Do not rent from this airport they do not oblige to the reservation and are always out of cars.

I've had only good experiences with car rental companies, even when I returned a brand new car with a dent in the side [they let me off]. So I guess my number had to come up. I reserved with Payless via Priceline, where my quote was $344 for 9 days. A few days before our trip, I called Payless to make sure they had my reservation and a car for me; Yes, we have them both. Good so far. When we showed up at the rental desk tho, the attendant said he has no cars, but that one would surely show up in 30 mins. At 8pm, this sounded doubtful, so I surveyed the other rental cos there: Avis, Budget, Enterprise. All were too expensive so we chose to wait. A car did show up, and after the paperwork, we were off in our Sentra. Nine days later, we brot the car back. Return was efficient, and I was presented with my receipt, which I packed away for later. Next day I happened to read it and found I had been charged $465, not $344. So I filed claims online with Payless and Priceline. After a week, I also filed a claim with my credit card co., Citi. Today, a month later, I heard from Payless: I had *agreed* to the CDW insurance charge of $12 day, which resulted in the added amount. I NEVER pay the CDW, as that is covered by my car insurance, also my credit card. And I am SURE I told the attendant I did not want it. But the box got checked, and in my hubris, I signed the agreement without reading it. SOOOO - it appears there's been a gotcha. And I'm stuck. Lessons learned: 1. Do not book thru Priceline. Their price was NOT the lowest, and you don't know what company you've contracted with until you've booked. Seeing all these 1-STAR reviews, I don't think I'd book with Payless. 2. READ YOUR AGREEMENT before you sign. 3. In the future, READ REVIEWS before you buy. Payless has well earned their 1 STAR, which is still generous. read more

Why isn't there an option for ZERO stars!?Booked on website for $27 for 4 days! Took screen shots of website, had email confirmation from them. Upon arrival at the terminal was told it would be $66. (They conveniently did not have my confirmation number-LIE!) even though I showed him my phone with the proof of price and confirmation number. I told the dude I was returning the car at 5pm three days later. He left it as 11 am on the paperwork, which was the same time I had picked it up, so when I returned the car it was now $88. I will report this SCHLOCK company to the BBB, plan to write corporate and will be disputing the charge with my Visa company with all my proof documents! You get what you pay for! "PayLESS" you will not!" Enterprise has great service, I'm sorry I strayed from them. Live and learn! read more

Showed up, after searching for the counter (which is hidden between Budget and Avis counters and not marked). Nobody there. After 10 minutes Michael showed up and rented me a car that reeked of smoke. Never again. read more

Do not rent from this company. If you have an issue, it is impossible to get someone on the phone. I returned my car, and a month later started getting phone calls from someone in New York saying that my car had never been returned. When trying to contact the local office, they do not answer the phone - ever. And, the voicemail is full. In other words, no one wants to speak to you. You would be screwed if you had an emergency on the road. I will never rent from this company again. read more

Awful service and very dishonest. Booked a car for $65 got there and was forced to pay $150. Website said nothing at all about any additional required or possible charges. The guy at the counter was rude and would not give us a straight answer about anything. I will not rent from Payless in the future! read more

Rented a full size car late Friday night. Got the car and it smelled like smoke. I had already left the airport but tried to return it and they were closed. Went back Saturday morning and they stated they didn't have any full size cars available. However, my husband had a reservation for Saturday. We asked if we could swap cars out. Yes but price would be higher and they would not do a price adjustment. Highly disappointed. I now have to keep the smokey car. Never rent from them. Guess that's why they called payless. read more

The worst. No signs for return to Memphis airport. We had an early morning flight. No one around. Got locked into another car rental's section and couldn't get out. No drop box for keys. Had to leave our keys with the super nice Avis guy (the only person around) and pray they somehow give the keys to Payless. I would never rent from them again under any circumstances read more

Worst car experience of my life. the guy at the counter was either totally clueless on how to do his job or he was on drugs. after filling out paperwork on paper (god have their heard of the 21st century) they gave me keys to a car and they didn't know what spot in was in. told me to just push buttons until i found it. the return was even worse with a guy trying to pick up this girl and not even paying attention to the returns. he then directs me over to this women in a SUV on her phone with a serious attitude problem. then after that you get the experience of having to return back to the rental car counter again to pick up the receipt which was the same receipt they gave me when they rented me the car. total morans. will never rent from paymore and get less again. read more

When I arrived at the desk, the rep of the desk adjoining told me that the rep closed and went home and that she was asked to assist me. The other auto company put me in as a walk-in and did assist me, but the rate was 80 something dollars more. Not Acceptable. I'm still waiting for resolution from their "customer service" department...what a joke! read more

Sprang a surprise $350 hold on my account, since I used a VISA debit card, instead of a VISA credit card. Ruined my business trip, and left a very bad taste in my mouth. I would have been better off driving my own car. read more

