This is a good place to find eccletic reading selections. They also have an awesome calendar collection. Don't go unless you have the time to ponder and peruse the entire store. read more

I like Pegasus in general: they have a great selection of used and new books as well as magazines, tchotchkes, marked-downs, and their monumental annual calendar sale, and I always used to think of this one, seemingly the largest of the three, as the little Green Apple Books that I've pined for since moving to Berkel Berkel. But I gotta say that my recent experience there, trying to sell some books for a friend, was so off-puttin' that I got set that love aside. I go in with a box of books, no one else is selling, and a woman is behind the counter - no other words or info from her except a command to "put that on the floor" and a question, "Do you want cash or credit?" Cash, I say - which sends a ripple of unhappiness through the air and no verbal response. I drift around the store a little. She answers a couple questions from the few customers in the store. She almost runs after someone asking if he HAS a question. The box is untouched. After 15 minutes or so, another person comes in and announces they have four boxes of books to sell. Still no word from her. I finally find her again and ask her how long it will take. With a panicked look in her eye, she says she's the only one in the store, and it'll be 10 minutes. Fine - it's just nice know since the meter is ticking outside. She finally looks at the books and in less than five minutes - no surprise since they usually are so picky - and asks me if I'm sure I want cash rather than credit. Yes, I'm sure - my friend is homebound and lives in SF so a credit is useless for her. The buyer pulls out one paperback, announces that she'll give me $3 and then whips around to the register and slaps three bills on the counter. I thank her and ask her if she wants ID. No. OK, so some people shouldn't be doing the kind of work they do - they can't multitask and get easily flustered and overwhelmed. But if you don't give me any information about your buying process at the moment, etc., you're going to have to reasonably expect a question or two. If the store prefers to give credit rather than cash, when it wasn't an issue in the past, that should be conveyed. But no. Essentially this Pegasus staffer acted like I ruined her day by bringing in some books to sell. OK, then I guess she'll be happy to know I'm never going to bring books to sell there again and maybe I'll even think twice about buying or ordering books there (the latter of which I do because they're a local bookseller that I thought was worth supporting). Really, people? Cordial customer service and human interaction is one of the last few legs brick-and-mortar bookstores have to stand on - if not that, then what's left? read more

Fantastic local bookstore. Great selection of new and used books as well as zines and records. Laid back, low key environment with a large selection of local authors...check it out! read more

A B-A-R (Born and Raised) San Franciscan, I have to be honest and say that I have shy-ed away from my East Bay neighbors. Why? Because going across the BB always feels like I am leaving my universe for a parallel one that just isn't quite as awesome. At any rate - Mondays off means the East Bay is REALLY just 20 minutes away...hooray! The few times I have spent time in Berkeley have somehow always brought me within proximity of Pegasus & Pendragon. A comfortable store for browsing, a helpful staff, and awesome calendars (one year I think I bought 3 calendars at once just 'cuz I couldn't make up my mind which one I liked best...everyone needs a calendar in the bathroom, right?!??!). While stopping in briefly for something specific, the kind man at the desk helped me and didn't get (visibly) annoyed when I totally biffed it on the title...oops...that's why I should write stuff down. Also couldn't help but notice that the shortened version of Pegasus and Pendragon is P&P...just like the title of my favorite book of all time...Pride and Prejudice!! Hmmm, perhaps the East Bay isn't as not-as-awesome-as-S.F. as I once thought! read more

Pegasus is a good bookstore, with a mix of used and new titles. They seem to have a good selection of recent popular books. but overall their selection is weaker than Black Oak or Moe's. I sometimes find things to buy at Pegasus, but sometimes not. I think they would have been better of with one location instead of spreading out so much. read more

Only folks who had a book on Haiti. I called in advance and they saved it for me, double checked it was the best they had before my purchase and were just all around nice folks. read more

An excellent bookstore in Berkeley with lots of great stuff on sale. When I was flying solo in Berkeley, I stopped here about once a day as the yin to my Barnes and Noble yang. I liked it better than Cody's. read more

More expense than it needs to be. My total was $23 and some change for One Hundred Years of Solitude and The Metamorphosis. That price is after I got $3 off for giving them a book. I was just expecting lower prices from a smaller bookstore. I could have gotten these in NEW condition from Barnes and Noble for about the same price. I will commend them for having good service though. However, I'm not sure I will be going back anytime soon. read more

The calendars are now on sale 3 for $10. They have a self-wrap station. How cool is that?

