Okay, so this place is FABULOUS! The owner, Tom, and his teammate (it's a small operation I think just 2 of them-- apologies for not remembering your co-worker's name, Tom!) are both SO lovely! They do amazing quality work for a stupid great price and turnaround times are way faster than any place I've taken my guitars to in the past (I'm talking in over a decade when I say "in the past".) They found an issue with my axe and called me right away to walk me through what they were noticing, the source of the issue, how it would impact performance if I was playing plugged in vs unplugged, and then walked me through pricing on the various options depending on how I used it. (Ex. "There's a slight buzz on the X string due to your old pickups...the buzz only happens on the X string when you're unplugged... a) if you plan on mostly using it plugged in, you really don't need to spend the extra money since it would be a non-issue; b) if you plan to play unplugged, and the buzz kills ya, we can fix it for ya for (*insert nominal additional fee here*-- seriously, folks, not a lot of cash at all...I think it was just the cost of the part itself)..... Also, it's worth noting, some folks might not mind the buzz because it's not an actual "problem/defect" perse, but more something that happens with this kind/model guitar which could be seen as just adding to the unique sound of this specific one makes... it really is subjective. If you wanna wait on the fix, we can have you test it in the shop when you pick it up, take it home for a bit to see how you feel about it. If you decide you don't like it, just bring it back and we'll get you sorted." I LOVED this interaction for SO many reasons: 1. He shot me straight: identified the (possible) "issue"; 2. Realized that the "issue" was subjective and depending on preference may actually be a non-issue; 3. Gave me OPTIONS on what could be done; 4. Gave me OPTIONS of pricing (do nothing/do a lil' something/ do all the things); 5. Respected originally quoted pricing and me/ customers enough to let ME decide what needed to happen BEFORE doing it so that there was no surprise up-charges; 6. They were really sweet to my dog while I tested the "issue" out when I picked it up (it's a small shop, so I assume only WELL BEHAVED/chill pups will also have the opportunity to report the same-- and yes, I called and asked permission BEFORE rolling up with my dog in tow). TLDR: 1. These guys are great/lovely humans. 2. They're KNOWLEDGEABLE. 3. Your axe is in GREAT hands with them. 4. The PRICING is FABULOUS . 5. Turnaround times are FAST considering what a small operation they are AND compared to bigger operations I've gone to over the last decade. 6. NO SURPRISE UPCHARGES. 7. I am an intermediate guitar player that likes to play along with my favorite songs. However after having one of my guitars setup by Rebound, I immediately felt a difference when I played it. The comfort and ease of play made me want to play newer more difficult things. I've subsequently had my other two guitars setup along with some minor repairs. Sometimes I tend to get long-winded when I commit to writing a Yelp review, so I'm going to try to keep it short and to the point. I royally messed up my guitar trying to set up the intonation and the bridge myself and needed to get it quickly (and affordably) fixed up, so I called a guitar shop (which shall go unnamed) in the Humboldt Park/Logan Square area for a quote. $60 dollars for restring, intonation, neck adjustment, etc. $30 extra for the rush job, plus the cost of strings. You don't have to be a master guitarist to know that's an outrageous price. On a mission for instrumental justice, I called the Shake Shop and met Tom. $45 for everything, strings included. He was able to get my guitar back up to snuff in just over an hour. It plays beautifully and it didn't break the bank to get it there. Not only was he a professional, he was friendly and fully interested in me and my experience. My thanks to Tom and crew. I'll go out of my way to come back. Shake Shop! My guitar was sounding worse than ever before, and it needed to be fixed ASAP! I called this shop for a free estimate. Tom welcomed me to his shop; he explained that there wasn't anything really wrong with my guitar. It was just a cheap and crappy humbucker. He suggested replacing the crappy humbucker for a new one. I wasn't looking to purchase a new one (since I'm not an active guitarist, anymore) so he then offered to replace it with a use one. Tom said he would have it ready in a couple of days, but when I told him that I'm nowhere near from the neighborhood. He rearranged his schedule and had my guitar ready in a couple of hours. Now my guitar sounds way much better. In addition, I forgot to mention about a missing spring in one of the screws from the bridge. Tom was generous enough and installed that missing spring and fixing the loose screw. Tom is very professional, his rates are reasonable. His shop is the place to go. read more

Woke up to find my JazzMaster grinding the A string against the fretboard. Attempted to fix the action myself but instead found all of my strings, again, against the fretboard. Took my guitar to the Shake Shop and Tom fixed it within 3 days. It sounds great and plays better than before. Additionally, the repair comes with three months of free tune-ups which is helpful in case you beat the living hell out of your instrument. There is also a revolving selection of musical equipment for sale most notably a tabla, organ, synthesizer, hand-made miniature amplifiers, and a variety of vinyl. It's pretty cool to have this store so close to my apartment. read more

The Shake Shop caters to Logan Square's many bands and musicians, principally offering the basics of instrument repair and accessories (strings, drumsticks, et al). They also sell used guitars and amps, custom-built mini-amps, records, CDs, and other stuff that musicians find interesting. On my visit, I met the proprietor, Tom, who seemed to be a terrific guy and was glad to talk. If they don't seem to have what you're looking for, ask--they didn't have guitar strings for acoustic 12-strings on display, but Tom fetched 'em from the back room, and at a reasonable price. I can't speak to their guitar repairs, but Tom worked for a bass guitar manufacturer for many years and I'm guessing he knows what he's doing. I believe they're also offering guitar lessons. As a fairly new business (they opened in the fall of 2010) they don't have the selection that the huge stores closer to the lake have, but the prospect of being able to buy basics within walking distance of my house makes me very happy. read more

I came in based on a friend's recommendation and couldn't have been happier with the service and staff at Shake Shop. He setup my #1 electric, and the end result is better than it's ever played. I also took in an instrument that was passed down to be by a family member, which has probably never been set up. I love this joint. Every time I walk into Shake Shop I feel comfortable and almost want to sit on the couch and crack a beer open. The merchandise is quirky and eclectic. Lots of local art and hand-made items adorn the walls and shelves. There's a great bin of dollar records that I've found some sweet soul in, and I found a great new copy of a Modern Lovers record that I wanted in the newer record bin at an amazing price. I had a RAT pedal that needed fixing and Tom (the owner of the shop) gave me a great deal and fixed it right up. He was prompt and fair with the pricing and service. I ALSO had problems with the action and one of the humdingers on my old fender bullet guitar, and he made it all better. Amazing price! After having an amp repaired at another shop (previous to Shake Shop's opening) I must say I was VERY happy with the attitude and price at Shake Shop. The OTHER shop that shall go un-named was, well, SNOTTY and EXPENSIVE. BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE. Yup, I got a sweet little practice amp that he had in the shop used for a steal. It was obvious that Shake Shop could've jacked up the price on this little guy but I felt like I truly got a better deal than I could've gotten anywhere in the city. I love Shake Shop. I knocked over my friend's guitar and the headstock split down the middle. I called a bunch of repair shops and all of them had high quotes, said it couldn't be fixed at all, or wouldn't even give me a ballpark over the phone...all except for Tom. In addition, 99% of the other guys I spoke with were real jerkweeds, but Tom sounded like a nice guy. Obviously, I went with Tom.
