    Agile 7-string

This place is usually pretty cool and I liked the vibe every time I've come in so I brought in a 7 string which is not a standard type of guitar and asked for a general set-up + to adjust the bridge. The employee looked at me with a condescending gaze and acted like he knows my skill level, so that gave me a sign that he probably has a poor understanding of music and instruments, but I came here to try the service out: I've never been charged $110 for a set-up and been so disappointed... When I picked it up 2 weeks later the intonation was way worse than when I dropped it off it was almost like they messed it up out of spite, although the bridge was adjusted. It was so bad I didn't even wanna return for repairs for fear they would charge more. For the price of $110 there would commonly be more care and love given to the instruments as a general set-up usually costs $40-70 via places like Guitar Center, or Sam ash or even Music Gallery in Highwood which has truly experienced experts who would not return an instrument in such a sad condition. The extended range of a 7-string is favorable in jazz and jazz fusion - Ron Eschete, Yamandu Costa, Howard Alden, Tosin Abasi, Fredrik Thordendal, Marten Hagstrom, the list goes on. Returning an instrument like this is dishonorable for a musician. I feel like that should be an unspoken given.

Buying Jon a professional level guitar!…read more What an amazing experience. In this day of mass manufactured instruments, it is a rare and wonderful site to see someone who actually hand crafts guitars. Mr Brune has been doing this for many years - he proudly displays the first guitar he made as a teenager out of his parents dining room table... The space is really interesting - you walk into a hallway where he has his office. Off to the left is the display room. He has four or five display cases, each one with guitars of a different price range. He carries not only ones made by his hand, but those of other Luthiers from around the world. Each guitar he carries he knows the story and history. While my son was trying various guitars, he gave us a tour of his work shop. We walked through a door into the back and entered a tight space where he had guitars stacked up for repair and a few machines. This in and of itself was impressive. We said it was a cool workshop and he laughed and said this was not his workshop. We went through another door into an enormous space filled with lots of different types of wood and equipment. There were guitars in various stages of being built or repair. His son, a violin maker, shared the shop for some of his work. This was an incredible experience for anyone who has an interest in music.

He recommended a mix of strings which made the guitar sound with clarity and depth. He also constructs his own guitars ranging from classical to flamenco. I have seen other types of guitars. He can also do work on your guitar if it has problems. Most classical/flamenco guitars have been manufactured in China or Japan. Even the spanish guitar companies like Cordoba famous with the gypsy kings and Manuel Rodrigues Spanish guitars outsourced their manufacturing to places like China. Yamaha flamenco guitars have their manufacturing base out in japan. There are luthiers (guitar craftsmen) that make real handmade guitars that sound so much better. RE Brune is one of those craftsman that can give you a real handmade guitar and not those guitar center chinese made ones. If you are a serious musician, consider RE Brune as a luthier for your new guitar.

I got here 15 minutes before they closed on a Saturday, but never felt rushed. Bea showed me the new mouthpiece they have but also asked if I was interested in used. (That grosses me out a bit, but I was assured they're sanitzed). I looked through the mouthpiece drawer and actually saw 2 Larry Combs mouthpieces. That's what I played on the entire time I played clarinet as a kid/teen, and what I originally wanted to buy (only to find out they stopped making them years ago, so they're hard to find). I have no idea if I had an LC1 or LC3 back then, but they had both in the shop. I didn't want to try it out that day since I had literally never touched a clarinet in 23 years and didn't want my first time trying it to be where other people could hear me (lol), plus it was closing time. But I came back on Monday and was able to go down to their practice room and try out both mouthpieces, and ended up buying one for $50. Not too shabby. Both the guy (I didn't catch his name) who got me set up in the practice room and Bea (who helped me check out afterward) were super nice. Bea was a gem helping me both times. PM Woodwind also has my old ligature for sale so I may go back to buy one once I decide if I want to actually keep this hobby going long-term. They also have reeds for comparable prices to Amazon, and I'd rather support them than Bezos, so I'll happily come back here once I figure out what strength reed I need these days.

Twice I took my horn in, and I never seemed to get even a fair level of customer service that I felt I should. I certainly am not a professional player which maybe would put me in front of the line, but commitments made were never met. I continually had to call it was one delay after another. I then years later was interested in a used horn they had on their website. $4,500+ horn. I received a quick response to my email interest, but EVERYTHING then has to go through Paul and he's TERRIBLE with any attempt at a timely response. He's ALWAYS going to give me a call TOMORROW. The employees there are careful in what they say, but it's obvious during my conversations with several of them, that they, too, are frustrated with Paul's lack of timely attention. I waited 2 months for answers to simple questions and finally gave up. I don't need to put myself through such unprofessionalism. I checked 3 months after my initial inquiry and it was still for sale. My original questions were simple due diligence questions. I would've easily bought the horn, but I guess they aren't too motivated to sell it. Bottom line? It's Paul's store and he can do whatever he wants, but I don't have to tolerate it.
