For starters the condos are conveniently located on El Paso's West Side - close to pretty much every amenity you might need and just a 10 min drive to downtown. The condos sit right up next to the Franklin Mnts, with hiking trails practically right outside the front door. The unit was carefully stocked with all of the basics - including in unit laundry, just about every kitchen utensil you can imagine, and of course furniture, linens, etc. A desk and office in one of the bedrooms worked exceptionally well for me when working from home. The grounds are well maintained, well lit at night, and the folks I met who were permanent residents were overwhelmingly friendly and courteous. In addition to all of this there were several instances where I needed help from Bob or Carolyn - recommendations for certain things, or help letting family in the unit when they were visiting and I wasn't able to be there to meet them. Bob and/or Carolyn were always happy to assist if they were able. They were also always up for a friendly chat about salsa, local restaurants, tennis, or just about anything. I truly felt like we became friends during the short time I stayed at Camelot. I can't recommend these units enough for a short or medium term stay. I also can't recommend or thank the owners Bob and Carolyn enough for making my stay in El Paso about as good as it could have been : )

The are both veteran climbers and registered guides, and so you never have to worry about gaining park access or finding a project. They know the Hueco terrain like it's their back yard...because it is. The house is absolutely miraculous. So rustic and beautiful. The beds are hand crafted, the dining room table that seats 12 was hand poured and finished by Rocco. The authenticity of this establishment is so romantic and charming with an outdoor fire pit, a wood-burning fireplace, plush couches, private rooms, a shared bunk room, tile and soapstone sinks, vaulted ceilings, terracotta floors, and wooden doors. I love that I have free reign to cook in the kitchen, and hot water to take a shower whenever I like. For those of you who aren't familiar with the terrain down there, there is no water piping system in the town of Hueco, so water is trucked in and stored in water tanks - the fact that these guys have running water, let alone hot water is a HUGE LUXURY! Rocco and Mary always go out of my way to make sure my experience is great. And it always is. I plan to book a trip to the Hacienda at least once a year for the rest of my life.

Initially, we asked about the casita, for four adults and small children. They said we're too many. Then we asked about booking the casita and a room, got turned away. Guess they don't like kids. REPLY: We were certainly willing to rent out as much space/rooms necessary to adhere to your occupancy rules. You mentioned several times in our conversation that your guests valued peace and quiet. You kept saying that a group would disrupt that, as if a group of 5 (which is allowed in the casita) is not a group. If the casita and a separate room were not available, you could have said that but you didn't. The only conclusion I can come up with is that it's because we had small children, you assumed we would be loud, as if a group of 5 adults can't be just as rowdy. Other comments in the reviews mention you were rude, and I got to say, the tone you used over the phone wasn't very friendly either.

It's always a worry when trying to find a place like this and only booking for one night but it was no problem at Casitas de Gila. Get ready for a 5 mile dirt road to get there but rest assured the road is well maintained and not scary for those traveling in a regular passenger car. As others have mentioned, be sure to grab your supplies in Silver City or bring them with you because once you get to Casitas de Gila, you're not gonna want to leave, especially if it means traveling in the evening! Checked in at the office with Becky and she was kind and friendly. Michael greeted us at our casita and gave us the grand tour. He's a very friendly, knowledgeable man (geologist) who gave us so much information about the land, the history, animals and dark skies. The casita (we were in the bird casita) is so comfortable! Super comfy bed, lots of plush towels and extra blankets/pillows, heated floors, BBQs (charcoal and propane), birdseed to feed the tons of quail, entertainment in the way of board games, books and such, a telescope and lots of stuff for cooking to make your stay enjoyable. All the dishes/cookware you'd need, coffee/tea/filters, spices/seasonings, condiments and included were a fresh half gallon of milk, orange juice, bagels, English muffins, cream cheese, butter, jellies/jams and a delightfully delicious loaf of pumpkin pecan bread that Becky makes. Incredible! We grilled steaks and corn on the Weber grill and enjoyed a night of board games when we weren't outside stargazing. The little art gallery is full of jewelry (Becky makes some), beautiful oil paintings (Michael is a great artist), t-shirts, cups, and plenty of other interesting items. We purchased a t-shirt and cup with the Casitas name on them and bought a very interesting and unique mask made from a gourd. We loved our stay at Casitas de Gila and would love to stay there again!

