Davies Law Firm - Davies Law Firm

Davies Law Firm

Great experience! Fred Davies established a trust for my dad in 2011 and he passed away in 2020…read more Even after so many years the firm was there to help when I needed them the most. As trustee, I worked with Bill Davies in managing my father's affairs and he did an outstanding job. The estate was handled quickly and competently and I felt very comfortable through the entire process.

I called 6 firms in Syracuse, 3 were extremely expensive, 2 wanted money up front for a consultation later credited if you used their firm, this firm was left. Free consultations by phone only; should have been a big clue to stop. Told a few times I wouldn't find a cheaper law firm in the area and a lot of promises made; another missed clue. They sent a booklet explaining all about trusts and it's impressive. Once my family decided, I made an appointment. An out of state family member was funding this. They do not accept credit cards over the phone without extracting an unacceptable fee, nor cashier's checks/money orders. Will take a check. Young people don't use checks so arrangements had to be made to transfer money to me so I could write the check on appointment day. It was a hassle. Appointment was unprofessional for a 'top firm'. You walk off the elevator and there is no reception desk. I had to go down two separate hallways before finally knocking on a door asking for help. I was put in a conference room with an open laptop, a folder then put on a zoom call with Fred Davies who was in the next room because he is a germaphobe. I can understand a person's fear after Covid but a mask in a room with me wearing one is sufficient protection. He only does phone consults; says his office has no time. Real reason, germaphobe and sales pressure. Why I like face/face first before an appt to assess character. When it was time to sign the contract/hand over retainer, he entered the room without reservation dressed in a Hawaiian shirt and shorts. I should have walked out right then and there. Don't let the website pictures fool you. There is no professional decorum in this office. Everyone should expect a lot more from a law firm! The folder discussed explained the necessary documents needed, instructions and forms to be filled out. It is a lot of work to get everything needed, copied for them and for your files. I 3-hold punched everything and secured it back in the folder with their material. The entire folder has to be sent back at your expense. It was clearly explained that once received it takes 2 - 3 months for them to get back to you. After 2 1/2 months, I received a summary of all the information I sent for my authorization after which you return (at your expense) for them to produce the final trust. Their work was missing vital information and incorrect. Telephoning the legal asst who did the work, she informed me that all the documents were not in my file, that I didn't do as I was told per instructions (one area wrong) no less than 5 times and continually talked over me. After knowing and saying she didn't have all the documentation needed, she continued to put together unacceptable shotty work and sent it to me. After writing the firm on that date and later in a cover letter with a duplicate copy of everything I sent the first time (reason you copy for yourself), they took offense to me calling them out on their substandard work and unprofessionalism. I was called two weeks later and told by Fred that he is giving me the curiosity by personally calling me to inform me that I am not the type of client he wants for his firm and would be returning my retainer. This was said three times. When I questioned why, he said and I quote: "It is just a feeling I have". In reality, he is a coward and vindictive because his firm just got called out on the lack of work ethics/unprofessionalism. Problems continued trying to get my and my family's personal/financial information returned & being assured all information in any form of paper, electronic, scanned and digitized version is shredded and deleted from their system. If this is their work ethic now, imagine the problems when you need to make a change or your trustees have to start working with them. Go elsewhere! Don't fall into this trap!

We just encountered the worst experience with this attorney, Christopher R. Smith, Esq. on our…read morefirst home purchase. He was referred to us by our realtor and our mistake is that we never researched him before proceeding to seek his legal services. We asked him his legal fees for a new home purchase and he categorically charged us his flat fee for his services. Later on we detected that he had indicated an entirely different amount in our closing disclosures without discussing anything with us. Also, although we had clearly communicated and told him that we were not interested in homeowners title insurance, he went ahead to get it for us again without consulting us. On researching him, we found out that he sells title insurance, and is an examining counsel for the same title insurance company from which he purchased ours without consent despite saying "No, thank you!" When we drew his attention to these, he quickly got belligerent towards us. Although we had sought his legal services, he never contacted us to familiarize us with the process or give us directions on what to expect through the process. Rather, we had to do our own research on what to expect every step of the way. The issue that broke the camel's back for us: at our final walkthrough the house, a problem was detected that we requested fixed before we close on the house. This is a basic right of every home buyer. Although it is common practice for sellers to offer credit for detected problems on a house, it doesn't erase the buyer's right to request a fix instead. As our legal representative, we expected Chris to be on our side and work in our favor as all professional attorneys do. Instead, he began mounting pressure on us to close on the house despite the detected problem. This is violation of a buyer's right. If the buyer prefers the problem fixed instead of receiving credit, this right should be respected without any intimidation whatsoever. He wanted us to accept credit for this problem and close quickly (because we had exposed him on the earlier issues and he wanted to get done with us) and we preferred getting the problem fixed instead before proceeding to close. I could not believe the intimidation and threats this attorney hailed on us in attempts to frighten us and to compel us to rush to close. He is the most unprofessional, uncaring, and unethical attorney I have ever seen. He has no interest in, and certainly has no respect for the rights of his clients. We are considering launching a complaint with the bar on our experience with him. He completely mistreated us and had zilch interest in defending our basic rights as his clients.
