Anyway, here's my review of this site I…read morevisited just recently: I initially planned on visiting Table Mountain campground, just 5 minutes away, but that place was packed out the wazoo. Couldn't grab a spot. So I came here as a backup. It was 11pm or so, but my party was able to snag a spot out of 6/8 occupied sites. We grabbed an empty table and some real estate at the top of the hill. The site is used for sledding when the snow comes in for the winter, so the grade is quite noticeable. Cars must be parked at the bottom of the hill, so if you have a lot of things, be prepared for some tiring back-and-forth from the bottom to the top and back again. Since our tents were set at the very top, we had the privilege of getting some extra steps in. Each campsite here is within 50 feet of another. You are within eyesight and earshot of your neighbors - this is a bit of a downside, as I prefer camping in peace and away from other people, to get away from the city. Bring earplugs if you can spare the space. We were granted the opportunity to listen to a large family rev up their trucks throughout the first night. It went on from 11pm-3am. That would have been ideal if my definition of camping was setting up my tent in the middle of a monster truck rally. But alas, it's not. Sites also come with a grill and a fire-ring, very nice for cooking if you wish to do so. I think firewood is sold at a few stores nearby, but you can scavenge for extra around the grounds, too. The two bathrooms at the bottom of hill were a predicament. It wasn't entirely clean (which most camp potties aren't already) but you are galactically screwed if the door gets left open. Flies will swarm the two toilets and make it virtually impossible to do your business. One or two flies won't deter me from popping my squat, but I'm telling you: I instead chose to dig a hole way uphill, park myself behind a tree out of sight, and did my thing out there. It was that bad. The black plague would have been proud. On the topic of bugs: BRING BUG SPRAY. And citronella candles. And keep your tent doors closed at all times. The bugs here go crazy. Seal your foods, especially any sweets, and make sure to keep your cooking materials off the ground to avoid ants. Other than that, there was plentiful shade and the trees are swept by a decent breeze that visits every so often. It made up for the sweltering heat that had been bogging down LA for weeks. When our louder neighbors would leave to hang out at the nearby lake, it was serene and awfully peaceful. Plus, since the campground is situated between two bigger hills, the sun doesn't linger around too much during the day. While it gets the job done, this site is a sub-par escape from the city and serves only as a mediocre, last minute find; my advice would be to reserve a much nicer, cleaner, and quieter campsite months in advance. Do your research, pack smartly, and have fun.

We reserved Campground No. 12, a spacious corner lot that offers one of the BEST VIEWS of the sunset. During summer hours, the sun doesn't set fully until close to 9 pm, and from a distance, I could see the city lights, which was Lancaster. The campground provides bear lockers to store food, as bears are commonly seen in the area. It's essential to keep food properly in the evening. The campground also has flush toilets and toilet paper, though they may not be the cleanest. There's a fire pit for burning wood and a table for dining. If you forget to bring your wood, the campground host sells a bundle for $10. Overall, I had a great time hanging out with friends, and the distance is tolerable for many Angelenos.

What an awesome little spot!…read more Emphasis on little. The campsites are very close to one another with very tight parking for your vehicles. However, if you come in with more of a community mindset than seeking isolation in nature, it'll be just fine. We went camping with our teen and our toddler (sorry neighbors), but there were lots of other children around so it felt pretty family-friendly. The camp host was super friendly and they had local firewood for sale onsite. Facilities were pretty clean, even when they were a little bit more on the trashed side during a 5am bathroom run (was it children or critters, idk but the toilet paper was everywhere haha). Every campsite had a bear box, picnic bench, and fire pit; trash disposal was conveniently placed and walking distance from most campsites. Since it was July, it was on the warmer side but still fresh and beautiful. My toddler had a blast chasing all the lizards. And while we were a little nervous about the bear warnings with a hyperactive toddler in our party, we didn't see anything bigger than a squirrel. We will definitely be back!

There are also numerous pine trees throughout that provide shade and a relaxing sound with the wind. I loved the nature part of this camp, and loved that there was even a walking trail traversing the perimeter of the grounds. The campsites are well spaced out for the most part as the campground is pretty big. Some sites are on the perimeter of the camp (best sunset views) and some on the inner part of the camp such as our campsite on site 83. Our site was near a bathroom which was very clean with no stench upon arrival. We also were near a water spout which had drinking water but per the host doesn't have the best taste (so I would recommend bringing your own water if you're sensitive to that). The host that came by was very nice and proactive in telling us about not just the campground but also the area around. First off he offered us firewood for purchase that he had in the back of the truck which was a nice gesture. He also told us about a lake nearby for fishing called Jackson lake which we went to & also about the town which are all about 10 mins away. The town is small and quaint but cute! The lake is small but beautiful and perfect for a picnic. Overall our group thoroughly enjoyed this place and we will be back :)

