It should have been easy to find piadina places and variety in Ravenna, but I suppose you run out of luck if you look for such a place on a Sunday (at least one that is veggie-friendly!).
Tip for those of you coming to Italy on vegetarian and even vegan diets - make sure you ask how your piadina is made. Traditional recipes call for lard---or strutto---so it's good to ask the restaurant before hand what recipe they use. Otherwise the recipe calls for olive oil which is pretty safe for most of us, haha!
My friend and I wanted to have piadina as our last meal in Ravenna, and had a hard time finding a place that was open with options. We stumbled upon Pasticceria Ferrari Ravenna, which wasn't my first choice, but at least offered piadina on their menu.
The whole vibe, like most old Italian bars, was straight out of the 70s---dim lighting, off bold colors, and this feel of stale dust in the air. Not the most "appetizing" place to chow down at, but it's what was available.
I ended up getting a piadina with squacquerone cheese and rucola. Nothing special, but it was surprisingly filling. The piadina itself was on the tougher side, but that's how you know it's vegetarian-friendly! Apparently, the lard makes the bread more chewy and pliable.
While Pasticceria Ferrari Ravenna wasn't on my list of "fine dining in Ravenna", at least the staff were friendly and there were options available for people of varying diets. read more