He has time to share a story or 2 & he's not only entertaining, but a wealth of knowledge regarding the gem & mineral industry. The other 2 rooms, were occupied by a couple from Nebraska, Brian/Sandy (stay strong) & a couple from Arizona, Jack/Kelly. Hopefully see you all next year There are no kids running around here, only adults. You can make the 10 minute walk to town if you'd like or drive. I wasn't charged for the reservation until check in and the deposit for incidentals was only $13. That was a low and weirdly specific number considering most hotels I've stayed at charge a minimum of $50-$100. I didn't bother with any of the amenities since I wasn't staying long. There is a fridge in the lobby with bottled drinks for purchase but they have coffee and a soda fountain in the dining area so you could grab a cup and get a drink at any time. The elevators are down the hall and around the corner, out of view from the lobby. My room was clean, but everywhere smelled like root beer. I inspected the kitchen and noted the full cabinet of glasses and dishes. The utensils were in the drawer under the stovetop and they were "clean" in the sense that they were washed off and left to air dry because they were all covered with water spots. There were also measuring cups and water pitchers, and microwavable bowls in the microwave. The inside of the microwave smelled like old pasta. The microwave, dish washer, and fridge were pretty old but they seemed to function just fine. The fridge made loud humming noises periodically which was kind of annoying, but I couldn't hear it when the bedroom door was closed. There was no hand soap in the kitchen, only green dish soap. The hand soap by the bathroom sink had a horrendously strong odor. I could still smell it on my hands, even several hours later and after several more washes. The light in the bathroom doesn't turn on right away and it flickers a lot before coming on. The fan had a weak motor to the point where I wondered if it worked at all. The walls of the tub were really high and even an average sized person would have to take a big step to get in. The only ceiling light is in the kitchen and like most hotel rooms, I had to have the curtains open or turn on every lamp in the suite to light the rest of the space. There was one light switch that didn't seem to connect to anything. The queen size bed was ok, but the frame was really squeaky on the left side. I had to sleep on the right side of the bed because it kept squeaking every time I moved. The pillows were huge so I moved all but one off the bed because they took up too much space. The suite had extras of just about everything - tissues, toilet paper, paper towels, bath towels, etc, which was nice considering most hotels don't provide extra anything unless you ask for it specifically. The night was peaceful, for the most part. There were some noisy neighbors in the adjacent rooms and the traffic from the highway was slightly disturbing. A lot of guests brought their pets (this hotel accommodates small pets) but I didn't hear any barking dogs during my stay. Over the years I've noticed that nicer hotels seem to have mediocre breakfast offerings, or they charge you a separate fee for breakfast, while the less-nice hotels have better breakfasts. I was disappointed with the food here and had hoped it would have been better. The sausage patties were dry and rubbery and the scrambled eggs were very watery. The seasoned potatoes were ok, and I didn't try the waffles. The bagels and toast were hard and a bit stale, and the butter and jams didn't have much flavor. The hard boiled eggs were a bit overcooked and I didn't even try to go for any of the dairy products. The cereal was located on a little table in the corner. There was a small section of what I thought was a salad bar, but there was no lettuce so I wasn't sure what these items were for. There was salsa, cheese, green onion, tomato, and cucumber. I was thinking that if there were tortillas available, you could have made breakfast burritos. Next to this selection was a variety of fruit and yogurt. The yogurt looked more like sour cream. I tried the orange and cranberry juice from the juice fountain and they both had a weird aftertaste. I opted to get a cup of iced tea from the soda fountain instead. Overall it was a nice stay and if I have the need to book a room in town again, I'll definitely look into this place first.
