The store is extremely geared towards invitations, whether they be for weddings or otherwise. I expected a larger selection of paper based on the reviews others had posted. About 30 different kinds of paper in various forms, including envelopes, card stocks and lighter weight papers from index card size to 8.5 x 11. Paper outlets can be larger and have more supply. The staff was very helpful in answering my questions, however. I asked mostly about inkjet vs laser and other printing options. Make sure you know what you're going to be printing with before you go to the store. Not a super impressive store, but definitely helpful staff. I felt like the paper was a little pricy. My wife and I dropped some serious coin at Paper Source over the course of our engagement, purchasing paper and supplies for making our own save-the-date cards and wedding invitations. We were thrilled with Paper Source's broad selection, generally good prices and high-quality materials. We were less than thrilled with their hit-or-miss inventory policy, where certain items weren't available in the quantities or colors that we needed. Most out-of-stock items can be requisitioned from the chain's Chicago central warehouse in a matter of days, but if you're working to a deadline, this can be a little frustrating. Delivery issues aside, this is a great place to go for raw materials for your next paper-related craft project. If it's invitations you need, spend some time perusing their extensive sample bins -- each sample comes with instructions on how to make your own. read more

I am not a scrap-booker; in fact, my reasons for visiting Paper Source came down to making my own wedding invitations. Not only did I leave the store with all of the supplies necessary, but I have visited the many store branches (Brookeline, Arlington) repeatedly for more inspiration. The staff at the Arlington branch are especially helpful, and they have an on-site designer who will even sit down and help you with your original designs....without laughing at you. Paper Source is great if you're in need of, well...paper. I don't mean to state the obvious, but the truth is that they have some of the best paper (for wrapping, card/bookmaking, etc.) around. Their papers come in all sorts of styles and colors, and you can find pretty much whatever type of decorative paper you're looking for. They also have a great selection of stamps (though a little to expensive for me to invest in) that's worth looking at. They have other arts and crafts supplies, stationary, and little gifts (such as boxes, books, pens, etc.) as well. I do feel, however, that most of the craft supplies can be found elsewhere for a cheaper price (though, of course, a slightly lower quality). However their paper, in my opinion, is the best you will find. It will make whatever your craft project may be that much more special. read more

If you are a creative person avoid this store. Despite their name and catch-phrase they don't really deal in paper, and they don't want you to do anything that's actually creative. They just want you to buy crap. Preferably their crap. Once upon a time Paper-Source was THE destination for the bookbinder, paper-artist, and print-junkie. In the 8 years that I've been going there they have slumped into another boutique carrying a bunch of useless, overpriced trinkets. Don't believe me? Visit the store, and while you're their pick me up a $30 set of drinking glasses with bugs printed on them. Even their house brand 'creative' kits are dumbed down so much a 4 year old would scoff at them. Don't believe me? Pick up a $10 paper dove 'kit' - it consists of 4 paper doves punched out of paper that you tie a string to. That is. Way creative, right? You could once go to Paper Source and get paper from around the world - Italy, Nepal, France, Vermont, Japan, Canada, England, China, Thailand. You could get bookmaking tools from Germany, and silk book cloths from Vietnam. It was actually a place you COULD do something creative. Now it's all $24 dollar candles, candy pooping moose toys, tin lanterns, rubber rats, supremely unfunny greeting cards, generic scrapbooking supplies you can get anywhere, and Paper Source brand printed products. The only thing *remotely* redeemable is their house-brand cardstock/envelope selection. If you want to actually do something creative every day go to Utrecht, Pearl Paint, or Artist & Craftsman Supplies. All will have a better selection - especially when it comes to PAPER supplies. If you want to blow a lot of money on things you don't really need, want, or care about go to Paper Source. read more

