Harvelle's is the latter. Tucked close to the beach in Santa Monica, this tiny little place might not look like much at first. The setup is a tightly woven arrangement of vintage chairs and tables, with a long row of couches hugging the wall. But once you're inside, you realize they have their reasons for their layout. If you're lucky enough to grab a front-row seat or one of the coveted bar stools, you'll start to notice the details: metal pipes, and rods that spark the imagination. You're in for a treat! What I really appreciate about Harvelle's is that they don't charge you an arm and a leg for tickets. The artists are humble, talented, and consistently engaging. I've been to burlesque shows where the performers feel like they're just there, going through the motions. But not at Harvelle's. Every time I've gone, the women bring something artful, classy, and unapologetically bold to the stage. It's burlesque, yes, but not cheap in style or spirit. Anytime a friend's visiting from out of town, this is the spot I take them to. It's a must-see in Santa Monica. And honestly, what other place is giving you burlesque seven nights a week?

She came to Improv not too long ago which is a lot closer to where I live and missed her show. What a bummer!:-( Well, last night we made this a reality. She had 2 shows. One was at 7pm, and the other one was at 9pm. Closed on Mondays and they open the bar/club at 6pm. We went to the 9pm show. The drive over there was pretty hectic and far. My friend offered to drive, since she has a newer car.. Well, a friend of mine and I decided to go see her live last night and we are both glad that we did! She was FANTASTIC! Can't comment about the food, because we had both eaten before we went. However, we both got drinks. I got a small Espresso Martini(made to perfection)! She got a beer and we both got 2 bottled waters and Sprite. We were sitting not too far away from the stage and the sound of the microphone and overall the system was great! No complaints. They hold many different events from comedy to concerts. You can even dance. They have a decent dance floor, and the venue itself was fairly large, with bar tables and chairs. It was somewhat crowded, but we were not bothered with that. Customer service hit the mark. Tickets were $41.00 & up. Venue was nice, clean, including restrooms and we parked outside on the street. I believe they also have their own parking. One other thing that I should mention, it gives you that old school vibe that I love. Would highly recommend this venue and I will definitely return if and when anyone that I know and like has a gig. Was our 1st time, and definitely will NOT be the last. Thank you all very much for an AWESOME ENTERTAINMENT!!!

Check their online schedule to find their latest offerings as music changes! The venue also offers food and drinks. If eating good to reserve a table so you can enjoy it for the night rather than standing for the concert. The food is American like with pizza being the featured item. The food is not cheap but you are at a concert hall. The venue also offers a full bar: the cocktails were ok but nothing to rave about. I would say your focus should be to enjoy the music. I thought the performance we saw was solid and cost a mere 19 dollars. And maybe grab some drinks. Remember the venue is not large so plan to be among the crowd on the floor unless you grab a table along the wall. There are only about 4-5 tables not in VIP area and maybe three in VIP area. Book ahead as limited tables. Enjoy! Cheers!

I want to be fair here, because this is really a story about two very different visits…read more The first time I came in, I worked with Barry, and he was fantastic. I had never bought a guitar in my life and barely knew what questions to ask. He sat down with me, pulled close to ten guitars off the wall, and played every single one so I could actually hear the differences for myself. He never once rushed me or made me feel like a clueless beginner taking up his time (great player btw!) By the time I walked out I had fallen for the shop and found the exact guitar I wanted, a Taylor 114ce. I was so excited that I could not wait to come back the next day to buy it. I had also planned to sign up for lessons there. The next day is why I'm writing this. Barry wasn't in, and the guy working the guitar repair counter helped me instead. He acted like I was a massive inconvenience from the second I walked up. The store was nearly empty at the time, just one woman trying out a guitar in the back and another customer making conversation up front, both of whom were perfectly friendly when I chatted with them for a minute. The guitar I wanted was a floor model with two deep scratches gouged into the front, the kind that do not buff out, plus a pickguard worn down from being played constantly. It was still priced like it was brand new. When I asked if anything could be done about the price, he went to check and came back offering fifty dollars off. I asked if he could come down to seven hundred and he flatly said no, though he said he could throw in strings. All of it came wrapped in the same cold attitude, like I was lucky he was even bothering with me. I decided to leave and went to another shop that had the exact same guitar, brand new and so pristine it clearly had never been played. I did not even think to ask for a discount because it was in perfect condition, but they gave me one anyway and knocked ten percent off without me saying a word. On top of that they set me up with a stand, a tuner, a capo, a handful of picks, strings, and even a hat, and discounted those accessories too. They were thrilled to help the entire time. I bought my first guitar there and booked my first lesson there too, and I walked out feeling exactly the way you should feel buying your first instrument. So if you go to McCabe's and you get Barry, you will understand why this place has the reputation it does. He was the reason I almost became a customer for life. There was also a gentleman there both days who I believe may have been the manager. The second day he gave me a quick hello and then stepped into the back right as I pulled the guitar down to start the process. I have no idea whether he picked up on how that interaction was going, but I really wish he had been out front for it, because a ready and excited first-time buyer walking out empty handed could have been saved. If this somehow gets back to Barry, thank you for helping me find my first guitar.

The concert itself was enjoyable. The group playing was great, and expanded my horizons as far as music goes. There were props all over the place, which were great. The lighting could use some improvement, as well as the main band's timing (they were 40 minutes late). But all in all, it was a good time and a good way to end the summer.