i came by last night to see the editors of found magazine. i am a recent fan of the magazine and find it hilarious but i was hardly in the mood for it after a really long day. i almost skipped the event but i powered through and i'm so glad i did because those guys are hilarious. there was singing, dancing (by someone who shall remain nameless) and great readings of stuff that people randomly found and submitted. i laughed, i cried. i highly recommend that you check out one of their sf appearances if you can. my attention span was limited when i got there so i didn't get to enjoy their diverse selection of magazines as much as i wanted. there were also a good amount of books i'd been wanting to read on sale. it's not far from me so i'll be back. read more

This is a medium sized bookstore. It has an impressive kids section for the size of the store. We found some interesting things. I wish it had more used books because I'm always up for a bargain. read more

Not the greatest of the East Bay used book stores, but its still worth an honorable mention. It has a good selection of books, and one of the most exaustive collections of magazines i have seen. They have everything from The Economist to Dirt Bike Weekly. Many smaller zines can be found, such as my favorite Found Magazine, and its sister Dirty Found. read more

This is Pretty embarrassing to admit, but I just recently got into the habit of reading. I know it is sad. What I mean by that is that owning actual books instead of the I-pad, Kindle, PDF, E-pub format is quite wearisome. So I am trying to develop a habit of owning a decent and moderate book collection. I actually enjoy reading and writing. So a place like Pegasus is comforting to know has stationery and new and used books. I tend to have a habit of buying a book once a month, after watching some indie film nearby. The layout of the place is as organized as it can be, and the staff is friendly with different recommendations on what to read and not. I do think it is a bit sad bookstores are becoming extinct but a place like Pegasus should be around for a while.....Hopefully. read more

The book selection, both used and new, at Pegasus isn't as expansive as Moe's or Cody's up the street, but I do like the periodical section here. Not only do they have your trashy mags like Cosmo and Us, they have a great selection of zines and specialty periodicals. I think Cody's probably has more titles in their magazine section, but Pegasus trumps them by having that comfy green armchair for the lucky browser. Also, when I'm shopping here, there's usually something pleasantly indie rock-ish playing on the stereo. read more

Great policy for buying/selling secondhand books. The store credit is redeemable for anything in the store - new, used, pencil sharpener, zine, anything. They also support local teeny tiny publishers. read more

I appreciate their attractive and diverse magazine selection, their recommended reads in nonfiction, fiction, and graphic novels... always something offbeat and quirky that will catch my attention. Great place to find gifts for kids and a lesser known novel from a writer you've always admired. read more

I popped in here quickly today and was really impressed with the art books. It was a good mix of the standard generic art monographs (plenty of Warhol, etc. here), and more unusual and interesting selections as well. I picked up a monograph of David Bailey's 1960s photographs at an awesome price. I think I hugged it the whole way home. I would definitely go back. read more

I like this book store because they have a cat, who is fat, and has a little hole it can go into. Bookstores with cats are the best kind.

Definitely a wonderful bookstore. Great sales and all the used books are in practically perfect condition, which is not always the case at a used bookstore. I got Everything is Illuminated for only $6.99 and Rosemary's Baby for only $4.99 both in absolutely perfect condition. They have some really weird and random books which is awesome. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I usually expect the staff at a store like this to be more personable and friendly and the two girls at the registers seemed pretty bored and out of it. It may have been because it was late in the day and they were probably tired so I may revise this later on. Definitely worth a visit though...or two...or three! :-) read more

I always want to be blown away when I come in here, and almost always come away disappointed. It's nicely set up, and like others have said, it's a good place to browse while waiting for something else, but not my go-to bookstore in the area. I do have a ton of respect for this little chain, and prefer the Solano location....and will forever love them for introducing me to the best pizza I've had in the Bay Area (Fist of Flour Pizza Company) during their calendar sale this year. But, I always just want the book selection to be better. read more

Great place for poetry fans. Though it is not the biggest, it is definitely the coolest poetry selection in the area. Books that you can only find online you can find here. And even if he doesn't buy your books, the guy at the counter is cute, and runs what is becoming one of the coolest poetry reading series in the bay area. Check it out. read more

i could sit in here forever and ever. reasons? * the big comfyy aqua-green chair kills. i don't think about the communal germ-factor of the comfy chairs; better to not and just enjoy the squishy, pillowy comfort. * the selection -- they may not have a zillion books, and you're not assured that what you come in looking for will be there. but you'll find something interesting that you didn't expect to find (someone used the word serendipitous -- yes, that's it). i appreciate their used-book buying habits. i pile up a stack and find a good chair, and i'm happy. * the adorable employees -- men and ladies, both, so cute. when you're sitting in the comfy chair, sneak some peeks. and then i could buy and buy, too, because their prices are super-fair. don't forget to get your frequent buyer card stamped! read more