Camped: Friday July 24-25, 2015…read more After hiking Mt Baden-Powell 2 months ago, my friends and I wanted to camp out in Wrightwood and hike Big Horn Mine next time we went out there. So after discussing dates, we settled on this past weekend. I looked up campsites around the area, checked the Forest Service website for more info, and settled on Blue Ridge Campground. Our back up campground was Guffy Campground, which is also nearby. Directions: You take the 2 Hwy past the city of Wrightwood, keep going past Mountain High Ski, and the next turn after the ski lifts is Blue Ridge Rd (I think there's an East or West added to the street sign). You make a left turn onto the street, with Wrightwood behind you. It is a dirt road, and road conditions are a little rough. We took 2 SUVs out there and they did perfectly fine. My Mazda 6 would not have made the trek up. It's about 3 miles from the turn to the campground, which is at the top of the Mountain High Ski lifts. The road takes you directly there. Campground: It says there are 8 spots. First come first serve, I think I only saw 7. You only need an Adventure Pass to camp here (you can pick one up at the ranger station, sport chalet, rei day use is $5, yearly $30), meaning the campground itself is free. There are 4 vault toilets. Decent and they had toilet paper. Each site had a campfire ring and a picnic table. The views are amazing up here. Since the campground is perched on top of a mountain, you can see city lights on both sides of the mountain. I tried to catch the sunset, but it's obscured by trees and mountains. It's still so beautiful though! I saw a glimpse of the sunrise and it lit the sky up! Tips: HIgh clearance vehicles or 4 wheel drive. Adventure pass. Call to check fire restrictions, when we went we were allowed a campfire. Bring your own water, there is no water up here.

If you do make it though, it is a very cute and well maintained little camp ground with access to the PCT. Few trail angels stopped by here to set up stations during the summer. But during this season/month, it is super super windy. If you're not into it, you might want to find another campground somewhere else. We were prepared coming for the wind but, oh boy, at night it was like 80-90mph wind, very hard to sleep if you're light sleeper like me. But you can always sleep inside the car if you have one big enough. Overall, I highly recommend. Restrooms are clean! They are planting many many trees so please watch your steps and be careful walking around the campground!

Gorgeous trail in an area of the forest that is recovering from the Bridge Fire in 2024. While it's…read moreshocking to see so many burnt trees, it's also cool to see signs of life emerging from the ashes. There were many pine seedlings to be found along the trail and lots of wildflowers called "fire-followers" that actually require and benefit from the fire to bloom. To find the trailhead, look for the Big Pines Visitor Center. The parking lot for the trail is right across the street and the standard Adventure Pass is required to park in this lot (thank goodness, it is not part of the Mountain High Ski Resort cabal, so you don't have to buy the "Big Pines" parking pass as well.) It was a bit tricky to find the actual trailhead, as it's a few feet away from the parking lot. The parking lot does have restrooms as well as ADA parking available. The trail itself is very well maintained and offers stunning views. It's pretty much uphill all the way to the Blue Ridge Campsite and (of course) downhill all the way back. It's mostly in the shade but can get warm, so make sure you have plenty of water and snacks. Look for fungi, mariposa lilies, butterflies, squirrels and birds. Highly recommended!

The trail was mostly shaded and there were creeks with running water. We saw blue jays, chipmunks, squirrels, woodpecker and other birds. It was breezy with nice views of the mountains and far out in the canyon areas. The bad: We didn't get to finish the trail because we had a toddler. I think there were only 2 parking spots. I am not sure if there were other areas you can park. It was just on the dirt by the campgrounds sign. The interesting: Lots of the trees were burnt and fallen over. We saw red plants and some interesting mushroom growing on the trees. Some areas of the trail are more narrow with a sloping hill off to the side so be careful if you're coming with kids.

Park on the street to avoid paying the ridiculous Big Pines Recreation Concession scam to give more money to Mountain HIgh Resort (even if you already paid for an Adventure Pass through Angeles National Forest, you're supposed to pay these fat cats. No.) This trail is absolutely gorgeous and a less strenuous option to the Mount Baden-Powell trail nearby. Hiking in August, I was surprised by how many flowers were still in bloom. The trail itself is wide and well-maintained for *most* of the way; however, there are a couple of spots where the trail crosses a scree field and caution is necessary. There are many gorgeous views to be seen along the way. Really a stunning hike. Take lots of water, snacks, bug spray and be safe.

I was directed to go across the street and walk down. Parking was $10 per car and across the street it was free. However, it's a walk from the parking across the street. They also have a yearly pass which is $30. They also have bathrooms close by. We fortunately found parking and unpacked and went down to the lake. There's plenty of space for a lot of people. You can fish, swim and even kayak. There is also a spot to rent out equipment to do all that. We brought our own boats for kayaking. The lake isn't too big, you can go down the whole thing within 10min or less. Very small but it's very calm and beautiful. My family loved it. It's a great spot to hang out and relax. We'll come back again if we're ever in the area.

(also its VERY easy to miss the freeway entrance for this place but because I go to mt high often, I didn't miss it, but a lot of people from my group did miss the freeway exit) I'm not sure how many cabins they have in total but our church used 3 cabins (it was a family retreat so one for women/girls, boys/men, and families with infants. we had 35 people in our party and there were a couple of empty beds in each cabin so not sure how many the limit is. chapel is night and small but yet big enough for a small group. theres a game room downstairs for the kids with pool, ping pong, etc. theres also a basketball court, volleyball court, "swimming pool" (they brought out a slide for us since we had a good amount of kids), outdoor chapel, and campfire. the place is very secluded for retreats but not too far from the city. if you have verizon, you will have service here! cabins are clean, 2 showers, 2 bathrooms in each cabin. food is so good for retreat food! staff is so helpful and so friendly.

The biggest downside was that the highway that runs right by the campsite is really noisy. There are motorcycles constantly. Even all through the night. They woke us up several times. The lake area by the campsite isn't easily accessible so it's better to drive a mile down the road to the main lake parking. We brought kayaks but the lake is narrow and a lot of people are fishing so it wasn't practical to kayak. We were worried about fishing lines. The kids caught a lot of little fish and a few small catfish. The weather in July was beautiful and a nice break from the summer heat. Overall we enjoyed it and would definitely come back again.
