The tasty breakfast at the Park Victorian in Auburn, California
    Phillip Z.

Gold country is one of our favorite road trips in California -- just a quick 2 hour drive from San Francisco or a 6-hour drive from LA. Okay, it's a LONG drive from LA, but we feel like it's so worth it. Once you're there, you'll feel completely transported to another time. And not just because you'll likely be completely disconnected because of the lack of cell service. We couldn't get enough of this gorgeous boutique hotel that was recently remodeled by the friendly hosts. Plus, the beds are beyond comfortable. I don't think I've ever had a better night's sleep. Start your day off right with the breakfast after a night at the Park Victorian Hotel in Auburn, California. This tiny town is the perfect place to base yourself. There are a lot of boutique hotel and B&B options in the area, but most sort of remind us of the backdrop from 'The Exorcist.' During a previous visit to the area, we stayed in the attic of a B&B that was filled with creepy dolls. I'm still scarred... We also loved the views from the Park Victorian, perched high above the town of Auburn. Before heading out of town, wander the streets to check out restaurants for that night and other local businesses. There is a farmer's market right in the heart of downtown - not far from the hotel - in the courthouse parking lot (open 8 AM - noon on the weekends year round). It's compact, but clearly a favorite spot among the locals.

This quaint little property is absolutely amazing! My wife and I had a wonderful stay here and Laurie was top notch! Unfortunately there is no breakfast yet but nonetheless we really liked it We will definitely come back here and the breakfast will just be a bonus!

    The cutest little Shannon room!

I don't have to even convince you of staying here because all the other reviews are 100% accurate! I came here and stayed in the Shannon room which was plenty and perfect for 1 person! I like to sometimes go on a drive and stay in a hotel over night to unplug and catch up on books, journaling, reading my bible and hangin out with God, etc. I drove an hour to stay here and it looks like this will be a tradition and I will be returning for more of this GORGEOUS stay, hospitality and the feel of "home" Scott was awesome and made himself available if I needed anything, but everything was already provided! The breakfast was AMAZING!! & Laurie even gave me her home-made granola recipe which was so yummy! In addition to her (THE BEST) cinnamon roll recipe too! I don't think I can copy her recipe and make them as good but I can't wait to try them both! If I could give the Park Victorian 10 stars, I would! You won't regret your time here! Don't bother with another place to stay. Come here to get extra care & hospitality! :)

    Beautiful water feature.

This was the third time that my husband and I have stayed at the Park Victorian - and each time we've been, we've always had an amazing experience. It's the perfect place to recharge and relax, either as a stopping point on a longer trip to Tahoe, or as a destination to Auburn itself. We've had the pleasure of staying in both the Wrigley and Chana rooms. Both rooms have amazingly comfortable mattresses, pillows and linens. You can be sure to get a very restful sleep. The decor is modern, yet perfectly preserves the vintage look and feel of the space. Every room has a special charm! I cannot say enough about the innkeeper, Laurie. She always goes out of her way to make you feel at home. And, there's really nothing quite as great as waking up to the smell of her freshly baked cinnamon rolls in morning! During our last visit we got to see the newly finished landscaping on the property. The water feature, new lawn, and patio offer great places to sit and relax while overlooking the cute town of Auburn. Park Victorian definitely has a special place in our hearts, and we look forward to our next stay!

    Awesome place!!

Excellent bed and breakfast. Laurie and Scott made sure every detail was attended to. The room was great - great view out to old town Auburn, super nice bed, and the AC was quiet as whisper. Since we had to check out early they went out of the way to bake cinnamon rolls and packed them for us on the road. Thank you for the wonderful experience. It was our best B&B ever.

The breakfast next morning, however, was disappointing and lacking. We came down at 6:30am when nobody else except one other lady was there yet. The yogurt machine wasn't ready and there were no sandwiches. The cereal selections included Raisin Bran and Cheerios. They had instant oatmeal, apple sauce cups, banana and hard boiled eggs. As we were waiting for sandwiches, a 3 person family who sat down after us was given priority for the sandwiches. The lady making them literally handed them over to this 3 person family sitting at their table instead of putting them down where the sandwiches go. I was fine with that except we were in a hurry. When I asked for them next (assuming she went by those who asked her first), she did not give it to me but put it in the sandwich section. At this time, there were 10 more people already. The problem is she only brought out three at a time. A lady took one and I took two for our family of four and I had to feel terrible about it. Later, I heard from the 3 person family that they didn't even want all the sandwiches. Needless to say, I am extremely unhappy about this breakfast experience. We left at 6:55am. Please tell the staff to have sandwiches ready at the breakfast hour at 6am as listed. Also please tell the staff not to hand sandwiches to people whilst there are other folks waiting for them. It was extremely UNFAIR of her to do so. The overall experience is 2 stars since 2 stars were deducted for the breakfast experience.