I really enjoyed this place, there were people sleeping in the chairs by the magazines, death traps for Tea in the cooking section, a big wooden table that strategically blocks three rows of books, a fat tabby cat skulking the aisles, something with a beat you can dance to (if you have no shame) comes pounding through the art & architecture section from the bar next door, but most importantly right when you walk in.... TWILIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cardboard cutouts. Sweet. read more

Great local bookstore with a large selection of books, magazines and gifts for bookworms. If you're in downtown Berkeley, I recommend stopping by! read more

I love to browse through the random shelves of seemingly unorganized books. I listen to my music, space out completely, eventually get lost in time, while finding too many things that I want to purchase. I have always wondered about the people who give up their books which line stores like this. I am the type of person who holds onto books. I don't know if it is because they are like trophies, or if I think that someday my children will want to read the same books that I once did. None the less it is hard for me to not like a book store like this one, even though they did not have what I was looking for today. read more

I visited Pegasus last night before going home to Oakland. WOW! I found the staff friendly and inter-active and the book that I was looking for! I highly recommend checking them out. read more

Looking for used books is like searching for buried treasure. There's always that sense that if you *just* find the right aisle you'll stumble on that ancient tome of ultimate everything you've been looking for. It happened to me once when I found a 1928 copy of the complete works of Robert Louis Stevenson for $2. That's gold. I've been to Pegasus a couple of times, and I've already hit some good finds, a copy of the Moosewood cookbook, some great children's books, a Japanese samurai novel, and some excellent poetry. The staff at Pegasus are helpful and pleasant. They'll chat you up about your choices and recommend books and music. And if they don't have it, they'll help you find it somewhere else! Overall it's enough to convince me that there's gold in them thar hills! read more

This location is the best Pegasus bookstore location out of all the locations. I like how there is a bathroom and a small upstairs area. I used to come here a lot. I bought a few Tin Tin books here. I love this location. I would come back here if I am ever in the area. I also like how there is a discount for students if they show their student ID. read more

This place rules because I found a tiny planner filled with pictures of kittens for $2 through their calendar sale. Also, I couldn't find this stupid WWII book I had to get for my Western Civ class so this lady immediately called their Solano location and told them to hold their copy of it for me. How helpful of her. Lastly, I met the cutest fat cat here while looking at some pretty well-made zines. read more

Love this place! Really do, but came in the other day to buy a book and saw a couple of old guys bickering behind the counter. They argue every time I'm in there. Other customers seem to be annoyed as well. One lady was so upset that she walked right out the door, and the old guys never even noticed because they were too busy bickering. Anyway, Pegasus is great, and would be amazing if someone put a leash on these drama queens. I went in the other day looking for a copy of a Roland Barthes book that is quite rare. Luckily they has it, and Amazon.com doesn't even have it! It's the best book store in the East Bay + it's next door to Thalasa, which is amazing. (Best bar in Berkeley) read more

this is a pretty cool bookstore i have to say. i like their layout of their book selection, and it was awesome that there was a calender sale when i came here, too. read more

Awesome bookstore! I totally dug their vegan/vegetarian section, and how many of the new vegan cookbooks they stocked :). The prices are pretty good, especially on the used books! They seemed to stock a lot of different magazines you wouldn't find elsewhere, too. read more

Decent but limited selection of titles, prefer Moe's, Shakespeare, and Black Oaks. Now that Half Price is downtown this may become a challenge factor but I do say that the overall quality of the selection here is quite good and for that they get the stars (I'd prefer to give 3.5 in this case). read more

Great and cozy indie bookstore with not just books galore but also used CDs, stationary, little knicknacks like magnets and postcards, and bumperstickers. I like the vibe in this bookstore. It feels calm and relaxing and whenever I've gone it's never crowded. I like that they have so many used books and that even the used books are in pristine condition. I especially like their graphic novel selection. They have a lot of good finds for a fraction of what it would cost to buy the books new. This is good as I go through graphic novels at a rapid speed. There's also a store cat that hangs around which adds a certain charm to the place. read more

Good music selection - something that actually doesn't distract you or make you feel sleepy when you're looking for/reading a book. They don't mind if you sit down and read a bit, and are really nice about letting you use the employee restroom. Sure, their selection isn't as large as Barnes & Noble's, but I don't mind choosing from a smaller subset. Like other people have mentioned, very chill atmosphere, which makes me want to come back, from all the way across the campus, to read a book here. read more

Wanted to fall in love with this place like most everyone else who has been here, but in my opinion it felt a little overrated. Came in on a Wednesday night after class around 8:00pm and it wasn't busy at all. Was never asked if I needed help, which doesn't usually bother me, just an observation. Saw a few books here that interested me, but I wasn't in love with anything that I just had to have. I'll try the other locations or come back a different time, maybe on a weekend with my sister. We shall see. read more
