I called 31 min before closing and place my order. I was 4 min away. Staff was friendly and helpful. Food is freshly made in the kitchen and kitchen is visible. It's a clean small location. It's best you order your food and take it to go. When I went Saturday I believed I was over charged on my meal. I had purchased a fish and shrimp meal and my total had came up to $20.12. I went Sunday afternoon and got a Tilapia meal with 2 sides which came with corn bread for $16.31. Im upset for the disloyal service I was provided by staff. But its my fault because I should of ask for my receipt on Saturday. Overall they food is delicious and season well. Update: This place DOES NOT follow directions and needs to take fries "chips" off the menu if this is the quality they serve. First and foremost I saw that Mac and cheese and fries cost the same so idk what was wrong with me asking for them to be swapped out. I visited Paula's yesterday and was extremely disappointed in the quality of the service and the food. First of all, the wait time to even order was unreasonably long. They were practicing social distancing which is great, but seemed unable to keep up with the amount of orders they were getting. A line formed outside and it took almost 45 minutes to get in and place my order. Once inside the restaurant, the women at the counter didn't even acknowledge me. It took almost 5 minutes (probably more) for them to realize I was there. When I finally received my order, it was under seasoned, the portions were small, and the macaroni salad was missing from the order. No condiments were provided. Just dry ass fish and oily unseasoned fries. Horrible!! I am not going to give this restaurant another chance to disappoint me. Paula's will no longer be getting mine or my family's business. Omar Bailey has let this place dwindle excessively. During the pandemic as most places prices went up. If you want a turkey wing in addition to your $18 rib meal then you'll have to pay an additional $4. That's the flat piece with the non meat part attached just to be visually explicit. Ordered for the first via uber eats and I was truly satisfied with the portion and the taste of the food. I had ordered some cake slices but they was out. I ordered all shrimp which was jumbo and fried to perfection, Along with the all wings. A side of candied yams and Mac and cheese. All delicious I was happy with my order. The greens need more seasoning or something ..to me they were blandish. I came here a few months ago because of a deal on Groupon. The food was so dang good. I had mac and cheese, candied yams and bbq chicken. My mom had the same except she had baked chicken instead. Both kinds of chicken was moist . The yams were good. The mac and cheese was great. The ice tea is humongous! It's like 2 large drinks in 1. Staff: Very friendly and on point. I've driven past this place time and time again.... Today something told me to stop and see what it had to offer... With a smile on my face and am happy to report the food is quite good.. I ordered the Beef Ribs with Mac and Cheese and Cabbage, I also ordered baked chicken with greens and yams.. All was good. Just needed a little salt but over all the flavors were spot on. Ribs were nice and tender and still juicy. The corn bread was moist and good.. I will be stopping in more often to check out other things on the menu. This is the second time that I've ordered from this establishment. The first time there were issues with my order but I decided to give them another chance. Tonight I ordered two fish sandwiches, a Pepsi, and a half and half. The delivery person called to say that he had arrived with the food but that he didn't have the half and half. He offered to go back to get it. I told him to bring the order up and to forget about the half and half. I figured that this would omission would cost him the tip that I would've given him. He then called again to say that the food needed to picked up downstairs. When my son returned with the food I discovered that were no napkins and condiments. They never open on time. They hardly ever answer the phone. They have a big menu, but most things are never there when you get there. The email that is provided on the menu is fake. The food taste like the owner went out of town for the weekend and let his brother manage it while he was away... but the brother is secretly sleeping with the owners wife and is trying to sabotage his business. The fried whiting portions are humongous!!! I am hardly ever in the Wakefield section of the Bronx, but had to meet a friend in the area. I walked in to a clean, small area with a large flat-screen tv, a short counter with a few high back stools, to allow a quick eat-in, but most take it to go or my option, sit in your car and eat while the food is still piping hot...Anyway back to my entry. I was greeted by a steam table displaying several food choices and also by a fairly friendly lady behind the counter. Ain't no shame in my game, so I told the fairly friendly lady that it was my first time here and would need a minute to decide. She explained the menu, which was the basic, one protein plus two sides. I asked her to show me the proteins in the steam table and that's all she wrote. I damn near order everything! I ended up asking her if she could create a container of 1 spare rib, which she put in 3 plus 1 