The manga selection is fantastic. Of course there are always going to be a few series or volumes missing, but that's just the reality of limited shelf space. Even so, they still carry far more manga than just about any bookstore I've been to, so it's hard to complain. The stationery section is absolutely adorable. If you love Japanese pens, notebooks, stickers, washi tape, or cute desk accessories, you'll probably leave with more than you planned. I also really appreciated their selection of Japanese books translated into English. It wasn't just manga. There were novels, art books, language books, and other titles that are difficult to find elsewhere. I wish I had more space in my luggage! This store is a real gem in Little Tokyo and an easy stop whether you're a longtime anime and manga fan or just curious about Japanese books and stationery. Sorry for no pictures. Came on the Sunday after July 4 and it was very busy, which wasn't a surprise, given that Anime Expo was finishing up down the street. Kinokuniya is loaded with manga, Japanese books, Japanese stationery, and random fun items. It's a fun store to find something; however, the costs are quite high. The cost is probably the reason that I don't buy things regularly from here; however, it is a favorite place to visit in Little Tokyo because they have so many fun things, their manga collection is quite extensive, and the pen selections are really nice.

On my recent visit, I picked out several items and was ready to check out when I asked if I could purchase the paper vase and flower that were on display. It seemed like a simple request--especially since I was already buying multiple things and was clearly a paying customer. Instead of trying to help, the staff asked three different managers, and every single one just said "no." No explanation, no attempt to offer an alternative, and no effort to make the sale. It felt less like customer service and more like rigid rule-following for the sake of saying no. What makes it even more frustrating is that everything in the store is already very expensive. When customers are willing to spend that kind of money, you would expect at least a little flexibility or effort to accommodate a reasonable request. Retail should be about helping customers and making sales, not turning away people who are literally trying to buy your products. Walking out after that interaction was frustrating and disappointing. After that experience, I won't be coming back. Blocked.

She kindly and patiently explained to me the differences between length, width, color and materials when it comes to penmanship. I had the pleasure of also utilizing their gift wrapping services, which is also something I highly recommend. They have some wonderful choices in the store, but you can also bring your own, which I definitely did. I love how all the prices are clearly labeled for every item even the smallest of attachments. This let someone immediately know the value of an item and what is required to obtain the goals for a project that someone is pursuing.

The shop also has some decent Japanese-brand notebooks, toolboxes, pens, etc. Customers can also make their own through the website by uploading their own images (minimum order of 50 stickers). Apparently they have a long standing history in LA, having opened in 1946 after World War II. The shop occupies the site of the first Japanese-owned business in Los Angeles, circa 1890's. Pretty cool! I have a soft spot for everything animal shaped and soo.... I picked up a fun/odd felt tiger Christmas ornament, a cat pen, and a super cute bronze cat shaped spoon that hangs on the side of your cup. Did I need it? No.... but it's fun and makes me happy. Haha! Overall, great shop to browse around and find some unique gift items. They even wrap up your purchases in paper bags like they do in Japan. I LOVE IT!
