We stayed here to celebrate my mom's 70th birthday as an extended family and stayed in the (glamping) tents. Overall, we had a good time, but don't think that we would go back.
First, the good things:
- Great accommodations: Tents are comfortable, well appointed and generally situated in the woods near a stream or river
- Camp dinner: each of the tent communities has ~6 tents that each accommodate 2-5 people which make each of the areas quite intimate but also have a few other people around. Each camp area has it's own pavilion / common area where you can have breakfast and dinner with it's own chef. Each of the camp dinners were excellent - food was prepared perfectly with a surf and turf option served family style each night. The "butlers" are all "certified smoreologists" which was actually warranted - the smores were amazing and bacon-wrapped marshmallows dipped in bourbon blew my mind.
- Staff were overwhelmingly very helpful once we were on site. Each camp community has a "butler" that helps with any requests - always super friendly and accommodating. The other highlight were our guides for shooting and horseback riding in particular. Our horseback guides did a great job with a range of ability levels - from accommodating my skittish mom on a horse, my 6 year old who loved it and some in the group with more experience and wanted to veer off trail.
Then the not good things:
- Transportation (and all the WAITING): Staying in the tented camps, you are limited to the resort shuttles to get around the absolutely massive property. We happened to drive to the resort and were REQUIRED to leave our car a drive away from the tented camps. We were told that they by having our car in the parking area near the camps it would "disrupt the camping experience" - however, I failed to understand how having vans come and go constantly made it better? You can order transportation ahead of time through the app, but it took up so much time to be planful about requesting transportation and/or waiting for the transportation to arrive and the buffer time required for activities. If you stay in the log homes, then you are given a Lexus to drive around the property so you don't have this (major) annoyance and loss of freedom. As a result, it took us an hour from
- Going to the "island" was a real highlight with the ability to do a bunch of lake activities (wakeboarding, tubing, wave runners, paddle boarding, water trampoline), but also one of the most expensive activities that we did. All of our other activities were scheduled for a set time (i.e. 10am-2pm) and you were picked up 30 min in advance. However, for the island, we were picked up at 10am and didn't actually get to the island until ~10:30 and then were told to pack-up to head back by 1:30pm. Losing out on 25% of the time we thought we would have wasn't a good surprise. This also caused us to WAIT an extra 30-45 min for transportation since this was not communicated to us in advance.
- The one showcase dinner that we attended was supposed to be at a river lodge but was relocated to the saddle club late in the afternoon (however apparently staff knew for at least a week). When we arrived for dinner ~6:15 all of the outdoor tables were taken and we were told we could sit inside (note: all of the food, music and activities were outside). We eventually asked for a table to be moved outside which they reluctantly did, but for the price tag it seemed counterintuitive why people would want to sit inside in the summer.
There were a few other annoyances:
- It's all inclusive meals, but not inclusive (of any) activities. There are a couple spots to potentially swim in the (snow fed) river and some trails (although the map is highly unreliable), but notably no pool for kids. As another reviewer noted, plan on ~$100 per person per hour for activities.
- The website says dogs are allowed, however dogs are NOT allowed in the tented camps
- I found it odd to put the high ropes course right next to a go-kart track, so instead of feeling like you are lost among the trees you are listening to the hum of go karts go round and round.
- The food was generally fantastic, but desserts were far less impressive. They do not have a pastry chef on site, but think this would be worthwhile!
- The concierge staff that I reached out to ahead of our stay were not at all helpful. Without going into a lot of detail, it was clear they didn't read my email and therefore did not answer my question and it required multiple follow-ups to answer simple questions. Also, when asked if it was possible to get a dessert or cake with some candles in it for one night of our stay they told me it would be $75+ to accommodate. When I showed up on site, they were happy to help and did provide a dessert to celebrate the birthday.
We happen to spend a lot of time in Montana which is a beautiful state. This experience just didn't add up to be a good value. read more
