Pelican Reef Apartments at first glance look fantastic. People are friendly, it's right in front of Jobos beach, they use bleach to clean the rooms so there's no musty smell, they have cable, internet, and air conditioning. But my three night stay there was far from restful. I stayed for three nights November 16th-19th, and choose this hotel after checking out several in the area. Single rooms ran $90 per night, somewhat negotiable, see below.
Problem #1: For some reason the wireless was not compatible with my computer so I was unable to access the internet. Others didn't have this problem so again, it could have been my equipment.
Problem #2: On the third night the air conditioning went out. No one was around to fix it so I had a rough time sleeping. This was exacerbated by mosquitoes that would not have caused a problem with the air conditioning. There was no staff on hand so I called early morning and spoke with who I think was the owner. She refused to return any of my money, but offered to move me to another room when the help showed up. 2.5 hours later, no one, and I was in a fitful sleep getting bit by daytime dengue spreading mosquitoes. Puerto Rico has a dengue epidemic at the moment, so this was concerning. Finally, the cleaner showed up, moved me to a much nicer room and waved the check out time which was nice, but too little too late, especially without a refund. This room had also been vacant and was a single which begs the question, why didn't they put me there initially?
Problem #3: When I first worked out the room price with the manager I was told if I paid in cash they would charge $5 less per night ($85 instead of $90). My ATM card did not work in the nearby cash machine so I paid cash for one night and used my debit for 2 nights. I can't help but feeling taken advantage of since they used my debit card, especially given the fact that I slept so little on the third night (see above) and received zero refund.
As a side, there's a bar next door, so if you're around on the weekend get a room away from that bar since it can be pretty noisy. I was close to it, but the noise didn't bother me.
I likely could have paid a lot less to stay in the off season and been much more well rested. That said, people were friendly and in theory this place could be comfortable if they got their act together. If this was a one time thing, they should take responsibility and provide a refund. I would be much more understanding. The only reason they got two and not one star was for the move to the new room and extra few hours without a check out time. read more
