Just to give you an idea what pares is, it's a Filipino braised beef stew served with garlic rice and clear soup. It's origins include being served roadside, street food-like, almost.
I've only been to one other mom-and-pop pares joint about a week before, so that place set the bar in terms of goodness. I had to try another for the sake of comparing.
I mentioned this to Cuzzo and his wife, and after a bit of shopping around the mall, they mentioned there might be one of those spots at the food court. "Let's go!"
First thing I noticed was: they have a warranty on their food?! "Pag di masarap, soli mo" translates to "If it's not delicious, return it." Ohhhh, I got even more interested! This tells me they stand by their product!
I was gonna go for the classic, but I was curious about the tendon bowl. So I went for that. And a side of soda to wash it down. Cuzzo and wifey got the classics - funny enough, this is their first run on pares, and with me talking about it, they, too, got curious!
Got our pager and waited patiently to be beeped. This is in a mall food court, and as busy as this mall is (it's busy like... ALL the time!) we were lucky to find a few open tables. What's cool about it is that at anytime customers leave their table, staff is there immediately to clean up. Nice!
The wait wasn't long, by the way...
The side soup was a pretty good starter to get the appetite going! But I honestly set it aside after a couple of sips because I was anxious to try the main course. The broth was thick-like, a couple of notches to almost being gravy. Seasoning was above par. The meat as well as tendon were both tender and chewy. My only issue is that eating it with garlic fried rice altered the overall taste altogether. It was truly distracting.
I went back to the counter and ordered a side of plain white rice. Tried that with the dish and had a better appreciation of what their pares really tastes like. I know it's a personal preference, but I felt it was much better vs pairing it with the garlic fried rice.
FOOD: 4.25. It was delicious. They really stand by their food warranty!
SERVICE: 3. Not a lot of interaction, but not bad either.
VALUE: 5. For the bargain price of 190PHP ((more or less $3.50USD) it's a bargain!
PARKING: Located inside CSI Lucao mall. It gets busy.
OVERALL: 4.25.
How did to compare to my first run?! Slightly better! Enough to have this place set THAT bar!
I don't live anywhere nearby, but if I were to be around and be in the mood, I'd make a stop.
In the meanwhile, the search still continues for the perfect (or as close as possible to it!) pares spot! read more
