Ahhh, Pease's...the bane of every parent who had a child at Butler Elementary School right around the corner, and the most pleasurable part of going to school for said students, Pease's is a Springfield institution. Penny candies are displayed throughout the store, with little bags for gathering your selections. Many hard to find and obscure candies available by the piece - it's a great way to blow your allowance if you are 7 and a great way to blow your breakfast change from D&J if you are an adult. The real draw for most people (nostalgia trips notwithstanding) are the handmade chocolates. Pease's has been making chocolates in Springfield since the 1930's and is still family owned. You won't find chile infused chocolates here, but you will find great old fashioned candies, packaged by the sweetest ladies you ever met, it really is a wonderful place to pick up a gift or a little something for yourself. read more

Peases takes me back to when I was a little girl. Whenever I found any change, you know in the sofa. I would hop on my bright orange Schwinn with the banana seat and ride like the wind to Peases. I would get a small brown paper bag and fill it with penny candies. Everyone at Peases is as sweet as they can be. My Grandmother gets each of us a large cream filled chocolate egg with our name on it every Easter from Peases. Now that my sister, mom and I live in AZ those eggs get flown out every year! Once I entered, my expectations sky rocketed because of the stunning decorations. HOWEVER, the single origin coffee that was served was not fresh brewed. It is a complete waste of a good coffee just because of the fact that it tasted acidic just like if you brewed it the night before. Awful. Disappointed. You can get way better coffee at any gas station. read more

If you need to get chocolate from Illinois and take it back to wherever you're returning to...this is THE place to get it. I love the little Illinois shaped chocolate, the dark chocolate mint meltaways (they have it in milk chocolate too), their caramel, and other chocolate goodies. My friend loves the Lincoln logs (pretzel stick dipped in chocolate), and their Lincoln penny chocolate (chocolate cast in Lincoln's silhouette with a shiny penny.) They have an awesome caramel popcorn too. As I said, they have great caramel. So who could resist! This is the downtown location. read more

Pease's chocolate has got to be one of the finest in IL - it is so delicious. I did not grow up in Springfield, but now that I haven been introduced to it, I'm in love & so is my family! I buy it for occasions and give it as gifts and fill stockings at X-mas. If you have never tried their milk chocolate almond bark...it is a must...so scrumptious!! If there is a mistake don't think they are going to make it good. Just eat whatever they give you and like it. That's the Pease's of 2020. Don't expect truffles if you order truffles. Make sure you check the package before you leave the store and what ever you do DON'T EAT ANY OF THEM. Not even if you don't know they are supposed to be truffles. Because if you eat any they won't be able to do anything at all about their mistake. They don't fix their mistakes. They won't charge you for the ones you ate and then give you the right ones. They tell you too bad. YOU ATE SOME!!! GASP. Nothing can be done if you ate any. Worst customer service i have ever seen. Hubby said they charged him $10 extra for truffles and today they said the price was the same truffles or not. This is not the Pease's of yesteryear. Back in the day you'd pay for the ones you ate and they'd give you the right ones. They used to make good when they made a mistake. NOT ANYMORE. Eat what they give you and like it or else. We were visiting Springfield and stopped in for a treat. A little pricey, but worth it. My 10 year old believes this to be the best candy store - ever. In addition to some loose candy, they make "Raggedy Anns," which are their home-made version of turtles. Also had delicious M&M fudge and chocolate-covered Oreos. Although we were only in Springfield for 4 days, we had to come back a 2nd time - and lucky for us, they were giving out free samples that day! read more

I have never actually been here myself BUT I did recieve my favorite Valentine's gift EVER from here. Chocolate covered strawberries. Oh they were heaven. I dream about those wonderfully sweet and juicy monster berries. Every Valentines since I always hope he is going to walk through the door with that white box but I haven't been so lucky since. read more

I live in Chicago and Pease's is by far the best candy store in the State of Illinois. When I am in Springfield I try and make sure to swing by and pick up some treats. The candy is excellent, all the old time favorites and new twists. The caramel is simply amazing. The prices are higher than you would pay for grocery store candy, but the quality is far superior. read more

A Springfield institution...and for good reason. Pease's candy is excellent. Great experience with having candy gifts shipped to family as well as business clients. Very nice neighborhood store with dime candy that my son loves. My favorite: mint meltaways. But all are good! They make some unique items too like candy filled fudge Easter Eggs which can be personalized. Chocolate Turkey centerpiece for Thanksgiving. Chocolate uniquely decorated high heels...very cute! And the caramel apples are the best around. read more

Very cute little shop with a big variety of very nice chocolates, pretty pricey but good quality. Staff however was rude, they advertised buy 3 fudge slices get one free and my friend did the deal and after ringing up she didn't get the last one free and they said it was an advertisement for fudge that wasn't shown and they were out of that fudge but the sign was right by the fudge that apparently wasn't part of the deal and the lady was very rude when my friend politely asked about it and the lady seemed like it would be such an inconvenience to void out the transaction and acted as if my friend was stupid. It was clearly wrongfully advertised and she should have voided it or just gave her the deal. If you go down the road to HyVee they have a bakery with amazing truffles and cookies that are just as good and cheaper, I'm all for supporting small local businesses but if you're gonna be rude then I'm not going to pay the high prices to support you. Updating this: I've had two separate friends visit this place on different occasions and both told me the service was surprisingly very rude. You are a small business, be nice to people! Super disappointed. My family has ordered Easter candy from Pease's for 40yrs. I was late ordering this year, the kids were disappointed I was late, but excited that it was on the way. I ordered on 3/25. On 4/4 I receive an email saying it had been shipped, but no tracking number. I give it the 5 business days UPS ground says it can take and call today to get my tracking number from Pease's. I check UPS, it says it was delivered 3/30. I call Pease's back, she promises to look into it. Meanwhile, I lose more time on the phone to UPS. It was delivered, but not to my address, to the wrong address that Pease's input. So my 3rd call to Pease's where she tells me it was the right address. So I point to the email receipt from Pease's that very clearly shows my correct address. 3 week old candy? (if there was even any left) Not very appealing. Let's see if they can get the refund right and I get to explain to some very disappointed children... Guess it's time to choose a new store. Huge fail. She said they were "transitioning" at the time. So, business point to be made, when "transitioning" quality check everything. Or you can lose lifelong customers to poor transition skills. read more

Sadly this downtown location closed in mid 2013. I will miss my occasional cashew clusters or strawberry & raspberry creams. But I am told that Pease's is still going strong at their main location! I decided to shop local when I was buying favors for a bridal shower. I went into Peases approximately 4 weeks in advance to see what I could come up with between $3 and $4 since I had a lot to buy. I talked with a clerk about buying truffles and putting them in a little more decorate box than what they usually use. She went back to ask her manager if that could be done and he agreed to it without any additional charges. I placed the order and said I would get back to them a few days before I needed them with how many I needed. I went into the shop on the Monday before I needed them to give them the final number and was told that they couldn't provide the boxes they had promised and that it would be $6.99 per box to use the more decorative boxes. At this point in time I had no other options. So much for buying local....next time I'll go to the internet. read more
