So if you feel like you'll land on a spot because someone popped in and just left, you might be out of luck. We were able to be seated because we came a little earlier, and I believe someone at the bar left earlier than anticipated. 3 - It's quite dark/moody. If you have a person who's weirded out by spaces like this, go somewhere else. If you can't read the menu in the darker/lower lit spaces, bring out your phone's flashlight. One thing that's GREAT about the menu is that they have it in contrasting colors (ie light paper and black ink) and the font is large. There was a spot that I went to recently where the lighting was very low and they used a dark tan font on manila colored paper. If the lighting was normal, it wouldn't have been a problem ... but in lower light, the lack of contrast was not helpful! 4 - The staff is really great. Canvas is a mix of lounge, bar, club and patio...and I am here for it all. The vibe here is a bit different than the other "family" bars in town, and in a much better way in my opinion. The crowd is diverse, more respectful and less pretentious than you may get downtown. This goes for the bartenders and staff too. Drinks are fairly priced and always poured well. They have a good variety of bottled and canned cocktails/beverages as well, but the cocktails, especially their seasonal selections, are where it is at. While we have been known to belly up to the bar or grab a high top inside, the patio, which has evolved in the last year, is our favorite spot. It is open air but able to be temperature controlled, covered to keep you out of the rain or sun, and has enough seating for small or large groups. Inside the layout is standard with the bar, a few booths, lounge seating a dance floor and a stage...because why wouldn't there be a stage?! My only gripe with the full layout is there is no room for the bar to get backed up, it is basically two deep and then you have to move over. Not sure if there is a solve for that, but worth pointing out. However, even with this, the bartenders are always efficient and keep things moving so it doesn't get backed up for long. Canvas is becoming the anchor of the "gayborhood" in this area and since they moved in an LGBTQ+ center and clinic have taken up residence in the same plaza. The parking lot is also home to the cities only Gay Farmers Market, which is a fun place to wander around before or after popping into Canvas for a cocktail or three. Service was just two bartenders for the whole place (which was about 3/4 full), but they were both pretty quick in providing me a menu. The menu is pretty large - almost 4-5 pages purely of cocktails, but also a few options for wine, beer, NA and extremely light bites food (wouldn't plan on having a full meal here.) I opted for two drinks off their signature cocktails list: Dolce Inverno (pistachio liqueur, vodka) and the Smoke n' Cider (apple brandy, cinnamon, smoke). I do think these seem on par with other cocktail spots in east, but maybe not my top tier craft cocktail spots overall for Nashville.