gigantic turkey wing, which she put in 2 and a separate container for my main of fried whiting plus sides of mac and cheese and candied yams. I spent a little under $20 incl tax and had enough for two, plus leftovers. The whiting was fried to order, fresh, crisp and seasoned well and were at least 6 large pieces, not halves of wholes but 6 whole filets. NEVER ordering from this place AGAIN. Placed an order through Eat24 at 5:33pm. It's now 7:20pm and the food is just getting here. Called them at 6:43pm and was told "it's on it's way". Mind you the place is 5 minutes away by car. Ordered the chicken wings (with a side of blue cheese) and fries and the carrot cake. Opened the bag there was no blue cheese. Opened the food container and there's water on the lid (Seemed as though the food was sweating). The wings are cold and the fries are soggy. The carrot cake container was also wet on the inside. I went here based on all the awesome reviews I saw on yelp, but I'm thinking that all of those people have never had actual soul food. The whiting, collard greens, and mac and cheese weren't seasoned very well. The shrimp was ok, the corn was bland, I didn't even know corn COULD be bland, but the corn bread was good, and so was the banana pudding. I tried Paula's Soul Café about a week ago because I read a lot about it from the Yelp reviews. I went to the restaurant (hard to find at first) but I found it on the side of 233rd Street. I made two orders one of Catfish and Shrimp (side order of Mac and Cheese with Collard Greens), the second order is Fried Chicken and Shrimp (same sides) Catfish (needed more seasoning) Shrimp (dah bomb with hot sauce) Mac and Cheese (very good, needs a tad bit of pepper) Collard Greens (very delicious) Candy Yams (delicious) Cornbread (soft delicious and very good) The food was very good. I came back again but this time ordered from grubhub. It is good to know that a soul food place is nearby. But I still have a favorite one but this is a good Soul food spot in the Bronx But its best to take it out and eat, you cant really eat it there. read more

Ok so I HATE writing a bad review especially if it's for an African American business (because I always make an extra effort to support) but I am fed up now! I've been going to Paula's for the last couple of years now and I think I'm officially done! The food is good most times BUT the SERVICE IS ATROCIOUS! 99% of the time they don't answer the phone, when you do get through they are ALWAYS rude, and most of the time they forget to put items you ordered and paid for in the bag. What bothers me the most is when you place an order over the phone (If they answer)or in person there is such an attitude. It's as if I'm asking for free food. The behavior continues because customers aren't complaining/reporting this on sites like Yelp AND we keep going back. The continued bad service and etiquette to the very people that keep you in business is so uncalled for. Just like how you worked very hard to open that business and get paid, I worked very hard for my money that you as a business WANTS/NEEDS! I feel like only in African American communities businesses feel like they can treat customers any way they want without consequences! If Paula's was in a DIFFERENT neighborhood (you know what I mean) giving the same terrible service the people of that neighborhood would come together and either boycott Paula's or sign a petition to get it shutdown. I'm not calling for that BUT c'mon now. Better service goes a long way. I went there today to pick up my order that I called in. When I was on the phone with the woman that took my order she sounded sooooo happy to be there (totally being sarcastic)and barely didn't want to tell me how long my order would take to be prepared. I get home and my food was cold (It ONLY takes me 5 minutes to drive there) , the food was nasty and the piece of corn bread was burnt and uncooked (pictures attached). This is not the first time this has happened either. I blame myself for continuing to go and support a business that doesnt give a damn about its customers. It stops today!!!! All right, listen. When Paula's is on, they are ON. Like, 5 stars ON. The fried wings are amazing, the whiting sandwich is good, potato salad is the perfect accompaniment to everything, yams are good, collards are tasty, corn bread is soft and sweet and yummy...ugh. They can be ON. The reason for this rating is that they are not consistent! WHY, Paula, WHY!? Out of the probably 5 or so times that I've ordered from them, my first order was one of the best soul food meals I've had in ages....but the other 4 times were a mixture of "Hm this is pretty good but it's not the same" to "Ok, this chicken has literally no salt on it and is soggy and lukewarm. Why did they forget the yams and which new helper made this dry-a** cornbread?" After my first try (amazing!), I tried 4 more times to recreate that great first meal and failed...so I don't know if I'll be trying again. Oh, and I've gotten delivery 3 times, and it takes minimum 1-1.5 hours and the delivery guy NEVER GETS OUT OF HIS CAR and there's always parking on my street! Is this a Bronx thing?? He doesn't even try to pretend like he's getting out of his car - he sits there waiting for me to come down to get the food and passes me the always lukewarm food thru the driver's side window.
