However, Secrets of Strixhaven came out yesterday as the new set for retail. The shop was full of people and product. I have never been in a store so chock-full of product on sale. It had the vibe of an old hold in the wall library. In the back of the store was where the shop owner stood to take orders of cards and packs. He had literally every set of Magic Card packs I had ever heard of, which is definitely different than other stores. The prices were decent for them as well. The best part was they have a shop cat named Panther that greeted me as soon as I walked in. Soooo cute!

On Saturday, August 12th from 7 to 9 pm a reception will be held for the opening of a new art exhibition at the Art Association of Oswego. The exhibition, by Suzanne Gaffney Beason, is titled My Life in Comics / My Life in Art. Part of the show is a display of Ms. Beason's personal collection of original drawings by well-known comic artists from her days at Marvel Comics, where she was assistant editor to high-profile comics such as Spider-Man and X-Men. Also on exhibit will be original prints and drawings from her current work as a graduate student in SUNY Oswego's Master of Arts program in Studio Arts. This includes both figurative work and highly abstract explorations of color, shape and texture. According to the Art Association's exhibition coordinator Bill DeMott, "As an undergraduate at SUNY Oswego in the 80's, Suzanne got a fantastic education, one that took her to New York City to work for the likes of Robert Blackburns' Printmaking Workshop NYC, Marvel Comics, Reader's Digest, Pearson Education and eventually DC Comics. But when DC moved to California, she made the brave decision to return to Oswego to pursue her first love, fine arts. Her current work is stunning and in her new art one can see all the knowledge gained from years of working with figures and bold abstractions. We welcome Suzanne and her husband Kirk to this community. Their energy and enthusiasm for art--and for music--are truly refreshing." The reception for this exhibition is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. The exhibition will run until Sunday, August 27th. Regular gallery hours are from 10 am to 1 pm on Saturdays and from 1 pm to 4 pm on Sundays or by appointment. They are also pretty no-nonsense as in you are not going to find their walls filled with new comics and those 1:100 variants, but you will find boxes and boxes of back issues. They do have some new weekly issues, but really focus on the older stuff. And they have some pretty reasonable prices. The owner is extremely knowledgeable and can answer almost anything you have a question for.

This is easily the best selection of pre 2000s comics in the CNY area, but if you want post 2000s books, he has those too. A must stop for comic collectors passing through CNY.

It's alleged that Jeff W. is partial owner, so I know the staff knows their stuff, but having them treat my elderly mother and client so well demonstrates the level these guys play at. 100% better than Larger than Life. This shop is for the "true believers" and "Constant Readers," not just the "Big Bang Theory" popular kids. I have placed orders from this store twice now and both times I have had issues with shipping…read more The first time the package was extremely delayed. I waited nearly a month to receive an order for one card. I called a few times and each time I was told: "Oh! We must have missed the card. We will send it out this week"- and then it wasn't on multiple occasions. I also never received the email that it had been sent. It just showed up one day after I had assumed it wasn't coming at all. I took another gamble on the store after they were one of the few in the province to have a specific card I needed. The order came to around $30.00 CAD. I paid for it immediately. I got the confirmation email the same time. In that email it said that I would receive an email when it was shipped. A week rolls around and I still have yet to receive an email, so I give them a call on the Monday. They tell me they're a little behind, but it will be mailed out by Wednesday for sure! By Thursday, still no email. It is now Saturday and I have called again. The postal strike went out on Friday and I was worried about my order being delayed even further despite having placed the original order nearly 2 weeks ago. They didn't ship it. So now, I have no idea when the order will come. It's dependent on the strike (understandable) but my problem lies with the fact I ordered the cards 2 weeks ago. 2 weeks before the strike put them in this situation. They offered me a refund, but the one card in the order is more on the difficult end to find- so I kind of have no choice but to wait. They also told me that I could pay for tracked shipping (about $12) which is nearly half of what the order costs. I'm just very frustrated with the entire situation. It shouldn't have taken so long to mail the order out in the first place. A week I understand- but 2? On the phone I'm constantly passed around saying they have to wait for this person or that- and when I'm given a final answer/date, it's never met. I'm going to wait on my order- hopefully the strike is resolved quickly.. but I won't be ordering from the store again. Yes, their collection is wonderful- I'll definitely give them that! They have a wide range of options so if you're in a tight pinch like I was, I get it- really, just be ready to wait awhile to get the order.

Any time I'm in a new city I visit the local used bookstore. Wasn't sure any would be open during…read morethe covid-pocalypse, but I stopped by anyway. They had a table set up at the door doing "take out" service, i.e. you say what author/genre/topic you are interested in and they bring up a small pile of books for you to look at. Got a nice stack of seven or eight sci-fi novels (it would have been more, but it has to fit in my carry-on when I fly home). Nice to see a small business finding a way to operate safely even in the current circumstances.
