More critically, he failed to inform me that I wasn't making estimated personal income tax payments, which led to a substantial tax bill for 2024--complete with penalties. Based on my experience with him, I expect he would say this wasn't his responsibility, but better communication could have prevented the issue. Additionally, his tax planning knowledge was not the right fit. For instance, he was unfamiliar with Solo 401(k) plans and only recommended SEP IRAs, which didn't align with my financial strategy. He also would push back against strategies like structuring payroll for my spouse, paying her the max required for a 401(k) contribution, and "netting out." Beyond these shortcomings, his overall responsiveness was mediocre to poor--not just during tax season but consistently throughout the year. Just as we expect doctors to have bedside manner, I believe a CPA should show a level of respect and care for their clients. Unfortunately, that was not my experience. Ultimately, I take responsibility for not holding Ron accountable sooner. Do not hire Kedra as your CPA or Janet (who works for her) as your bookkeeper. I paid this firm over $10,000 for bookkeeping and tax-related services for my business, and I ended up having to catch and correct basic errors myself. I found wrong expense categories, personal accounts listed as business assets, retirement-plan money left on the balance sheet after it had already left the business, incorrect 1099s, and a serious 2024 tax-basis issue in work the firm prepared. When I asked them to explain the numbers they used and provide support for their own work, they would not clearly answer or back it up. They had all the documentation from me they would need to not make constant careless mistakes. I want to be very clear about one thing, because I expect they may respond by saying I was asking them to do historical work outside their scope. That is not true. I repeatedly told them I was not asking them to reconstruct old years or do a historical forensic project or even to explain anything to me that was not just about why they used the numbers they did. I was asking them to explain and support numbers their own firm used in 2024 work they prepared for me. That is very different. I tried to resolve this calmly and directly. Instead, I was talked over, dismissed, and even hung up on rather than given clear answers. Kedra often seemed too scattered or too busy to keep important facts, documents, and prior conversations straight, which made everything more confusing. What bothered me most was the lack of accountability. I caught error after error, and when I asked about them, they would change the item (proving I was correct that they were wrong) and never explain why it had been done that way in the first place even when I would ask where they were getting their data to keep making so many mistakes. These were not obscure issues. They were basic bookkeeping and compliance items, and they had the records needed to do them correctly. Our goal was to find an accounting firm in Dallas that understood our growth mindset and was entrepreneur-friendly. We wanted help with tax preparation and to make sure we were bookkeeping with best practices. It took months and countless unanswered emails to get anywhere with Kelly CPA accountants after the first in person meeting. Our intake form and answers provided were even lost by their office at one point. After calling and being blatantly ignored multiple times by the accountant their first assigned us, they finally assigned a new accountant a few weeks before the deadline to file. I asked multiple times over email and calls to meet in person to review our information since the firm lost our data. He ignored my requests for the in person meeting just like the previous accountant who was assigned. I have major issues with the way they bill. Part of it is my fault - make sure if you use them to get their fees agreed to in writing. They claim they discussed this in person at our first meeting, but we don't have this written down nor do we remember for sure if it was agreed to many months ago. They don't include pricing in the engagement letter, which makes no sense to me. A simple google search shows this business charges 2-3x the average market price for tax returns - definitely worth knowing before signing an engagement letter. Finally, after requesting a sit-down with their bookkeepers to review best practices and being ignored on that, it was clear they weren't a firm that truly cares about supporting small businesses. They have done a great job with their marketing and the millennial friendly office space - but these things definitely duped me.
