(*Staff member Malia recommended doors off. ) Conor gave interesting commentary throughout the tour as we experienced the beauty of Oahu. It was breathtaking to have an aerial view of the "nooks and crannies" of the island from the island's coastline to the mountains! Highly recommend Rainbow Helicopters! Had to reschedule for different day on bigger copter that holds more people and would be with other people. However, on that flight, the other passengers couldn't make it. So we ended up private after all. Wilson was a great host, Michael "Turtle" was a great knowledgeable pilot, I forget everyone else's name. But they were all very hospitable. The flight was amazing. 1.5 hours of coastline and waterfalls, canyons, valleys, and picturesque views of the largest volcano Mauna Kea. Very smooth ride. Even though the pilot said "turbulence" in areas. We barely noticed any. Highly recommend paying extra for the pictures AND video package of your flight. One half of video image screen is inside, bottom half is outside.

While driving from the…read moreairport, I noticed a sign about Magnum Helicopters advertising they did "doors off" helicopter flights. I was intrigued by that. Earlier that week, I had done another helicopter tour with another company that was more sedate but good as well. The day b4 my flight back to the states, I decided to give Magnum a try. I was looking for a thrilling ride that could rival skydiving (I used to skydive many years ago). This ride gave me the thrill I was looking for. It was so fun to have the doors off, be strapped in, and hear the wind rushing by. This place is very very conscientious about safety. You watch a safety briefing on a video, etc. The ground crew takes good care of you and makes sure you are strapped in well, etc. Our pilot was Josh and he made the whole trip fun. He was an excellent pilot, took us to see all the important sights, and had great banter with the passengers. You can tell he is very experienced with piloting a helicopter and very safe too. Feeling the wind blow in your face, mussing up your hair as you fly around was a lot of fun. We could bring our phones with us to take pics and videos but they had to be in a plastic bag case tethered to our wrist (case and tether is available for rent or purchase). Magnum Helicopters is also based upon the Magnum PI show. The helicopter is painted in those colors and there is a Ferrari that one can sit in (in the waiting area) and gets pics in. The pricing for our 45 minute helicopter ride was very reasonable. We decided to do doors open instead of closed which made it more exciting. We were greeted by a great smile from a female staffer who gave us safety instructions and assisted us to the helicopter. The pilot, Riley, was great with bring us over the ocean and various spots on the island. He was very detailed and informative about island facts. He did a great perfect landing on the ridge for us to enjoy the scenery after flying us near the sacred waterfalls. Simply loved the trip and would do it again. ENJOY!

So, while staying at Turtle Bay, I treated my brother and myself to a helicopter ride. It was organized by the hotel concierge. We were so excited. Upon arrival at the helicopter office, Kanani showed us a diagram of where each of us would be sitting (there were 2 other people whom we'd never met on the same helicopter. I saw the seat they planned to put me in and I told Kanani that I'd prefer to be on the outside (or in either of the 2 back seats). She said, "oh, you will love it!" So, I got in & soon found myself staring at an ancient control panel the entire time. It was the worst waste of money. I couldn't see anything. I politely pulled her aside when it was over and asked her for a refund since I couldn't enjoy the view (the whole point of doing it). She said, "call the main office and they will be able to handle it." So, stopped back at the concierge desk on my way back into the hotel and mentioned it to them. They said, "I'm SO sorry! Yes, we will call the company and take care of it for you." (It had been charged to my room at Turtle Bay). I thought, "great. The experience sucked, but, at least I'm not going to lose hundreds of dollars because of it. An hour of my life, yes, but not lots of money." Unfortunately now that I'm back home, the charge is still on my bill. The concierge has now put me in touch with the helicopter company directly. They have refused to give me a refund, stating, "you should've specified that you wanted a specific seat when you first booked it." Again, it was the Turtle Bay concierge who was kind enough to facilitate the booking. But, even if it had been me, how would I (or anyone) know to ask for a seat that didn't have an almost completely obstructed view? Had I known I'd have such an obstructed view, I never would've spent hundreds of dollars to do this. I get that they have weight requirements, but, this middle seat should go at a discount with a disclaimer. To summarize, the customer service of this place is really bad. You might end up having to stare at a large console of instruments for the duration of your helicopter tour, and the helicopter itself was archaic (that last part wouldn't have been a big deal if I'd been able to see outside). Instead it just added to the entire experience :(

The location was super convenient--just minutes from the Honolulu airport--making it easy to find and get to. We flew with Scott, who was not only an excellent pilot but also a fantastic guide. His calm presence and deep knowledge of the islands made the experience even more memorable. He shared fascinating facts and stories throughout the flight that gave so much more context to the breathtaking scenery. We opted for the doors-off experience, and WOW--what a game-changer! It added a whole new level of excitement and really made us feel like we were flying through the heart of Hawaii. The company team allocated everyone fairly. One person from the family in the front. The rest of the family sat in the back. I was solo, so I was the other person nominated in the front. The helicopter can seat 6 passengers. 2 in front, which have full view of the front of course and sides. 4 in back, only the two passengers on the sides have windows. We had 5 passengers total, not including the pilot. You can bring camera equipment like a mirrorless camera or DSLR with a long lens, but make sure it is not extremely long and intrusive. I highly advise against bringing very large camera gear. You are only allowed your one camera with the lens attached at all times, no camera bags, no extra lens. Please be mindful of this. Nicole was our pilot. She is excellent! If you get her as a pilot you are in good hands! She is patient and mindful of all passengers during and after the flight. She gives everyone on the flight multiple chances and opportunities to see everything by performing multiple turns to allow all passengers on all sides to see while keeping it smooth. She narrated the key points while also allowing periods of quiet ambience to enjoy the breath taking views of Oahu. Whatever questions you asked, she answered professionally and with courtesy. Every pilot has their own unique music playlist in the background. Nicole had Deadmau5 - Ghosts N Stuff (Nero Remix); Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa'i - We Know The Way (Finale); Weezer - Island In the Sun; Coldplay - Clocks; Chicago - Saturday In the Park. There are a few others I didn't list or I don't recognize, but also I am being bias and I'm just recognizing the songs I personally enjoyed and listened to. The flight was about 55 minutes approximately, based on video you can purchase at the end, from take off to landing. My vacation was not very long in Hawaii, approximately a week. Out of everything I have done from hiking, driving, dining, and so on this was probably the number one highlight out of the whole trip! If you are able to do this helicopter tour, please do it, it is something you really don't want to miss. And if you can bring a "nice" camera, your smartphone won't capture some of the impressive details you will miss. This was by far the best experience ever! We found this experience through hotel website, and booking was very easy and quick to do! After booking, however, it was a little hard for me to find the email booking, but good thing I'd created a calendar invite with the information I needed! Transportation is not provided, get an uber. Chris was our pilot and he was so funny and entertaining for sure! He provided us with great info on island, history and a lot of funny jokes to keep us entertained! Good thing is you can bring your phone to record and take pictures, but they also provide full video and pictures for you to purchase!
