I was driving downtown yesterday and when up Grierson Hill when it occurred to me that I had never been to Louise McKinney Park before. Well that needed to change.
Edmonton has the largest expanse of urban parkland in North America (as I remember hearing one time, don't quote me on that), and there are a lot of parks in the city, especially in the river valley, that you can go to. They all have their own pros and cons, but I think Louise Mckinney might be my new favourite. It's close to downtown, but not too close. The parking seems pretty good (although I was there in the early evening on a weekday, so I imagine it can get busier on weekends and holidays). There are paths for biking and walking, and other modes of transportation (it looks like there's a segway tour you can take too, which seems like a lot of fun to me). There are stairs to get down to the riverfront, and that area is quite nice, with little lookouts to the river. The view is great. If you're at the top of the hill you'll probably get a nice view of the pyramids at the Muttart. Down by the river you might see the Edmonton Queen. If you turn to the west you get a nice view of the downtown skyline. There's a pedestrian bridge to walk across the river, so you walk over to Henrietta Muir Edwards Park on the south side of the river (another park I need to visit). It's a really nice park, with great walking/biking trails, and views of the river valley and downtown. I'll be back, although maybe not until it gets a little warmer. read more