I adore the Paper Source and and have been a frequent at the one in Bellevue, Washington. There is something so magical and quaint about this particular store. Sure, it is much smaller than the one in WA, yet precisely because of its location, I feel like a lot of its commercialism is washed away. You no longer have rich people ordering wedding invitations from catalogs, rather, you have family, children, and simply people with a love for exquisitely made paper. Despite its small size, there doesn't seem to be anything missing. There is a dazzling selection of Japanese, Thai, and Indian paper, cards, gift wraps, stamps, and gifts. Place is super organized, and I love the interior design. Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Oh, and during one visit I left my water bottle there. They kept it for me. Papersource is kind of evil for tempting me to buy all sorts of pretty things I will likely never use. It has such gorgeous papers, ribbons, and various little things that call out, "impulse buy me now! Convince yourself you will invent some project to use me in, even though we both know I will sit on your desk or bookshelf, being cute and useless forever!" However, I'm also often inspired to buy pretty things I could use for my handmade books, and that's why I like the place, for its inspiration value, even if it gets me in trouble sometimes. What I'm not crazy about are their prices--for some things they seem ok, but for many of the bookmaking basics, they are pretty high. Not to mention that their stock can be both impressive and limited at once--they always have a some gorgeous products to design around, but if I'm looking for something for a project already in the making, I often can't find it. Between Papersource, Pearl and Artist and Craftsman Supply, none of which tend to be sure bets, my needs get covered usually though, so it works out. Papersource is particularly good for its beautiful line of japanese papers and its greater stock of bookbinding tapes. I've always relied on this place for cute (if overpriced) cards, stamps, and stocking stuffers. That said, a few of the things I've purchased recently didn't work out, including wrapping paper that only managed to wrap 3 boxes and magnets that weren't very...magnetic. Lately, they've also started to stock some, er, questionable items. Such as a birthday card featuring shotgun-wielding nuns waiting to shoot Islamic terrorists in the afterlife. Seriously? Aside from the undertones (or overtones) promoting religious warfare, who wants a card that basically says "happy birthday, never forget that there are hateful, violent people in this world!" This is regarding the customer service at this location. I called ahead of time to see if they had a specific date book in a specific color so I wouldn't have to drive over for no reason in a zipcar. The woman over the phone said they didn't have the one in the larger size but they had a smaller version in that color. I asked her to set it aside for me and I would be over in 15 minutes to purchase it. Arrived 15 miutes later, asked about the book I reserved.. it was not reserved. What the hell.. The woman showed me the "smaller option" but it was a completely different book style and the size of my palm. I bought the "curry" colored book (not pretty) for $18.04. Turns out the color I was looking for is online and costs $14.98 and with shipping it's only 22.95. Couldn't they have said it's available online and only for 4 dollars more with shipping?! I'm frustrated that they were so short with me and very entitled. I wish I had just gone online and not dealt with the very unhelpful staff there. Yes, it's only 20 bucks but I'm pretty sure I'm going to throw this curry thing away and buy the other one online. I love the products at Paper Source and I've never had a problem before.. The Boylston Street employees seem a lot more friendly and helpful.. I sure won't be going to this location again. read more

Look, Everyone... EVERYONE is entitled to a bad day. I'm having one right now, but come on. I know it sucks to work in retail. trust me I have worked in retail for a long time. I hated many jobs. BUT, but I never showed it as much as one of the younger guys helping me a few days ago. He couldn't answer any of my questions such as where is the wrapping paper. As an aspiring stationery designer, I go to Paper Source often for research and to pick up occasional supplies. The store is beatifully deisigned and the sheer quantity of quality offerings is so inspiring for a paper lover like me. Their envelopes are a favorite of many small time stationery deisgners because of the satisfying weight of the paper and the range of colors (just look for that telltale deep flap on the envelope of the next handmade card you buy). As far as supplies, many of the items here can be found cheaper online (including through PS's wholesale line for businesses) but nothing beats spending an afternoon roaming the aisles, surrounded by such a well curated and lovingly presented selection. I admire that even though Paper Source is a chain, they still maintain a boutique-y feel and attentive service, unlike that horrifying Papyrus on Summer Street *shiver. read more

Able to move with the speed of a hummingbird between customers answering questions as he retrieve products for other customers. Highly animated and focused. The papersource in cambridge is awesome! Their customer service is outstanding- always willing to help if you have questions about completing a project or just don't know which direction to take. The management (I think they're the management) are always willing to listen and make exceptions (within reason) if you have concerns about a return-- I'm always purchasing too much for a project and they are always good about returning merchandise. Though they are not an 'art store' they do have a lot of components that could be used to create a lot of different things-- lots of wonderful fine papers.. foolish gifts.. office supplies. Unfortunately I could spend hours in Paper Source. When I go in, I immediately want to spend a million dollars on home made paper, address books, colorful envelopes and sticker makers. It is beyond a guilty pleasure and simply the vacuum that sucks away my funds. It is, however, a great place to find paper to decorate a card, make a home made present or find a little something to stuff a stocking. Although, highly over priced, when you go to Paper Source, you will leave with something in your hands. I only wish that something wasn't just a large piece of beautiful paper. read more

