I put in a great deal of research to find Emmett and Naieem. I wasn't looking for a good stylist…read more I was looking for one of the BEST. I found Naieem. My hair was embarrassing. The color was horrid; the hair itself was severely damaged. I was convinced my only option was to cut most of it. "No, not true," Naieem said. The gentleman bolstered me in a matter of minutes. He had a plan. I knew my in-depth research had been successful. I'm unable to recall the plan specifics. Naieem is more of a Picasso, not paint by numbers. After the color turned out marvelously it was time for the harsh haircut. No. My hair was healthier. My ends were not hay, they were silky smooth. I only needed a little cut from my hair. Naieem's talent overflows. I doubt my hair has ever looked or felt better. I cannot imagine going anywhere else in the future. I want to share a couple of things I feel are significant. Emmett's The Studio has the kindest, most thoughtful, funny, joyful and professional team. I left not just over the moon about my stunning hair but also with a full and happy heart. PLEASE NOTE: I was not compensated for this review. I am not a family member or employee of Emmett's The Studio. Sadly, I know many businesses compensate reviewers.

I hate giving a negative review -we own a business and know how a bad review can be hurtful and…read moreaffect how you are perceived. The experience with one of their new stylists was so bad it warranted a heads up so others do not have the same experience. I requested a 1st appt. at Frank's based on the great reviews here on Yelp. I was scheduled with a new girl Victoria instead of Frank or Louis. My first red flag. Full disclosure-I had many red flags along the way where I should have stopped her. I've been fortunate to have had a great stylist for over twenty years and was perhaps naive to how fortunate I have been. I had been trying to stay close to our new home downtown since the start of Covid hence the exploration to Frank's. First red flag -Victoria upon 1st greeting said she was SO relieved I wasn't very curly because she wasn't comfortable with that type of hair. I had specifically asked for someone who could cut curl so this was alarming but since she was relieved at it not being too curly I was still positive. She was very sweet and conversational and gave a great shampoo and head massage. From there unfortunately it went downhill. She requested to cut my hair dry. Another red flag. Her inexpensive hair dryer (and later flat iron) were burning my already very fine hair. The heat from the dryer was so hot I said as much but unfortunately I was not heard or understood. It was evident she was inexperienced with my request to blend my hair as she proceeded to cut large sections which did not blend but were making it appear choppy. Side note-her scissors kept getting hooked on my ears with the small hooked section of the scissors. Final red flag -halfway through the cut she shares that she had only been there a month and came from Great Clips. ......... My immediate thought--this seemingly high end salon on Mass Ave with high end products and prices had let someone with little experience outside of Great clips cut their clients hair? Needless to say, in the end my hair looked horribly chopped; her styling did nothing to improve or disguise what a horrible cut I had received. I immediately left and contacted my stylist of 20 years and begged forgiveness. I was thankfully squeezed in the next day and she managed to correct most of the damage. (She was horrified at the cut btw) I don't necessarily blame the young stylist who was clearly inexperienced but looking back realize that one or both the owners should be aware of the poor skill set of the stylist they employ and that represents them. Ironically at check out with one of the owners he was awkwardly silent despite her request for him to schedule a follow-up highlight (she apparently did not do color) not even a mention for scheduling the color much less a question on my satisfaction. Was he aware of the obvious bad cut? I cannot presume to know. I do know that this review should be a red flag for them to be more careful on whom you hire as they represent your business. I'd tried every product under the sun to no avail. I booked an appointment with Susan for a blowout, and she was nice and personable. She knew right away that I probably wouldn't be changing salons, as I love my current stylist. This, however, did not deter her from treating me as she would any of her other clients. If I didn't already have a stylist that I love, I wouldn't hesitate to let her cut and color my hair. She even complimented my cut and color. I did a groupon at another salon later, and that was certainly NOT the case there (review of THAT place to come later). I left with smooth, frizz-free hair that lasted for over 3 months. I'm hooked! They now offer this treatment for 150. Most places charge 250-300 bucks before tip. I WILL be returning for this treatment on a regular basis. Just a note on parking: they have a very small lot and it seems that broad ripple vintage doesn't like their customers parking in their lot. If you can't get a spot on their side of the building, I'd recommend parking on the street.

Update: 6 months later, my review still stands…read more 1.5 stars A hairdresser should never thin out someone's hair without telling them. It takes anywhere from 3 to 6 months or longer to grow back. I came here for the first time get a trim. Per the hairdressers encouragement, I tried a new style to create " movement" in my hair. As I watched her cut my hair, however, I saw that the technique she used to do this was the same one used to thin thick hair. My hair is very fine, and this style does not look good on me. If I knew she was going to do this I wouldn't have gotten it (partially my fault for not clarifying on the technique). The end look was somewhat scraggly and thin. She ended up taking off 3 inches though I only wanted 1. Trying to be objective, the salon itself probably has some great stylists. My experience with Suzannah was not a great one. Establishment was friendly and clean. All the hairdressers seemed to know their clients very well and the client base seems quite loyal.
