    View of the river.

I've heard nothing but great things about how this one if the best dog parks in the city. However, did you know it has some pretty wicked mountain biking trails? I've just started to get into biking and my friends took me here to dirty up my new mountain bike. There are some very cool trails here with a wide range of terrane. The range is from neatly trimmed, clear paths to ones with a plethora of roots on the surface. At times I felt like I was a plinko chip on the Price is Right. Also there are some very beautiful views of the river here. It provides a wonderful rest opportunity from riding to enjoy the view. The mosquitos can be crazy here so bathing in off or deep wood is recommended. The reward is, however, a nice and sometimes wild mountain bike trails with some nice views of the river. Couldn't think of a better place for a first time mountain biking excursion in the city.

This is not just a dog park. Sure, there's a large off leash area, but Terwillegar park is also great for a river valley walk, run, cycle, and even cross country skiing. It's also a perfect spot to take your canoe/kayak/paddle board on the river. I love that from this park it's about a 25 min walk across the Terwillegar Foot Bridge and down to the Fort Edmonton Foot Bridge. Gravel parking lot is annoying. Hopefully the city saved some money in the park budget to pave it :) Highly recommend! Great starting point for a safe river valley walk/hike.

The perfect river in the fall!

This is such a wonderful off leash park. This is my favorite spot in Edmonton. Make sure to bring poop bags since the dispensers are often out. Autumn is the best time. The river is crystal clear and I don't hesitate to let my dog go in. I even wade in with her. The loop around the river is about 5k. Most people just walk to the first part of the river but keep going! In the middle of July, the Saskatoon bushes are ripe and you can pick to your hearts content. This is where I tell people to go when then tell me Edmonton is "ugly". Figure it out people!

    Review Highlights - Terwillegar Park

This is a beautiful off leash park where my dogs enjoy running across open fields, exploring game trails and swimming in the river.

Such a quiet spot on the weekend when we visited! Marsh birds, and only one other couple and their dogs, although there were 4 vehicles... The park was quite clean and well picked up, although we always pick up trash etc when we go to a park and try to leave it cleaner than when we came. Only picked up 4 petrified poops, and a small trash bag of plastics and cigarette butts. Smoking in dry grass?! Come on folks. And you brought it in, you carry out your butts?! The walking areas are grassed, mowed & level, although it is a marshland, so there are some areas subject to mud, soft spots etc. Lots of variety of grasses, low shrubs and reefs/water for the pups to sniff and explore. It is not very treed, so if sun is your nemesis, wear a hat if it's sunny out. A nice loop, in a little valley, but it was a calm day so can't say if the wind gets going. It is fenced on 3 sides, but not designed as an off leash park, definitely not secure. There are garbage bins, benches, picnic tables and a poop bag dispenser sponsored by Bone & Biscuit at the parking area, but nothing around the far side of the pond, so be prepared. There are no human toilet facilities, (at least in April 2021 when we visited), again, be prepared. Look forward to visiting next time we are in the area.

The Belgravia Off Leash area is of course located in the community of Belgravia and along Saskatchewan Drive. The official boundary is stated as "Saskatchewan Drive top of bank from University Avenue south to the west side of a tree stand across from the intersection at 202 Saskatchewan Drive South and the lower trail to the footbridge." It is a long narrow piece of park with beautiful views of the river valley. From a lookout spot you can sit on one of the benches and look out over the Equine Centre, Fox Drive, the Valley Zoo and more! It isn't a hugely popular off-leash area only because a lot of people do not know about it so it isn't as busy with dogs. If you like taking your dogs to off-leash areas you should definitely check this one out!

However, there is a 50ish year old couple - woman, 5'6", dark red dyed shoulder length hair, medium weight, no glasses; man, older, short hair, medium build, 5'11", some partial facial hair (?) - who were walking 3 German-shepherd type dogs at 6:45 PM on Sunday October 20, so at dusk/near dark. They walked straight toward us, not offering any warning and then allowed/?encouraged one of their dogs (all 3 were off - leash) to attack our 8 month old puppy, who was on the leash, and did little/nothing to stop it. A second of their dogs tried to get in on the beating. My puppy cried out and yelped but was on the leash. I got their dog off mine with my cane and told them, in no uncertain terms, to put theirs on leashes or to not walk them in an off-leash dog park. Not only were they non apologetic but were, in fact, very threatening towards me after the incident. Clearly, this type of episode has happened before, which is no doubt why they walk the dogs near dark, and intimidate any victims by bullying them. If you see them, avoid them at all costs or carry /use dog spray for your own safety and for that of your dog.
