An urban oasis for all in the heart of the city. When I moved into my old basement apartment across the street, I was amazed by the view out of my front window. The park across the street was a hub of beauty and activity. Paul Kane Park has a good-sized water fountain and wading pond in the summer that draws young and old. In the cooler months, the pond is empty and it converts to a skate park. It was only used by a couple of kids, intermittently, when I lived there. The grassy hills around the park attracted lots of people to soak up the sun and the path around the pond had regular strollers. I used to take my fold-up work table out there and write on my laptop. In a world where the sense of community seems to be lacking, it's nice to be in a place surrounded by people who are just there to be out, relax and enjoy the fresh air and space. I've never been hassled there, and only at night is there the odd homeless person stretched out on the grass. It's a fun place for parents to bring their kids for a slosh in the fountain or to play in the small kids' park, adjacent to the green space. Paul Kane Park has been around since 1976. It's named after an Irish painter and artist and is a well-manicured and maintained green space in the Oliver area. read more
