What a way to ruin the end of our Hawaii trip. Walking by the mall we came across this scam shop. The poster said $15 for pearls in oysters, we knew he wouldn't be giving that pearl in a pricey jewelry, but just a fine ring or neck piece would have suffice. The guy was like if you select a ring I will give to you in 5 min en all. Mind you this is prior to when we opened the oyster. When we did he started showing his true colors, he gave me the ring measurer to know my ring size & said, "ohh this ring size it will take 1-2 days to get mended & all. We decided to go for a neck piece instead. He showed some pieces worth $400. Yup. For a few minutes he went to other side of the shop took our pearl, we were just having a talk & the guy changed the pearl. It was a pink pearl that we got off the oyster, it was silver when he bought back, keep an eye on your pearl. The pearl had crack lines on it. My better half got into a brawl with the rude guy in the end, we just asked him to give the pearl, he started making faces. When we said we will right about this on review he said yup go ahead even I will write that " you guys did not want to spend any money & came here", Yeah, people come to Hawaii spending hundreds but cant spend $16. I absolutely love The Pearl Factory and the experience. My first time finding a pearl was almost 30 years ago, on our honeymoon. We just happen to to visit a place with a pearl factory about once every 5 years. My most recent experience was just a couple of weeks ago in Hawaii at the Pearl Factory by the Polynesian Cultural Center. MacKenzie that works there is the absolute best! My daughters and I enjoyed the experience. I just wanted for my pearl to have a really simple pendant clasp but daughter#1 ended up buying me the Ohana pendant as a birthday present. HIT OR MISS...Mixed review: Depends on who is there behind the counter. IF MAUREEN IS THERE absolutely! Go ahead and work with her. She's a great!!! but anyone else... skip this stand. We went 2 times. There was a sign for $17.99 for an oyster. The first time my son (11) had an amazing experience with the fan fare of opening the oyster. MAUREEN was AMAZING and kind to my son. Gave him a memory he talked about non-stop. When we were shown the options for setting the Pearl he wasn't a fan of the options they had there so we considered a Pearl cage, prices ranged from $50-250. So note that it the cost will be at least that much unless you buy a prepackaged oyster (see below for more on that) The second time we went, my son was was excited to share the experience with my daughter (16). It was our last day and we were headed to the airport but had time. We waited for them to open store, my daughter was so excited to share this experience with my son they had talked about it at breakfast. When the oysters were out out she started looking and the woman behind the counter (different from evening) immediately said to us if you're not planning on buying a setting that runs at least $60 you can't get an oyster. We don't make money otherwise so we stopped doing the oysters unless you pick a setting first... but I can sell you the packaged oyster for $25 and you open it at home. A couple of things to note. My daughter probably would have loved the Pearl cage options... and I understand that a business needs to consider its bottom line. We probably would have gotten a setting and Pearl. However, the tone in which it was said was annoyance like we were a burden to have been waiting there at opening. I asked since my daughter wanted to see the Pearl before committing to a setting if we bought the packaged Pearl could we open it there for the experience and she said no "company policy" it's not me my boss says no we can't. What she, her boss and company policy fail to realize is that this is the generation that will remember this and share with their friends for years to come. What could have been an amazing memory turned into a bitter end of our vacation. The thing is I remembered the oyster pearls from when I was in Hawaii 40 years ago and I had the experience so when my son did it- it was full circle. THIS IS A JEWELRY STAND... it's not about the oysters/pearls. They are not there to sell you the experience of finding a Pearl in an oyster. They are there to sell you jewelry. The oyster is for you to engage in buying a piece of jewelry that is pretty. Maybe overpriced but still pretty and enjoy the process. Only if they are in a good mood and want to be there. The reality is that everything in Hawaii is expensive and you know that going there and you plan for that. What you don't plan on, is the service while it isn't down right rude- it's definitely not polite or friendly. I purchased a pearl for $17.99. I was so excited, I really wanted to buy a pearl in Hawaii. I got a beautiful pink pearl, had it set in something that was expensive for me, but I was in Hawaii. The man put it in the pouch while I signed the receipt. He handed me an envelope and said everything was in it. I took his word for it. The bag never left my sight. You are greeted with the most energetic people working there, and they start telling you about what they do and offer. They tell