We got Brown Jordan patio chairs refurbished three years ago. The color in the plastic strappings have turned dark brown and look terrible. BEWARE, BEWARE, BEWARE I'm not a person prone to complaining or writing on-line reviews, in fact I abhor any kind of confrontation. However, there are times when speaking up is absolutely necessary. Patio Guys is a huge presence in the outdoor furniture repair world in Southern California. It's one of the reasons I chose them to refinish my pieces in 2015. My 4 vintage Brown Jordan "Kantan" chairs and dining table did come back looking spectacular! I especially love this furniture and take very good care of it. So, you can imagine my shock and dismay when about two years in, the bone colored strapping began to develop ugly orange/brown splotches. No amount of cleaning with numerous agents would banish the spots. They started out small and just grew and grew. Before I called PG's, I went on-line to read their reviews, and there it all was in black and white. Although they get a lot of five star ratings, nearly all of their negative reviews stem from problems with the vinyl strapping, which they will not stand behind. Yes, I know, I should have read the fine print on their 5 year warranty... In any event, it's a problem they are well aware of as the disclaimer attests. When I called to see what could be done to remedy the situation, I was told this problem hardly ever happens and I could have a 20% discount to have the chairs re-strapped! I hung up the phone in anger and disbelief. Boo hoo. In the days that followed, I began to think about the situation and the stance that Patio Guys had taken. First, they had me send photos and tried to tell me something was staining the straps. This was impossible because the chairs sat right next to mates wearing their original white Brown Jordan finish and straps; the stains were not appearing on these 40 plus year old pieces. And, NOTHING would remove the stains. Clearly, this was a reaction between the vinyl and the ultra-violet rays from the sun. By the way, these chairs sat under a completely covered patio for the first year. I mean come on, it's f-----g outdoor furniture. So, I have this lovely set of Kantan that now looks like crap. OK, I'll pay the four hundred something dollars to re-strap them and then what, it happens again??? I've looked around on some other sites and some of PG's competitors actually advertise super resilient strapping that they guarantee won't degrade from the sun. I wonder why Patio Guys don't use this strapping? I would gladly have paid more for the job if I'd had the option. Patio Guys go on quite a bit on their website about commitment to quality work and customer service. Sadly, I experienced neither from them. They are offering sub-par vinyl and covering it with a disclaimer. If the problem truly occurs very rarely, why the need for the disclaimer at all. Lastly, if it is a rare occurrence, why not just re-strap my chairs as an offering of good faith? It would cost them $3.50 and an hour or two of labor. I suspect the ugly spots show themselves quite often. At least often enough to make the moral solution not very cost effective. It always comes down to money doesn't it? So, here's the take-away. If you use Patio Guys, do so at your own risk. I imagine some colors hide the spots better than others, so be sure to ask Jan and Anna which ones are safe, the bone color definitely is not.