Memphis Airport Payless rental has unscrupulous business practice, and it appears this is pretty standard for this company. It was one of the unfortunate experience I HAVE being involved in! I was charged more than $400 extra for a "Simple Vehicle Exchange. "Everyone I have spoken to "can't help me" and "only works there" -- and as far as customer service goes, they rely on a "discussion thread" over the internet to address any complaints or issues instead of a live person calling you to discuss your problems and try to fix any negative issues with my experience. Every person I talk to via the 800 number for the company tells me the same thing, that they cant' help, and that I have to wait for customer care to reply online to my complaint. It has been 22 days since I returned the rental and not one word or form of contact from the company. I have disputed the charges over what it was supposed to be with my credit card company. This rental agency is a complete scam and according to other threads online I have found, I am not the only person who has experienced these same problems! They do not care about their customers, complaints, and the staff .When trying to dispute a bill with my credit card company, Payless continued to lie and provide false information. Please do not do business with this company read more

Please be very careful when renting with Payless Car Rentals. The company is a rip off. I recently as of May 26th 2015 returned a rental car at the location in Memphis TN. They found two reservations in the system. I found a rate lower and immediately prepaid with Payless. I printed and highlighted confirmation number and presented it to the agent and pick up. They found a different reservation and checked it in. they completely ignored the lower rate that was already prepaid and charged me another price of a rental of $392.00. They do not honor prepaid rates. I spoke to five different agents with payless including the custimer service team at 1800 payless. It was horrible customer service and I was told no refund would be given. I prepaid for a card plus they charged again totally almost $500 for one week in a compact car. read more

I rented a car from the Memphis Airport for four days in February for a total cost of $78.44. I returned the car on time, with no damages and a full tank of gas. No one was at the return area so I had to go to the rental desk to return the keys. When I asked for a final receipt, I was told that "the system was down" and the charge would be the same as what appeared on my rental contract. After returning home, I discovered on my credit card statement that Payless had charged me $223.27, a $144.83 overcharge! I tried calling the Memphis location for an explanation but no one answered the phone. I called the national customer service number and was told someone would contact me. Didn't happen. I finally had my credit card company dispute the claims. I have yet to receive any type of explanation as to the additional charges. Now I am receiving threatening letters from "Donna Kent" in their Collections Department telling me to remit payment immediately. A phone number is provided with an extension but when you try to call the number, you are put into a constant circle of promotions for Dish Satellite, Direct TV, ADT, T-Mobile, Local Singles and State Farm Insurance. No matter what button you push, you get an ad and never a person. This company is a disgrace. I cannot believe they are still in business.Do not rent from them! read more

I rented a car with Payless at the Memphis airport on 10/14/15. I have to say that I disagree with the negative reviews here on Yelp. The customer service was fantastic. The lady who helped me at the counter, Portia, was kind, compassionate and very helpful. She went above and beyond to help me out after I was stranded. I had initially rented a vehicle, online, with a different company and when I got to the airport, the rental deal fell apart. I was very upset and Portia treated me like family and told me that she would help me get what I needed, no matter what it took. She was so wonderful, then walked me to my rental and I hugged her. She said that it does not take anything extra to be nice to people and I agree with her. She is a diamond in the rough. I know people have no qualms about writing negative reviews and if they are truly warranted then I have no problem with that. However, I believe that when someone does a wonderful job and goes out of their way to help, then that should be rewarded and shouted from the rooftops. I'm sorry that the other reviewers had a negative experience but my encounter with Payless care rental at the Memphis Tn airport was wonderful and they restored my faith in humanity. I'm grateful. My rental was clean and did not smell like smoke. I will definitely rent from them again in the future. read more

The first car I picked, a Kia Rio up from Payless MEM airport was a mess. Attendant did not walk around to check the car before I left with it (she said it wasn't necessary). I must confess I did not do a good job myself in my hurry. When I got home (6 mi away), I noticed that there were scratches on every major body section, there was a missing piece in the center console, through which you could touch the e-brake line, and the front bumper was cracked and hanging loosely. Phone customer service was no help. Submitted an online ticket immediately (5 days ago) and have not heard back. Returned the car the next morning and the staff were super helpful and got me on the road with a nice new Ford Fiesta. The first car I picked up was not safe and shouldn't have been on the road. Not sure how the multiple problems would have gone unnoticed by staff. 1* for the first car and 5* for the second. Going to think twice about using Payless again. read more

Reserved a car at Memphis Airport. Plane was delayed by 2 hours and when we finally got to the rental desk, was told that they had cancelled our reservation because we were late. Nothing on the reservation confirmation stating that they could do this after a specific period of time, and customer service at their 800 number said that it's nationwide policy to hold reserved vehicles until 11pm local time. Service desk lady said it's a "Memphis airport" policy (??????), waived a bunch of keys at us and said that she had lots of cars but none available for us! No apology, just turned around and continued her conversation about BBQ. Ended up renting from Avis - so much nicer and helpful, but almost double the cost. Customer service response to our complaint was stock denial of responsibility, and no explanation as to why they don't have a written cancellation policy on any reservation confirmation - especially important if you're renting at an airport where delays are very common. Terrible service, disrespectful behavior, and lack of any, or consistent, policy information will make me steer well clear of Payless in the future. read more
