted like a sriracha and vinegar mix and the dumplings were topped with some cilantro. Almost couldn't find this place in the Historic Merchants Wharf but was so glad we did. It came highly recommended and it totally aligned with its reputation. Small space with a few tables in a little restaurant/ store looking area but dang.. their dumplings!!! Choice of potato or meat ( we got both... As a die-hard dumpling lover, I was so excited to try Pel'meni after seeing all the rave reviews and social media hype. Dumplings are basically my favorite food--soup dumplings, Asian dumplings, chicken and dumplings--you name it, I'm in. I also love all the ingredients Pel'meni is known for: cilantro, cumin, vinegar, hot sauce. So I really thought this would be a slam dunk. Unfortunately, it just didn't hit the mark for me--or anyone in our group of four. We ordered both the potato and beef versions and split them, and while they looked promising, the flavor just kind of fell flat. It wasn't that they were bad, but something about the flavor combo just didn't come together in the way we were hoping. And for a table full of adventurous eaters, we were surprised to find we didn't even finish them. I really wanted to love this spot, and I can see how some people might enjoy the unique flavor profile, but it just didn't work for us. Wow! I love Yelp finds. I enjoy opening the app and checking what is in the area. This is not one of Juneau's most famous tourist places but it should be. The simple dumplings are pillowing dumplings of perfection! We ordered 1 beef and 1 potato. She was able to mix it up for us since we ordered two. We had all the toppings. Butter, curry, cilantro and some other ones I forgot! I added sour cream to mine but they were amazing! $9 for a serving and it was very filling! Drinks remained reasonably priced instead of marked up high. It was clear this is a local favorite. One staff was able to keep the customers moving and orders coming! These little dumplings are so flavorful and delicious. They're a bit spicy with everything on them, so keep that in mind if you're sensitive to spice. I added lots of sour cream and that helped mellow out the spice and give it a nice creaminess. The service was okay, though it took forever for our food to be ready. Only one person is working to make the dumplings, so it's understandable. The ambiance is cute with some little decorations and books everywhere, but keep in mind that it's super small with not a lot of seating. I opted for potato with everything on it and it was delicious and flavorful without being too spicy. Unfortunately, upon arrival, the staff informed us that they wouldn't be able to serve food until 11:50 AM. If a restaurant advertises an opening time, customers should reasonably expect that food will be available at that time--not 20 minutes later. I've never had Russian Dumplings before, but after eating these, I understand the satiating comfort that this food provides especially in the harsh northern winters. Im a tourist traveling through Juneau and I'm also a first generation American with Russian parents that grew up on pelmeni. Obviously my mom makes the best ones but these are pretty pretty pretty good if I may say. Very soft and pillowy and filled with flavor. Not sure how I feel about the curry seasoning, next time I'd leave it off. But if I was drunk or starving or both, this comfort food joint will always hit the spot. And they do it very well. Very limited seating. You can opt for the toppings, or not. One was curry powder, which doesn't sound very Russian to me. We checked out this local gem after hearing about it on travel IG accounts. It's warm comfort food for everyone including those who aren't Russian. We had the beef dumplings, potato is the other option (heard it was just as good), topped with cilantro, curry powder and butter with a side a sour cream. Served up warm with a $2 drink of choice (water or soda). It was delicious and flavorful! The sour cream adds a depth of flavor and you can have hot sauce with a sweet tang on the side which my husband liked. We came in February where it was 38 degrees and these dumplings warmed us up and filled our bellies. The staff member was super helpful and nice.
