VIA Rail - Lounge car for the sleeper cabin passengers

VIA Rail

As with another Yelper, I didn't utilize the VIA Rail services either. Considering the fact that I…read morecame to Halifax by a cruise ship, there was no point for me to take a train unless I wanted to go somewhere so far away that I would miss the ship. Every time I came to Halifax by cruise ship (including most recently), I've always ended up stopping here whenever I head back to the cruise ship terminal. I've always stopped in here just to take a break from all of the walking. Inside the terminal was a big, clean, open space. Some indoor plants made the space look even better. There was a good amount of benches available for those who just wanted to either take a break or wait to catch their next train. The benches looked clean and felt okay, which was fine. The restrooms were okay too. At the time I went, it felt quiet, which was nice. They had vending machines for those who wanted to buy snacks, and a ticket office for those who needed to utilize the rail. They also had the entrance to the train platforms, in which you had to go outside in order to board the train. (Apologies for no photos due to having no additional memory.) The exterior of the building looked historical. Two poles stood on each side of the entrance, which were attached to the roof above. Those poles looked like the ones that you would see on certain historical government buildings. There was a little statue on top of the entrance which showed two people standing around an object. I didn't know what that represented, but it looked cool. The location of this rail terminal isn't too far from some of the major points of interest in the area. The terminal is connected to the Westin hotel, which is convenient for those who want to stay over for a night or two after riding the rails. The Atlantic Superstore is right next to the terminal, which is convenient for those who need to buy groceries before or after utilizing the rails. Downtown Halifax and the Harbourwalk aren't far away for those who want to walk over to those areas. Overall, I enjoyed my visit here, just as much as my previous times when I was younger.

Although most of the staff were helpful and pleasant the train is very outdated ( not been updated since the 70's.) Also the WIFI was basically non existent. The food they served was mediocre at best and my friend actually developed a stomach ache and diarrhea after eating his dinner of some sort of beef dish.

There's nothing quite like feeling swindled at five in the morning before a twelve-hour travel day,…read morea fact of which I was reminded yesterday when Flytime Taxi showed up outside of my house for a trip to the airport. Since I generally don't like surprises that early nor the looming fear of missing a flight, I purposely went ahead and booked a town car to be at my house at an ungodly hour to know that all I had to do was roll out of bed. I booked online through Flytime - a website with apparently mixed messages as to whether they are a town car or limo service - prepaid at a much higher rate than your average cab, got a confirmation by text message, and was feeling pretty good about the situation. The convenience of online/mobile reservations kind of rocked my socks. The following morning, I received an uninvited 'wake-up call' from Flytime at 4:45am. Not cool. If someone has the foresight to prebook a town car, they likely are the type of person who knows how to also set an alarm. Strange. Stranger still, they were already parked outside of my house - clearly worried at the lack of lights on. Wake-up call, or covering their own asses? I'll let you be the judge. But hey, at least they were there on time! It wasn't until my way out the door that I realized it was a Yellow Cab. A plain, old, dated Yellow Cab. No leather seats, no Lincoln emblems, just the same car I could wave down at Pizza Corner or call from Bob's. Suddenly, I was paying $20 more for the same fifteen minute drive from my house to the airport for absolutely no reason. I also had to give him directions. So pretty much the opposite of what I wanted.

Very reliable. I receive a reminder text or call the night before early morning airport runs and…read morethe drivers always show up on time.
