Villa Tropical - Villa Tropical @ Shacks Beach

    Villa Tropical

My bf is a regular annual guest at Villa Tropical and made a reservation here for a week for us…read morebefore Christmas this year. Although he'd reserved a studio, when we arrived, we found we had been upgraded to a one-bedroom unit, as the studio's door was being repaired. Late check in was very easy. The property's deck is large and has a gorgeous view of the beach directly below. You really cannot beat the location of Villa Tropical on Shacks. We enjoyed drinking our coffee on the deck whilst watching the sun rise in the mornings before grabbing our gear and walking down the short flight of steps to the sand. The gift shop within the office is a major time saver, too, when you need a drink or snack but don't want to drive. The Econo supermarket is only about an 8-minute drive away, though, when you do want to do a grocery run. It was awesome having a fully stocked kitchen and being able to cook and eat in most meals. We loved grilling on the deck at sunset! The Ola Lola restaurant is a cute spot a short walk away for food or drinks when one would rather skip cooking, too, and in each room, there is a very thorough guide compiled by the management with information on where to find all kinds of things in the area, from film development to entertainment. It was extremely convenient to be able to do laundry on the premises also. The staff are super helpful and maintain VT very well. Our unit (1B) was clean and comfortable, and by the end of our stay, we had fallen into a nice, homey routine. I was sad to leave and understand why Shacks is a place so many return to every year. The beach is clean, the big waves break far from the shore, there are interesting reefs for snorkeling, many days have adequate wind for kitesurfing, and there is a friendly surfer community among those who stay in the area both longer term and seasonally.

I will start with all the positive things this resort has to offer. First of all, as you can see in…read moremy photos, the beach here is insane! Probably the best beach in the whole island of PR. The beach is free/for the people however this resort/the owner owns that whole lot in front of this beach. Which is why you pay 300$ a night for a cabin/house here right in front of this amazing beach called "Montones". Once you are a guest in this resort you are able to park your car there, where its safe, and simply walk back and forth from the beach to your cabin. This, in my opinion, is the only reason this place has lasted for 30+ years here in Isabela, Puerto Rico. And the reason they are able to over-charge their guests for their stay. Now, the problem with the cabin per se is that you pay as much as a 5 star hotel per night yet you do not receive the same quality inside the cabin as you would in another resort. For example, we were in a cabin for 6 ppl, 3 bedrooms and only one bathroom. The kitchen was microscopic, the fridge was minuscule and the dining table was for four ppl. The tiny TV didn't work without internet and the wifi was non existent. The living seats and balcony seats were one of the most uncomfortable seats I've seated before. The bathroom was pretty beat up and the bed sheets were worse than a hospital's bed sheets and the AC units were only in the 3 bedrooms and not in the common areas. In other words the inside of the cabin needs some MAJOR updates PRONTO! I know- who cares? I was walking distance from one of the most wonderful and beautiful beaches of this island. Yet when you pay 300$ + a night it stings a bit. Overall would I stay here again? Absolutely. Because of montones beach and the accessibility of this amazing piece of heaven! Not because of the quality/updates of the resort.

Hace demasiado calor y no tienen abanicos siquiera. El servicio es deficiente. Una de las empleadas es tan desagradable que a la primera interacción con ella, sientes deseos de irte. FOOD 10 out of 10 !! Munfongo in Garlic Cream is AMAZING!! Portion Sizes are humongous, My wife who is Puerto Rican could not finish each meal, that's how big the amount of food they give you. These two ladies Yahiri & Jaynelle, were super friendly and made our stay so enjoyable. They both work so hard and are OUTSTANDING at there jobs!! The Pool area is very very nice , and the location is perfect , close to three super beaches, and a really nice Golf Course (Punta Boriquen Golf Club) ,which I played Three times this stay. My only negative is the the room has no micro waves. I will stay here again my next visit for sure , affordable ,pleasant staff and great Food and pool area. Frank P

A sink in the "kitchenette" would be desirable. It looks like there was plumbing piping there at one time but they apparently removed it. So along with that no dishware/utensils to use. The floor felt like it's hasn't been swept the entire week I stayed there and they don't mop properly, if you step out the bathroom with wet feet it feels like there is still slippery floor cleaner there. I have tile floors just like that and it's obvious it's done completely half assed. ... But BY FAR THE WORST PART OF THIS HOTEL IS THE BATHROOM. THE SHOWER HAS NO BARRIER TO KEEP THE WATER FROM FLOODING OUT THE SHOWER ON THE REST OF THE BATHROOM FLOOR AND IN TO THE HALLWAY. On top of this, the shower floor itself was made very badly. The metal drain catch sunk from the tile floor about an inch so you have rough grout and broken tile pieces under your feet that can cut yourself or twist your ankle if you aren't careful. There is also no place to put your toiletries/hygiene products everything has to go on the floor. If you ever question why the Marriott next door is completely packed every day of the week and El Faro is bare bones empty here's your reason why. They get 2 stars because the a/c worked, had Paul Mitchell shampoo and conditioner and the people at the front desk were nice.

Comfort factor is minimal so don't expect too much. There is a Marriott hotel across the street. I went there for great WiFi signal, casino, restaurant and bar. The staff at this hotel was very friendly. There is a decent sized pool on property as well, although I didn't use it, so I won't comment further. This hotel is right at Ramey military base, so if you have an ID, you can shop at the exchange which has a variety of items to make your stay more comfortable.
