I am a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and have been training for about 14 years. If you know…read moreanything about BJJ then you will understand if I say I have trained with the very best in the world- people like Cyborg, Bernardo Faria, Rodrigo Freitas, Marcelo Garcia. Formerly, I was with Alliance, known for being the most winning BJJ competition academy of all time. In jiu-jitsu, you talk about your "lineage" because it helps authenticate your training, dedication, and understanding of the "gentle art". My lineage is Jigoro Kano (the inventor of the sport of judo)- Mitsuo Maeda - Helio Gracie - Rolles Gracie - Romero "Jacare" Cavalcante - Alexandre "Gigi" Paiva - Mitch Coats - me. All of this is to say that I fall into the category of having "forgotten more about jiu-jitsu than most people have ever known." When I moved to Southern Maryland, I was dismayed to find that the only two legitimate BJJ schools in the area (Calvert MMA in Sunderland and Royal Martial Arts in Waldorf) were both a 45 minute drive from my home in California- just too far for daily training. Note that when I say legitimate, I know what I'm talking about. In any case, when Jim Thrift, the owner of Calvert MMA, opened Lineage here in California, MD, I was delighted. Jim has been training under the Gracie family since they burst onto the scene in the US in the 90's. He's like a walking encyclopedia of BJJ. He's also a super nice guy and a straight shooter. Thus, I was honored when he invited me to step up to the plate as a part-time instructor, something I had done before with Alliance. This put me in a very rarefied group, as Jim and the other instructors are very much the real deal- incredibly knowledgeable and talented martial artists. I read a review on here saying the instructors had huge egos, didn't know what they were talking about, and didn't put any effort into teaching. I find this review to be written by someone who clearly has no idea what they are talking about, and has an axe to grind. I'm assuming the latter is because they decided to take up jiu-jitsu and then decided to back out a couple of months later. Whatever the reason, I take exception to anyone saying that neither the other instructors nor myself know what we are talking about. I may not be a national or world champion like so many of my friends and former training partners, but I can unequivocally say that the instruction and atmosphere at this school are world-class. Jim runs a clean and nurturing school with a true family atmosphere. Anyone who trains here can rest assured that they: 1. Will never have to worry about picking up some kind of nasty infection from rolling on dirty mats, like always seems to happen at poorly run schools; 2. Will never encounter meathead types who just want to bang heads and couldn't give a hoot about technique; 3. Will be challenged to better themselves in a safe atmosphere; 4. Most importantly, will learn world class jiu-jitsu, right from the source. What more can I say? Highly recommended.

Update: The owner continues to change his reply and message me privately. It's wild that he doesn't…read morerealize people are entitled to leave reviews based off of whatever experience they have. Update: the guy who is apparently a professional decided to dox my full name and my location while also making assumptions and stating information that is false. I will continue to say that the initial interaction with the place of business was poor. The information on the website at the time of my visit was not correct, the information received on the phone was not correct. Secondhand information after the fact was provided. From there the already poorly handled interaction was handled even worse. Read this guys replies of my review and all other negative reviews. Rather than have accountability to the consumer he pushes blame off to our reviews based off of opinions and experiences are wrong. I cant even tell you how many times he changed his reply to my review but I can tell you I got a notification 5 times yesterday alone.

I was a member of Method boxing for a long time. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to attend…read moreclasses recently due to a demanding new job. However, when I was attending it felt like home. As a person who loves physical activity, Method can't be beaten! I enjoyed the periods of instruction and also enjoyed being part of a gym family. Shortly after I joined, my young son and daughter also started attending classes. I was impressed how Stu took the time with my kids and gave them individual attention and truly worked with them, they were not one of many. Stu and MJ also catered to my needs of a 7:30am class. I was the only student, however due to my work schedule that was the only time I could attend and they were extremely accommodating (12 months accommodating of one student). I couldn't believe the level of individual attention I received. I received more services than I signed up and paid for...I got meal prep advice, body compositions taken, goals assessed, basically a personal trainer. But not a gym personal trainer, more along the lines of a life coach/gym trainer. I'd highly recommend Method Boxing to anyone. This gym is suited for beginner to expert level boxers, kick-boxers and Jiu Jitsu , the fact that my children used to frequent the gym is a testament to that. After soccer season, my children and I are trying to work Method back into our schedules.

Professional instruction delivered in an assertive, yet friendly way. I will be back!read more
