First let me say this: I have visited a lot of dentists in my lifetime. I had a perfectly great…read moredentist until my insurance changed and i had to find another one. I decided to give this place a try based on Google Reviews. I posted this review in Google and now i am posting my experience here in Yelp. I am puzzled to hear why so many people have said so many good things about this dentist. At first the staff was friendly and so was the dentist. Things took a turn for the worse as she started to clean my teeth. I experienced such a tremendous amount of paid when she started to check the depth of my gums that i told her to stop. No apology whatsoever from this dentist. Even after backing off she still hurts a lot while doing a simple and very routine procedure. Also i have no issues with my gums.. they did not bleed or anything. I usually do not write many reviews but when a dentist puts me in so much pain and does not apologize i cannot stay silent on this matter. Bottom line people is this: If you want to experience pain then go see her. If you are like me, which is a person who looks for a PAINLESS and friendly and also skilled dentist then seek elsewhere.

I was sent here after requesting a new dental clinic from the VA because my old one was more…read moreconcerned with fleecing the VA for any money they could get than actually what was best for me. Scheduled an appointment for the soonest available which was like two months out for an initial exam and then they called me because they had an earlier appointment, which I took. They did the assessment, sent their recommendations to the VA for approval and apparently didn't cancel the initial appointment so when they called to remind me of my appointment the following day, I assumed we were progressing with the treatment... nope. They performed a second "assessment" and said it was them just double checking that now that the VA approved the work, that it was still the best course of action. Sooooooo... I wasted my time on a BS appointment that they got paid for twice and it accomplished nothing. Nice. They did schedule me for a root canal at another place in town but failed to explain the specifics of how it would go down... In case you didn't know - and I certainly didn't because I'm not a dentist, nor an insurance agent - Step one is they send you to someone to do a root canal which requires one approval where they put on a temporary filling to protect the root canal for 2-3 weeks and step 2 is that you return to the first dentist to have the temporary filling removed and a crown put on to actually permanently protect it AND THAT REQUIRES A SECOND, SEPARATE APPROVAL. Which I did not know. And apparently, I DID NOT HAVE. The VA had approved the root canal, but the crown - being a separate procedure was a second request further down the stack apparently. That had ANY of this been explained, I never would have agreed to a root canal without having the crown approval because you can probably see where this is going... The temporary filling completely shattered and took half of the root canal with it at week 6 so I am now in SIGNIFICANTLY worse shape than when I originally went in. Which brings me to the last thing because all of the above can be chalked up to just miscommunications and such... I had an appointment scheduled sometime after my root canal while I was still waiting for something to be done to protect this unprotected tooth that is already on week 6 of a filling that was only supposed to last 2-3 weeks so I obviously was not in the mood to go in to have a filling fixed on the other side of my mouth - being the only side I can currently use anyway... So I double checked their policies. You must cancel before 24 hours or be charged a $25 cancellation fee. Right there in black and white. Screenshots and everything. So I called 30 hours in advance because part of me was still hoping that if I waited just a little longer, the approval would come through and they could change my filling appointment to the crown appointment. And several weeks later, I see that they have charged the VA a FIFTY DOLLAR cancellation fee for me cancelling my appointment. Not sure if they don't realize that the VA sends you a notice of things they pay on your behalf, but it REALLY grinds my gears that they didn't just charge but OVERCHARGED my insurance money they were not entitled too because they know Veteran's Affairs will pay. It's $50 to them, but to me, it's an indicator that they are more concerned with fleecing the VA than actually doing what I need.

I ended up going to going to Dr Gardener by default after Dr Reed moved back to California. They tried over charging me for my bridge by charging more than the insurance paid and then argued with me. Dr Gardener is about as friendly as rock. I needed a bridge and they make them in the office, and you come back that afternoon to have it put in. These crowns are rough and never feel clean even after brushing. I had a single crown done before I had the bridge put in and I went back 5 times to get it adjusted. Sadly, there was a cavity that was not taken care of when they did the crown, and I had to have it removed by my new dentist and a new crown. If I were you, I would avoid them at all cost.

When I arrived at Smile Fixer RVA, I was greeted by name and immediately led to the back for my appointment. They already had my records from my provider, and within minutes of sitting down they had taken x-rays, explained the process, and started a topical anesthetic. They offered additional anesthetic, but I declined based on their recommendation and explanation of the procedure and I experienced no pain at all throughout. They made my new crown in house, so I didn't have to deal with a temporary crown while waiting for another appointment. The whole process was quick, painless, and surprisingly pleasant. They know how to process insurance and they handle appointments very well (for rescheduling calling the office works better than online communication). Except for a long wait at one time while another patient was brought in and processed (not repeated) and a dental mistake by a trainee that was promptly remedied by Dr Shan I have had no other problems with this dentist over a period of many years. Dr Shan doesn't push for unnecessary dental work and she routinely takes x-rays to make proper diagnosis. She always explains what she observes and what she recommends with me. Dr Shan may not be a smooth talker but she is a competent and honest dentist and that is what a patient primarily needs. I recently left town and have to find a new dentist but dental businesses that are run as well as Glenside are hard to come by. I expect to find it hard to replace Glenside Dental.
