I cannot stress enough that you should NOT do business with Maurice Ho and Patriot. Maurice and Carlos came to our house on a Friday to give an estimate for tree removal and landscaping. We walked the yard multiple times and discussed what we wanted. I also drew a schematic of the work to be done and provided them a copy. This was very detailed and color coded. We were initially impressed with them and told them that another company gave us a good price but if they would match it we would hire them. They said they could do the work. I told them to make sure they could do what we wanted for $5800 and to double check and let us know. They got back a few minutes later and agreed they could do it. We sent them an email to serve as an agreement. This is the list we emailed Maurice that he agreed to: itemized list of landscape work $5800 to include: 1. Removal of 9 trees (7 in back left of yard/ 2 on side of house) and clean up of debris. 2. Grinding of 2 large existing stumps in middle back of yard plus grinding of other stumps on left side of yard as needed 3. Building of rock garden walls on left side of yard in serpentine pattern 3 garden wall blocks high / 1 block high from back right shrub to fence (see diagram). 4. Garden boxes above filled with soil / back portion with river rock. 5. Building of garden walls on left side of yard 2 blocks high to be filled with river rock. 6. Soil / leveling of back middle portion of yard finished with Fescue Sod 7. Soil/ leveling behind and to the left of concrete pad/shed in back left portion of yard to be finished with Fescue Sod. 8. Existing rock garden behind room to be re-scaped 2 garden wall blocks high filled with river rock. 9. Drain line installed connecting to existing line off retaining wall run to existing fence. 10. Soil / leveling of area immediately behind patio retaining wall to be finished with Fescue Sod. 11. Soil / leveling of area to left of patio to be finished with Fescue Sod. They started the next day. It was a light rain so I asked them if they really wanted to cut down trees in the rain. I got shoulder shrugs and they continued. It started to rain harder and they left. I expected them to show up with a chipper, as there was to be a lot of debris. They hauled the trees away in a truck. That day however, they left without hauling away everything so the yard had cut down trees until Monday. Maurice wanted $2900 for material to get started (we have this in writing). He also wanted the check made out to him and not Patriot. I thought this was odd (usually people will do this to pay workers cash so they get out of payroll taxes so I wondered if he was doing the same thing). They showed up Monday and took down the rest of the trees. I watched from our window and was amazed at how poorly trained they were. They wore no safety equipment, not even goggles. I could not believe Maurice and Carlos would be ok with this blatant lack of safety. At one point, a tree fell down on a light post we had nearby. It broke the light. I waited in hope that they would say something. Instead they tried to force it back on, breaking even more in the process, and never confessed or offered to replace it. They left debris on my 2 of my neighbors lawns so I had to go over and clean it up and apologize. At the end of the day, the "tree stump" guys showed up. They said it would be an extra $1000 because Maurice said they could not do the job without getting rid of all the stumps. If you look on the list above, #2 says removal of stumps as needed. I felt I was being ripped off but wanted the work done and gave him the benefit of the doubt. We negotiated down to $500 but he wanted me to pay in cash (again this is odd, maybe to get out of taxes again?). They left quite a few stumps and didn't even do what they said they were going to do. They cut open a drainage pipe on one side and tried to bury it so I wouldn't notice. On Friday, Maurice showed up and said they were finished. I looked at the work and asked how they were finished, because the yard was a mess and the work was clearly not finished. The garden bed was only half done. They must have run out of blocks (which were not the blocks we agreed to use) because they stole blocks from a pre-existing garden bed I had made to use on the new one. They also put down grass seed instead of sod. Maurice wanted to argue with me that seed was better which shows how he does not know what he is doing. continued: Maurice said he didn't know I wanted sod but that seed was better. Carlos came over to complain, bringing the drawing I gave him. I pointed out everywhere on the paper that said SOD and nowhere did it say grass seed. Maurice complained that he could not make any money if he gave me sod. He wanted to make a deal. I was getting very upset and he said someone needed to take the shaft. I asked Maurice who gets the shaft. He looked me in the eyes and said, "not me". I lost it. I said, "these guys have busted their buts in 95 degree heat and you say they are not getting paid because of your mistake"? He was very uncomfortable, as he should have been. He wanted to work a deal out. I said I was confused because that means he wasn't going to do the work he agreed to. I said he needed to take $1000 off and then said that I was going to take the weekend to think about it. He also said the workers were not going to get paid unless we paid them. We gave him $1500 (a check made out personally to him again, avoiding pay roll taxes maybe?) because my wife is a good person and felt guilty. He threatened us to pay his workers because of his mistake. We emailed him the following Monday and said the work needed to be finished with sod. After they left the unfinished job, I spent quite a bit of time picking up trash that they left. My yard was a mess. Bottles, materials, and cigarette butts were all over my yard. It rained hard that Friday night so the seed had all washed away and my yard was a muddy pit. We tried to work with him. He kept making excuses of why he couldn't complete the work for a while. On 8/26/21 (almost 3 weeks later) he finally said he would come with sod the next day but would need money to pay for the sod. We explained to him that we already gave him money for material and would not be forwarding him any more money for that. We told him we did not trust him to do the work or do it to our satisfaction. He refused to come back unless we gave him money upfront for the sod (again, we paid him $2900 up front for material and by our calculations he had only spent about $500 in material). We paid him $2900 for material, $500 for the added stump removal, and $1500 even though the work was not done and he would not come back unless we paid him more upfront. We are now going through the process of filing a small courts claim against him. Maurice also threatened my wife by saying he would take legal action against her if she wrote a bad review (we have this in writing). This shows what kind of character he has and how you should not trust him. I cannot stress enough that no one should do business with Maurice. He did horrible work, wanted more money than what was agreed to, left our yard a mess, didn't finish the job, and refused to honor what he said he would do. Please be careful with this company. They fraud me for 13 K and they did not do the work we agreed about including Fence, grading, and patio. Richard, One of the company employee took two payments for a total of 13K from me on September 23, 2020 before even start the Job, and he kept delaying the start of the project, once I contacted Mr. Ho, the company owner, he told me that he fired Richard , and he is in Jail, Mr. Ho did not want to take any responsibility.
