Pretty little nursery, and the lady in the back was very helpful. I was all ready to love it. Then came the checkout fiasco. A snippy young woman rang me up, then gave me the wrong receipt. While they were trying to correct this I ended up being double charged. It took about twenty minutes and three tries to get this corrected. Then she had the audacity to tell me the whole mess was my fault! She snapped at me and at the other employee who was trying to help, then threw up her hands and stomped away. I don't think I have ever seen anyone turn a simple transaction into such a mess so quickly. Whoever this young woman is, she is losing this establishment customers. I called Paynes to see if they had a specific fertlizer and the person that answered could not stop talking to hear exactly what I was asking about. Instead after I asked her to listen to my question she hung up on me and said I was beign rude and I do not have to listen to you, you need to ask me to get permission to listen to me. Now I am on hold for a manager and I am sure will take her side of this issue and not help me. This business would not help me but now are being passive aggressive because I asked them to listen clearly not yelling to understand what I am asking for. Do not go here unless you want to be treated very badly and be on the phone with staff that have a 3 second attention span and do not understand the meaning of customer service. read more

Very very expensive. I just paid $20 for some superthrive. A small bottle that you can get anywhere else for 10 bucks.My fault, I Googled it while I was paying for it and I should have told him to void the sale but I didn't. I have bought plant food from them before and thought that it seemed expensive. I have ordered plants online that are just as healthy if not healthier than the ones that they have there and they're far less expensive. read more

I purchased an overly priced tree here - I really wanted to add to my garden as a specimen plant. I paid $193, as I exited I noticed a $7 charge for using my credit card. I questioned the cashier & was told the card company they now use charges this fee. I contested it, but was told they could not waive the fee. I asked for a refund. The cashier apologized & politely issued a refund. However, I notice today the $7 charge card fee was not refunded. I learned the charge company Payne's Nursery uses will not refund charge fees. Even though this transaction took place within 15 mins. - the fee is non-refundable. I FEEL RIPPED OFF & will not shop here again. I went down the road to another local nursery & found a comparable tree for $50 less. Farewell Payne's...........you have lost a loyal customer. Consumer beware and definitely shop around! read more

I have never been to a nursery where the employees have little knowledge and do not care that they don't know or care. I have gone in asking for a common item only to get the most blank look and no answer. Their plants are not in the best shape, due to a lack of proper care?? Last week I went in I asked for a well known root stimulant only to get "I never heard of it"...I went off in a loud voice because this is the stock answer..a man came up from another part of the store and showed me where the product in question was....I recommended the same product to a friend who today a week later went in to the same Paynes and asked for the same product only to get the same answer. She said she knew they had it and someone might want to do their job and find it...which they did. There is only one really good , knowledgeable and reliable nursery in Santa Fe and it is NOT Paynes. read more

Just watched an employee screaming at customers because a delivery truck was arriving. SCREAMING at people. I realize it was a big truck and a logistical challenge, but come on. Honestly Payne's, do your delivery scheduling better. Your delivery challenges are not your customers' problem. Seriously, screaming at the customers, never okay. I had a lilac bush to give as a present but later found out the nursery which Payne's procured the lilac bush uses insecticides which are harmful to the bees...I brought it back and left it...no one seemed concerned as to the product they were selling...I spoke to 2 very indifferent people this goes right to proper labeling whether is is food or plants life...we all need to know too bad I will not be going back read more

Was out of town, wanted a "Money Tree" send to a friend to commemorate the opening of his solo art show. WOW! See picture - it was $20 with a $30 delivery charge to Eldorado - which I was fine with because I expected to spend $20. I do not know about the insecticides which was mentioned din Jeanne's review, and this being an inside tree I hope it was good. Although I will ask Matt to clean the leaves. The bow and wrapping was SUCH a nice touch! and the card said exactly what I requested. YAY! Winner for me. He wants some fruit trees so we will check out the nursery when back in town. read more

I have been shocked that each time I call or go in to this nursery, the people who work there are not interested in kindness or customer service. Last mont we bought big bag of buffalo grass seed, expensive $65 but I wanted good seed. It did not grow. We have other buffalo grass and nothing tricky about it. My husband returned it, the staff was rude and the staff actually weighted the seed left in the bag and only refunded that. The problem was the seed did not sprout after a month with water. Well, they have some plants. But they look quite tired and dry. This nursery does have a good selection of fertilizers, pest killers, and such. It's hard to find assistance with questions or finding specific plants. I'm heartbroken that Santa Fe Greenhouses closed last fall. The nursery choices in Santa Fe now are very poor. read more

Paynes will get you situated, even if you don't know what the hell you're doing! Everything from annuals to indoor plants, hoses, pots and plant food. Stop by, bring a fat wallet or just feast your eyes. Super helpful staff and if you buy that Fiddle Leaf Ficus that's bigger than your Subaru, they can deliver it to your house for $15. I was lucky enough to run into their employee Viki P. and she answered and coached me on everything I needed to know. She was delightful! I bought 10 x's more than I planned because of it and left very happy with my purchases. Excellent customer service, I will definitely be back! read more

I live very close to this nursery (but actually there is another good nursery right around the corner and down the block on agua fria street) and that is what first attracted me to shop here. I found the employees to be super nice and 2 of them were quite knowledgeable and able to communicate their knowledge. Sometimes I have to go to the other place to buy what I need but for the most part, this one has had nearly everything when I needed it and at reasonable prices. I buy supplies, seldom buy plants but the few I have purchased from each of the two nurseries in my neighborhood have all thrived. And the advice I received from the Orchid expert lady at Payne's made all the difference! read more

People at the check out area are rude, lazy, and incompetent. They don't know the plants they sell, they don't know the prices, and they don't help with heavy loads of plants. One woman unloaded my entire wagon full of plants onto the counter to check me out. Then would not help me load the plants back in the wagon, let alone help me with the getting all the plants into my car. She stood there with a snotty look on her face as I struggled, along with three other employees who were not busy. They all just stood there. The owner of this business needs to change out the front desk staff. The people back in the plant area are always helpful. Why so much difference at the check out counters? read more

I usually go to Payne's for all my planting needs. They have become less and less helpful, polite and knowledgeable over the years. The people behind the counter knew absolutely nothing to help me with my problem solving involving square feet and soil. I give them 5 stars as the most UNHELPFUL business in Santa Fe! Not only that but they were out of lots of plants claiming Mothers Day wiped them out. I had to load all the heavy stuff myself into the car and the guy who was putting 10 bags of soil into the truck was not paying attention to the many bags that were ripped open and leaking. read more

I am very upset. I tried to buy locally, so I paid $90 for a maple tree. They told me they had a 100 day guarantee. I planted it and it started to sag, but I waited. After 2 months all the leaves died. So I called to get my 100 day guarantee. They will give half off on the next tree instead of replacing it! That is a rip off. Lowes prices are much lower and they give a 1 year guarantee! DON'T BUY FROM PAYNES!!! read more

There are 2 Payne's - one on Camino Alire and the other on St. Michaels. The former has lots of perennials, trees, shrubs and some annuals and the latter has annuals and some perennials and shrubs etc. The former is much bigger than the latter and the front staff can be annoying at times but the yard staff are always helpful. The latter Payne's has nice staff all around, especially when they know you. I don't have a problem with either store and have been happy to shop there. You want bad attitude? go down the road to Agua Fria nursery! yikes. The owner is just about the only pleasant person there. read more

TERRIBLE service, to say the least. Onboard at the Camino Alire store is a heavy-weight Hispanic woman, who is VERY rude and ill-tempered. Due to her rudeness, the store has lost my business forever.
