Even living 700+ miles away I marvel at Witschey's, and tell my friends at home about the last grocery store that will still be open when the Apocalypse comes. Case in point: In 1993 a flood ravaged the area, flooding the store, and all of downtown, with several feet of water. Witschey's reaction: Let's bring people in in boats to get groceries. The more cynical among you may think "of the cheap ways to make a buck", but I assure you that money was definitely second to making sure that local people could eat. They are also open for a good deal of the day on all national holidays. Sounds similar to the cut-throat antics of a certain megachain that we are all familiar with, but this is a small community grocery store with great customer service, nice owners, relatively responsible business practices (to the best of my knowledge), and relatively happy employees. The ONLY reason they don't get 5 stars is because their produce and some of the product selection could be better. The produce might not be their fault since they have to import due to the lack of working farms in the area, but if the local farmers could come together and turn their produce selection into a farmer's market place... wow. The product selection...well, I am sure that the clientele dictates the products stocked, and while Mr. Bee Potato chips seem to be a local favorite I do not like them. If they could replace a lot of the processed stuff with more organics, bulk items and locally sourced items (Although they do carry local honey), you could put this little gem down in any community in the United States and it would quickly become a local favorite. I will stop there every time I am in New Martinsville for the rest of my life.