The worst Paper Source of them all. In general, Paper Source is ok if all you do is buy something off the rack and then leave. If you need customer service, then good luck. But at Porter Square, more than once I've signed up and paid for a class and it was canceled at the last minute. This week, no one told me and when i showed up they acted like I was a jerk for being there. When I expected the person behind the cash register to refund my money she made a half hearted attempt to call someone and had a conversation with the person on the phone that was totally disrespectful to me, the customer standing right there, while she justified herself over the phone to whomever was in corporate. Then she hung up and told me I had to resolve it myself with Paper Source. Wouldn't you know I called the number she gave me and got NO ONE on the phone??!!! Then today, I opened up the Wildflower Wreath I had bought earlier and it didn't even have some of the sizes of petals it promised on the back. Oh, I guess "Contents May Vary" means you can't even make the flower they promise on the cover with ANY color? I can understand if they might give you different colors of petals than the ones promised but NONE in that size??? When I just spent $25??? It makes me suspicious that employees in the stores are cannibalizing the packages. I usually stay away from this location but when I come, I'm so sorry I did. I walk in all positive about making pretty things and then it ruins my whole day. read more

I threw a private party this past weekend at Paper Source for 8 girls. The class we chose was just an intro class. Betsy was our instructor. The workroom is downstairs where the entire room is surrounded by scrap paper and supplies that were available for our use. When we arrived, we found little paper containers around the table with our names and hershey kisses inside. Nice touch! Each person had their own bone folder, pencil, scrap paper, pile of different colored cardstock, and 10% off coupon for purchases. Then there were various stamps, stamp pads, ribbon, and other supplies to share on the center of the table. Betsy showed us elementary stamping, masking, and embossing techniques. Some of us were a little more advanced and she was gracious enough to show us some other things like setting eyelets and using a mini Xyron. We were missing some supplies and she ran around the store getting us what we needed. We listened to some CD's while making our own projects. The two hours flew by and everyone had a great time. Once or twice I have found the staff to be a little nosy (okay, I know you can make a full outfit out of paper, but can I just look around?), but in general they are extremely helpful. I chose Paper Source to do my wedding invitations after being a customer for years. I was so very disappointed with their service. Namely, the order came in with no return envelopes. They hadn't even checked the order first before handing it over to my mother, and we discovered it after the calligrapher started addressing. They also included no address guide, which in my experience (as someone who has done calligraphy for many weddings) is always included with the invitations. Having the wrong order was bad enough as we needed to get the invitations out that same week. Add to that, we waited five days for the new shipment to come in. No rushed service, no courier (which I asked about.) The store blames Crane, Crane blames the store and was shocked that nobody checked the order when it came in. All I know is there was not a sense of urgency to fix their mistake, and there was no explanation as to what happened to the missing envelopes. I don't even recall hearing a sincere apology. I was looking forward to using Paper Source all of my table cards, place cards, and even some tokens and wrapping paper for my gifts to the wedding party. Sadly I don't think I should give them my business after such a negative experience. Perhaps Boylston Street needs the boost after last week's events. I would stick to a small, local boutique for invitations with a more personal, and careful approach. At the end of the day, Paper Source felt like a chain and made very amateur mistakes. For an event as important as a wedding, I did not feel that the store cared much about the most basic details. read more

The products in the store were great. I bought something that I was very happy with. I wish I could say the same about the service and the general attitude of the salesperson. Not a smile on one of their faces. I stood at the counter for almost five minutes before anyone came. When she finally came she said nothing, no greeting, nothing, not a thank you after she rang up my purchase. nothing. she did not look at me. i thought maybe her lips were sown shut by the manager who eventually appeared as well. He also said nothing. No smile. Nothing. No greeting. No Merry Christmas. No have a nice day. No thank you's.
