The Nick is definitely not for everyone -- but it's absolutely an experience you'll never forget…read more After my friend (who was hosting us) passed out, my other friend and I decided to see more of Birmingham's nightlife. A friendly bartender at Up-Down Arcade Bar (another must-visit!) told us about this place, mentioning it's one of the few bars open 24 hours on the weekend. Naturally, curiosity won. From the jump, this place had character. There's a bouncer at the door, a makeshift elevated DJ booth to the right where you have to pay cash for a "membership." Don't worry -- there's an ATM conveniently behind the booth, ready to charge you a nice little convenience fee if you didn't bring cash. The membership lasts a year, but still, that was a first for me. Inside? Small. Crowded. Lively. And at 1 AM, there was a guy passed out in a chair right by the entrance -- with his dog roaming freely around the bar. I honestly couldn't make this up if I tried. The bartenders were solid -- fast, cool, and trying their best to keep up with the rush. There's a selection of local beers (pretty good ones too) and two pool tables... well, technically one, since they only had one cue ball. The pool sticks? Ancient relics. The bathroom? I'll spare you the visuals. Outside was much more breathable. There was a local guy named Walter -- from Georgia, of all places -- selling BBQ. Cool dude. The turkey wing was a little tough, but his attitude made up for it. Now, the real highlights? The people and the atmosphere. You've got folks eavesdropping on your conversations, tossing around racially backed jokes at me (that I politely corrected), a row of chain-smokers out front, and a woman openly asking for cigarettes or change that may have been homeless, but was definitely a crackhead and she so eloquently vocalized. It's a gritty and downright raw type of place, but somehow, it works. There wasn't any live music when we came, but I'm sure that's what makes this place shine more than it already does in its own unique way. I'll definitely be back for a performance night. Bottom line: Five stars because The Nick is exactly what it's supposed to be -- an unfiltered slice of Birmingham nightlife that refuses to apologize for being itself.

I went at 4:30'ish on a Tuesday for happy hour with some pals. Very slow time which was perfect for us. The bartender was very laid back. The customers seemed like regulars... familiar. Good drinks. The walls are super super busy. You can't look and not see something you didn't see before. I definitely recommend going for the experience if you've never been.

We came in on a Thursday night around 9pm and the place was pretty empty but the few who were there and the bartender were super nice and said they have a rather late crowd and they encouraged us to stay, so we did. It was a great little place. We played pool, enjoyed listening to the DJ play a great mix of old and new country and a lot of good ole rock 'n roll music. Everyone one in that bar was just a s nice as could be and we felt very welcomed and had a great time. I and one other girl were the only karaoke singers but that didn't matter. The place was cool and we had a great night. Thanks to all who worked Thursday night June 9, 2022 at the Hillside Karaoke Lounge. Michael Skelton

If you're looking for a mostly country music karaoke bar, this place is for you. The people are…read morefriendly, the drinks are very reasonably priced, and the owner doesn't let a lot of the drama that places like this are notorious for happen. This bar used to be a mainly older crowd, but it's changed a lot recently so there are a lot more younger people present, especially on Saturday nights. They have live cover bands occasionally, but it's mostly just karaoke. There is usually a very warm crowd that will clap and sing along even if you're not that good of a singer. I usually enjoy this place.

A hidden gem that hits every note just right…read more Walking into this place feels like stepping into the coolest Southern dream you never knew you had. The atmosphere blends old barn wood and Edison bulbs with modern art and chill beats--rustic meets trendy in the best way possible. It's got that Southern charm, but with a hipster twist that makes you want to stay way longer than planned. The service? Impeccable. Everyone behind the bar and on the floor was not only lightning-fast but genuinely friendly--like you've known them for years. No pretentious vibes, just good people who love what they do and do it well. Now let's talk beer. The selection is next level. From obscure small-batch craft brews to the classics done right, there's something for every kind of beer lover. IPAs, stouts, lagers--you name it, they've got it, and probably in a version you haven't tried before. The staff actually knows their stuff too, which makes exploring the menu even more fun. But what really seals the deal is the culture. This place oozes identity. Whether it's the local art on the walls, the vinyl playing in the background, or the diverse, effortlessly cool crowd, the vibe is 1000% dialed in. It's the kind of spot where creativity and community come together--and you can feel it. 10/10 would recommend. This isn't just a bar--it's a whole mood.