you that your oyster is only $17, and you get to pick your oyster, and they open it up for you. But what they do next is kind of shady or over the top. They start listing their highest priced casings for your pearl, which was ridiculously overpriced. From a $17 pearl to a $900 gold casing with a gold necklace. I talked them down into a cheaper option because I explained that it was too much, but Chris, who was the manager that helped me, didn't even try to hide her disappointment. It was pretty off setting at that point and didn't even want continue doing business with her. She did lighten up right after I suggested her cheaper options or risk losing a customer. Overall a nice first time thing to do for someone important in your life but just be prepared for a little ride with the workers. read more

She is very knowledgeable and I know it might seem like a scam because you're looking to buy a $17.99 pearl but honestly the gold that the pearl factory carries is WORTH it. At first me and my family were drawn in by the sign out front saying, "pearls and oysters $14.99 each". We decided it would be fun to try out, and see what we got. After our oysters were opened he asked if we wanted any jewelry to hold it on, after we said no he turned around and drilled a hole in them to show us what it would look like on a necklace... The first necklace he showed us was over 200 dollars so we repeated that we didn't want anything to hold it and that we just wanted the pearl but he continued to push. I was always satisfied with them when i first found it in Hawaii and Pier 39 when i was younger, you got yo see the pearl come out of the meat of oyster. What happened to that these day? Can't really see it in the pendant cage. Daughter still had fun. They tried to upset the necklace and the cheapest came out to $100. The cheapest at the other place was $80. Definitely out of an 8 yr old price range so we bought a kit off Amazon for $9 and it included a necklace and another pearl! This really was just for the experience. The person said she picked a nice pearl of course and that it stood for love and wisdom. I couldn't find that description anywhere for a silver blue pearl which I was told was also rare and worth $100. Not sure about that either. All in all it was a fun experience as long as u don't get pushed into buying a nice setting that is way more expensive than the pearl you picked. Oh...and the oysters have been dead for a long time. They aren't fresh. They put them in water after taking them out of a bag with chemicals in it. They even sell the DIY kit for $50. Same as the one I got on Amazon for $9. read more

We've always passed this kiosk every time we've stayed at Hilton Hawaiian Village. There is a sign that states that "you pick oysters" are only $14.99. As my daughter excitedly picked out her precious pearl, the salespeople were following her excitement by saying "Aloha" followed by a gong ceremony. As nice as the sales lady was, she quickly tried to sell diamond studded turtle necklace for $349 for my daughter. My husband and I were stunned. I indicated that there was no way we were going to spend that much money for an elementary school child. Sales lady looked little bothered and asked me what my budget was. I felt very trapped as I promised my daughter that I would buy her something special on this trip and I didn't want to disappoint her. I finally settled on $160 rose gold necklace setting, which she absolutely loves. I know that sales people have to make a living but I would really appreciate some more open disclosure. My husband and I are not cheap consumers but we felt rather coerced and taken advantage of. Because I originally wanted it in a pendant but he would show me any affordable settings. The gold and white gold were all $200 and up. And even for me that is steep. The gimmick is that you get the pearl for $15.99, BUT what they don't tell you is that you have to buy their overpriced settings (the jewelry piece that attaches to the pearl), which is at least $50. They open the oyster in front of you, and you don't know what kind of pearl you're going to get. I saw someone with a black pearl that retails for $500, but I was a less lucky and got a pink pearl that retailed for $50. When selling their settings, they will aim high first. They tried to sell me $200+ setting with a diamond, which came from their "1" labeled box. I said no. Then they tried to sell me their "1b" box settings, which was only slightly cheaper. I finally purchased their "1c" box setting. It's called lava flow setting. It's simpler than the diamond decorated one, but love it! But I don't know if it was worth the price tag, though. Paid $80+ in total. In the end, they offered me a free pearl, but that's also another tourist trap to get you to buy another expensive setting. "Free"? What a lie! No thanks. They have good customer service, but they're quite pushy on trying to sell you their more expensive settings. It was fun opening the oyster and all, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Too overpriced in my opinion. TIP: Apparently the secret is that the uglier the oyster, the more expensive the pearl inside. read more
