As most decent Asian places do they cater for vegetarians and also some vegan options. The staff who work here are super friendly and love seeing familiar faces keep rolling back in. Remember though it's BYO wine only which is disappointing as they don't sell any beer.

Having grown up in South East Asia, this place makes me happy. I only found out this place existed because a menu was dropped in my mailbox, and I am glad it was. This is not a new restaurant/take away, but the current owners have only been here about six months (they waited that long before doing the letter box drop, so they said). The menue is predominantly Malaysian, but there are some other classic dishes from various Asian locales, such as udon and pad Thai. My recent visit was for take away, but they do have melamine tables and a BYO policy for those who choose to dine in. That will be the strategy for my next visit. I ordered a Singapore noodles, and my flatmate got a char ho fun and dumplings. A nice little bonus was being offered not just house-made sambal with fresh chopped chillies, but also some pickled chillies as well when we picked up the meal. I hate getting take away and being told they don't offer fresh chilli, so this was an instant win. The food was fantastic, and very authentic. The staff are lovely and willing to chat. The venue has parking and is only about 20 minutes from my house on foot. All in all, great find for the inner north west. As Merrill J Fernando says, "Do try it".

If you're expecting authentic Chinese then maybe you need to look closer to the city because this seems to be more what what one would consider Asian Fusion - they have a mix of offerings, traditional Chinese and Malaysian. Still, it's a pretty decent restaurant and the staff are really friendly. The prices aren't all that bad either. They have a sit in area (which is pretty nice) as well as offering take-away. Okay, I wouldn't suggest you come all the way up to Epping to check it out, but if you are in the area it's a pretty decent place for a feed.

The chow garden has been an icon in epping since i was knee high to a grasshopper…read more It hasn't changed much over the last 34 years. Infact, i don't think its even had a new paint job but the fact they've been here since before i was born, in the same street, in the same building with the same owners is testament to it's chefs. The food is absolutely delicious and the prices are just as good. $30 for an 8 course banquet that will fill you up way before dessert arrives. Book a reservation or simply walk in but beware...on the weekends it gets quite busy. It seats anywhere from 1 person to around 80 comfortably and the decor is everything you'd expect from a late 70s early 80s restaurant that never upgraded its decor! However, the food is second to none and with eat in or takeaway available I highly recommend the chow garden as the quenching for your chinese thirst. It's as fresh as youd expect from any side street, out of the way and un advertised chinese affair but, it's extremely moorish and the staff are festidious when it comes to pleasing you. It is, however, 100% BYO so don't forget your beer or wine as the bottle shop is an annoying walk across the busy High street in epping. Which is to be avoided at the best of times. Great staff. Beautiful authentic chinese food in a hidden corner of Melbourne. Delivering the goods since time immemorial.

Very disappointed, never returning…read more We loved this restaurant once, and now that it has changed hands, it is clear that the quality had gone downhill dramatically just to be cheap. We offered the same dishes as always and were shocked at the changes. We called to ask if we had been given the wrong order by mistake, but apparently the new owners think it okay to replace a traditional recipe with a cheap, gross version and hike up the prices at the same time. I ordered Char Kaoy Tao and what I got was some rice noodles, spongy beef, carrots and onion. WHAT!? You can google image search a thousand pictures of this dish and not once will you see CARROT!! It's chicken, pork, Chinese sausage, egg, prawns, mung bean shoots and garlic chives - none of which were in my meal. I looked at the new menu and was alarmed to see "beef and shrimp" as the description. Not only is that completely wrong but there was NOT ONE SHRIMP in it either. And it tasted bad, I couldn't even eat one bite of the tough, yet spongy beef. The special fried rice was a disgrace too. It was pure white, like not fried at all and maybe 2% of it was other ingredients, a few sad looking bits and pieces. It was CHEAP QUALITY and a TOTAL RIP OFF. Now checking the old menu against the new one, the prices have increased too, so less quality for higher prices. We requested a refund, as it's false advertising to call Beef and (zero) shrimp after an actually delicious traditional Malaysia dish. We spoke to the manager but they didn't want to help so basically, we didn't get a refund and WE WILL NEVER EAT HERE AGAIN. Shame on you for ruining a good restaurant just to BE CHEAP.

Our party of six still had a great night. We enjoyed a good range of dishes, both starters and mains. We had shared spring rolls as an entree. These were very tasty. All the mains were terrific too and a number of these were well know standards. These comprised of gado gado, nasi goreng with chicken, beef rendang, yellow rice and finally sayur lodeh, vegetable curry. This was very tasty fresh food and happily we couldn't fault it. It was a very good meal and service was good too. Sadly there were no ice or ice buckets for wine which was disappointing on a hot night. But still a most enjoyable night.

There is a sign at the front but at night it's hardly noticeable and on a windy day, you might see the signage on the ground rather than upright. It's a shame, because once you walk in to the side gate, the venue is quite amazing. Gorgeous courtyard that's friendly and secure ( for kids to run around) and lots of outdoor seating for the warmer months. I can see many diners spending a relaxing evening here with delicious food and some beer or ice cendol. Inside the restaurant, it feels like a reused old pub, with church like structure and walls. Lots of gigs posters around which sends the message that it's client group are maybe the hip young professionals. Certainly when I was here there was no other Indonesian diners. Food wise, it's not the usual 'street food' you would find walking down the streets of Jakarta, so whilst the menu is familiar, it's certainly not a typical day to day meal. Looking at their Instagram account, I see Yuni visiting Bali and talking about lots of Balinese food, so maybe the flavours are more traditional Balinese ( but not the ones you find at popular tourist haunts). It's definitely a home cooked traditional meal. Although I was salivating scrolling through the their pics and menu, I have to admit that the flavours I got was not the ones I was craving. Not that the food was not good, it was delicious but like I mentioned, had flavours that maybe are specific to a region that I'm not used to. The tempeh for example was battered and deep fried, where you would usually find them crispy fried on its own or marinated and fried in its saucy goodness. The meals also came out more expensive than other places, especially if you were used to the student budget Indonesian haunts. The Nasi Ayam campur ( mix plate of rice, chicken and sides) were $22. Other mains were $13-$20 without rice. So it does start to add up. Overall, it's worth trying for yourself if you enjoy Indonesian food and see what you think
