I'm honestly surprised they've managed to survive for so long. However, they do seem to have a hand on a niche market - fly fishing. If I did any fly fishing, I'd be in here for sure to get geared up. Nearly half of the store is dedicated to fly fishing. It's a novel experience to come by and check out all the flies even if you don't actually do any fishing. Nowadays though I don't bother going to that part of the store. They have a good selection of shoes and hiking boots, several knives and utility tools, clothes, jackets, underwear, backpacks and bags. There are some knick-knacks throughout for camping, hiking and the outdoor lifestyle but the selection and variety is very limited. On a recent stop in here I was looking at bags and the shopkeeper asked if I needed help. I struck up a conversation about what bag I was specifically looking for and mentioned that they didn't have it. He just kinda said "oh" and that was about it. Didn't offer to look around for me in case I was missing something. Didn't offer to order it in for me online. It was an incredibly awkward experience. In fact, it sort of compares to many of my recent visits in here because staff has not always been particularly engaging. They seem to just stare at you intently as you walk around the store browsing. Like they think you'll swipe something. The prices are a bit high on things. But prices are always high on outdoor gear, really. They'd be the same at about any other outdoors store. The thing here is that, being a local shop, they can't really offer the sort of membership-based, nationwide deals that big chain stores can.

The store itself is spacious and well organized, with a good selection of Patagonia's outdoor apparel and gear. Everything is displayed nicely and the environment feels clean and inviting, making it easy to browse. That said, the pricing is full retail, and Patagonia products can be pretty expensive. Coming from the San Francisco Bay Area where Patagonia outlet stores are more common, I'm used to finding better deals. Because of that, I'm a bit hesitant to pay full price and tend to compare with other outdoor retailers like REI, where you can sometimes find similar gear at more competitive prices. The South End location itself is lively and fun to explore, with lots of nearby restaurants, coffee shops, and dessert spots. It's a great area to walk around and make a few stops while you're there. Parking can be a bit challenging in South End, especially during busy times, so plan accordingly. The Mast Store Annex is located in Valle Crucis, NC, about 2 tenths of a mile from the Original…read moreMast General Store. But it has a completely different layout, is smaller, and sells a different inventory. The building was built in 1909 by R.L. Lowe, a competing merchant. John and Faye Cooper preserved this location, officially opening it in 1982 because they needed more space for their growing business. The building has a much more open layout than the Original store and even sells ice cream outside! The Annex features a massive candy barrel room with hundreds of varieties of candies, from saltwater taffy to chocolates to old-fashioned hard candies. This location also carries more of the rugged outdoor wear, camping supplies, backpacking gear, and sleeping bags Because the two buildings feature completely separate inventory layouts, I didn't end up buying anything here. My arms were completely full with items at the original store, so I didn't go back for the rest of the stuff I wanted and just planned to get it at the other store instead. Once I got to the Annex and realized they didn't carry the same items, I almost drove back to the original store to get them, but ultimately didn't. Make sure to buy everything you want at whichever building you are at before leaving their parking lot!
