Paul is very thorough. He observed the instrument for several minutes, touching to look for scratched and cracks. He performed the maintenance thoroughly and did not try to upsell me un nicer replacement parts. The service was prompt and it's easy to park in front of the workshop (a big deal for larger string instruments). read more

Paul was knowledgeable and helpful. He gave some options for my violin tune up - giving suggestions for things I could do today or down the road. I did not feel pressured to do everything at once. It was the total opposite experience of what people often say when they "go to get their tire fixed" and the mechanic tells them 10 other things that are wrong. I was scammed on Craigslist and got a shoddy cello! What's a girl to do??? Thank goodness for Paul -- he repaired my cello the same day I brought it in! He also gave me a great lesson in cello anatomy (I'm a newbie and kind of clueless about such things). He was very friendly and knowledgeable and I felt very comfortable in his studio. My cheap cello sounds infinitely better now that Paul worked his magic on it! He was recommended to me by the Old Town School of Folk Music. He does construction, sales, rentals, and repairs for violas, violins, cellos and double basses. I brought my violin to Paul with a collapsed bridge and a vague knowledge that other things were wrong because it felt harder to play than other violins...I just attributed it to other violins being more expensive (like those of my teachers or more serious players). However, my violin still wasn't bad, and Paul not only fixed my bridge, he gave me an honest evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of my violin and which ones are most important to fix now and later, and why. After picking up my violin (which he had ready on time and everything as promised), I played it the day after and it did indeed sound and feel noticeably better. It honestly felt so good to play I didn't want to stop - which is not something I've said often as an owner of this violin for the past four or five years. He also gave me extra advice about strings and how to take care of my violin that he did not need to take the time to do, but he did anyway, and was overall friendly on top of all of it.
