Heather is a cheerful and patient teacher, perfectly able to make comfortable even those very new to the practice of yoga. One of her loveliest classes consists of mindful breathing and relaxation; letting the body loosen up and let go of all the tension that we hold without knowing. I practiced with Julie as I became more familiar with the basic poses. Her style is gentle, encouraging, and promoting of mindfulness - of listening to your body and not pushing yourself to injury. I am particularly grateful to Julie because after I suffered a knee injury that greatly limited my ability to practice yoga, she helped me design a series of poses with extensive modifications so that I could strengthen my body without exacerbating my pain. Also, I confess that I admired Julie's selection of music for her class so much, that I asked her to share her playlist with me for my home practice (which she generously did). I recommend Heather and Julie's classes wholeheartedly, no matter the level of fitness or previous experience with yoga. The best way to keep up to date with their schedule is via their facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/breathinginvancouver).

This place really is that good, all because of Melonie. I find it difficult to express in positive terms something which, by its very nature, is so extraordinarily painful that the day after I come here I wake up howling to an uncaring sky that my body is about to fall apart yet again. "How could she do this to me?" I whine. "I thought yoga was supposed to be restful, relaxing, good for the body and soul!" runs through my head as I tried to drag myself to a hot shower to recover. Seriously, all of you women 30 years older than I am who do this with every outward appearance of pleasure and relaxation, I hate you. I got dragged here by a friend who told me "this is the most painful thing that you could ever do," and then laughed at me when I scoffed at him. I, in turn, brought a young lady to whom I told the same thing. She then laughed at me as she had a wonderful time and it didn't hurt her at all. For her part, the instructor also laughs at me as she rams the iron jackboot of relentless health down my spine. I sense a pattern here. I refuse to buy a block of lessons (even though it's cheaper) primarily because it's hard enough for me to convince myself or anyone else that I'm willing to pay somebody to do this to me on a semiweekly basis, and the thought of trying to explain to somebody, "I pay a woman to beat the living crap out of me every Wednesday morning on a schedule" is going a little bit too far for me. She has other services; she does massage, nutritional counseling, and something called "prenatal yoga" which in my mind is probably one of the funniest mental images ever. I'm about as qualified to comment on any of these things as I am to explain what, exactly, the difference between styles (styles?) of yoga are. Personally, I wonder if yoga masters ever get in conflict over whose yoga is the more relaxing yoga and face each other in yoga-offs. Somebody asked me if this was "hot yoga" and apparently my response of "I'm plenty hot by the end of it" was not correct. Anyway, two thumbs up for this place, and if she has her way probably several other appendages as well. At the same time. While balancing on one foot.

All she would need to do is put on some thigh high black leather boots, wear a corset and carry a whip. Then men would pay her 200 plus per hour to do exactly the same thing: torture them. Their are times during class when I f_ing hate yoga. The strange thing is that I somehow always feel better afterwards. Since I was 25 years old I have had a recurring problem pain in the left side of my neck. I could not turn my head to the left. A doctor diagnosed the problem as an inflamed muscle. I would get it 2-5 times per year and it lasted about 3-44 days. I used to have to treat it with Aleve and ice packs. No longer. Since I started taking yoga classes once a week I have had zero neck pain. That's about as good of an endorsement as I can give. Thanks Melonie.

I've taken two instructors and the classes were similar which made me think it's the yoga 6 style, rather than the specific instructor. The restore classes have their pros and cons. It's nice that's it's heated, makes the workout feel more effective. The other plus is the cold towel at the end. The main con: the class is too fast paced. The most effective restorative classes I've taken (mostly in Seattle and Beaverton) are as mind and "edge" focused as physical. The positions are held for upwards of 15-30+ seconds. You kind of feel pain or discomfort but you let up a little or suffer through it for a deeper release or some sort of emotional/mental realization. You don't really get there if you're switching moves every 10 seconds. You can't really make self discoveries or recovery if you're too focused on the next move. It's hard to explain but if you've experienced it, you know. IYKYK. Other cons are both classes had very receptive movements. One instructor here really liked downward dogs, the other really liked sun salutations, we don't need to do these 5-10 times. Other adds I've liked other places, but not dealbreakers are: sound bowls, artificial candles, more like meditative music without words, instructors that help push you into a deeper stretch/massage you if you're interested in that, and some inspiring quotes or things to focus on or think about in class. Overall, west Vancouver is getting its bougie fitness together. It's slow but this is the only option right now. Good enough when you need a class, but a drive might be worth it.

Having a "real, live" instructor really helps you to focus / relax much better than watching a video, and she really kept her eye on us and gently corrected our forms which was very positive for me. In between, had a regular cycle of body work appointments with physical therapists, massage therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, float tanks, and more to treat the stress and aches and pains of juggling a legal career, frequent travel and family. Then I found Yogilachi. It seemed a little intimidating at first, but I'll try most things once. And I'm so glad I did. The movements are available and beneficial whatever the fitness level, the instructor cares deeply and accommodates the individual needs of each student, and teaches the class to meet the needs of those in the class. Through the semiprivate sessions that incorporate all the best and most effective movements and teachings from a variety of disciplines, and the latest information about physiology and healing, Yogilachi condenses the best mind and body work into each lovely session. The best part is the return on investment--putting in the effort to retrain the body has lasting effects far beyond the class hour. My own transformations have been profound--improved posture, stamina, recovery time, focus, mood, and time! All things we all want more of. As a result, I'm more focused and creative at work, more present for my family and a better human for the border collie. Where I would be tired and sore from a few-mile walk with the dog, I can now roam the forests for 4 or 5 miles a couple of times a week and still have energy for all the other things that have to get done. Where I would return from a trip exhausted and sick with barely the energy to binge watch netflix, I now have the energy to wander the woods, which offers much better brain and spirit recovery value! And because I feel better, I manage stress better, I make better choices, I make better progress in meeting my goals--about food, about how I spend my time and about how to live each day. Results may vary, but any step toward greater health and wellness is a step in the right direction. Take the leap!