As well as assist me in making the reservation that someone else is paying for :-) So this review is basically based off of customer service. Upon arrival, we were given 3 key cards for one room and 2 for the other room. The grooms mom had put together a gift bag for each room so we received 2 - one for my room and one for the other room. We both left ours with the receptionist's while we went to our cars to bring our luggage up to our rooms. We forgot to grab them before we headed out for the night but assumed they would be held for us. Imagine my disappointment, when I went to go grab it later that night, that I was informed the other couple we checked in with, the girl had grabbed them. We didn't check in with a couple but we did with another female who was roomed with another female not present. Our male friend showed up as we were leaving to our cars so maybe the assumption was there but neither of them had the bags. I was told that an unknown female must have grabbed them and that one of the make receptionists thought each guest in each room was supposed to have 1 vs. 1 per room. There was only 7 left and they were for the guests checking in tomorrow. We were given the option for extra points to our account or free breakfast which we took. Food was aright but I would have eaten elsewhere had I known better. I'm knocking stars down because it was the sentimental loss of not having the bags the night prior to the wedding. I found out later that one of the groomsmen didn't get a bag so it was definitely a downer. The shower upon turning on the water had hair floating and leftover soap/shampoo was visible. I had to run the shower for a bit before going in. We were given bedding without downing at my request due to asthma and allergies and we were far from the elevator and we were on the top floor near the bride and groom and some of the groomsmen which was perfect! Convenient location with in n out down below and we were given one coupon for complimentary nonalcoholic / alcoholic beverage at Maxs restaurant.

The retro aesthetic is incredible. It has that perfect vintage roadside charm, but with a modern, fresh, recently renovated feel that is very well done. The rooms are big, warm, clean, and super comfortable. I loved everything about the design, from the spacious layout to the stylish finishes. The bathroom and shower are huge, the bed is incredibly comfy, and the large TV and private patio really made it feel like a boutique stay rather than a typical motel. The staff was genuinely friendly and welcoming, and the location is excellent. You're within walking distance of great food and drinks, including The Lounge at Foothill Bowl, which was such a fun spot. The 10 percent discount I got there thanks to staying at Foothills Motel was a really nice perk. There are also great nearby options for Japanese, Mexican, and Beach Hut Deli, so you're set for whatever you're craving. One of my favorite parts was the exterior. The property is beautifully designed, and at night it lights up in such a cool, classic way that it's worth taking a walk around just to admire it. If you love retro style, comfort, and friendly local hospitality, Foothills Motel is a must stay in Auburn. I'll absolutely be back.

From my memory in youth they were always decent to well kept establishments. So after an impulsive trip from Reno to Sacramento one day I was headed back to Reno and decided to not drive through the mountains in the dark of night. I saw the Red Lion on the list of places to stay and decided yep that's the one. I pulled in and went to the counter. The check in process was efficient so no complaints there. I walk upstairs and down the hall a bit dazzled by the dated carpet and the random sequencing of room numbers. The sequencing is still a bit bewildering. I get to my room and none of the bedside plugs works. I ascertain that well... none of the plugs are plugged in to make the things work. I take it upon myself to rectify the issue and pull the bed away from the wall and realize why they are not plugged in. Well the outlet is only half secured into the wall. I plug it in anyways and push the bed back. Success! Plugs now work on the night stands. After I settle down I go to take a shower. I am greeted by paint peeling off the walls and dirty switch covers. I then start the shower to abysmal water pressure. This is likely because the rear of the shower head connection puts out as much water as the shower head itself. On the bright side the bed was comfortable to my liking anyways. Not a rock and just soft enough to relax into. Now allegedly there is breakfast but at this point I don't know that I even wanna risk it for the biscuit. I have already renamed this place in my mind as no longer the Red Lion but simply The Mangy Lion instead. I would recommend a revamp of The Mangy Lion to restore it to its former prominence as a Red Lion.
